I thought it would be nice to have a section where you could post if you know/find anything interesting or informative about NY at the turn of the century. Could help people be accurate or even inspire ideas. The main reason I didn't create a Staten Island borough, is because I'm not positive it was connected to Brooklyn by bridge until the 1960s, and otherwise seems pretty far from the rest of NY. Another reason I didn't include it is because it has only been known as Staten Island since 1975, it was known before this as the Borough of Richmond. Something I think is interesting is that all of these boroughs, except Manhattan, became part of New York in 1898. Queens and the Bronx I believe were counties, but Brooklyn was it's own city prior to 1898. ((I wonder how Spot took it ;D))

One of my favourite things, and something that is little known, is that there was a James DeLancey farm surrounding the Bowery street. I just love that after seeing Newsies. Also, there was a restaurant called "McGurk's" which, in 1899, was called "McGurk's Suicide Hall." Trust me, the name was true to the building. I did a lot of research on the Bowery for one of my fictions, and was absolutely amazed at the results!
And wow....that site IS amazing!

I have an interesting fact that I found, I cant remember where, about the lodging houses. Some of you may already know this, maybe even been the ones who wrote it....But here it is:
There were originally 5 houses. Manhattan - Duane Street - lodging house for boys Other - lodging house for boys Other - lodging house for boys Other - lodging house for boys Manhattan - 67th street - lodging house for girls
The "Other's" are the lesser known lodging houses that had barely any history. One of them is known to be in Brooklyn though.

I found out which street the Brooklyn Lodging House was on...oh what was it??? Oh yeah, okay it was on Poplar street! This site has info on the Brooklyn LH and The Duane Street Manhattan Lodging house: nineduane.queenitsy.com/bindex.htmland also this doesn't really have to do with the Geography, but the first person to jump off the Brooklyn Bridge was Robert E. Odlum on May 19, 1885. He was a swimming teacher. He survived the jump, but died a week later from internal injuries. And it amazed me how filthy rich people like Pulitzer and HEarst were. Also, did you know that Hearst bought the Journal from Pulitzer's brother Alfred? It started a war between the papers. Also Hearst was an avid art collector. Hearst's mansion in bevery hills had 29 bedrooms, three swimming pools, tennis courts, its own cinema and a nightclub! ;D

Inflation calculator www.westegg.com/inflation/For example... Something that *costs* $9.99 in 2009 would *cost* $0.39 in 1899. On the other hand, something that was worth or cost $9.99 in 1899 would be $255.23 in 2009.
