Mary was halted in the middle of her ritualistic hair hiding and it was as thought she had been electrocuted. She was just confused... no one had simply taken her hat out of her hands before. Off her head, sure, but people didn't just grab it out of her hands when she was doing something with it! So she just looked at Naomi with a confused look on her face. It was very close to a look of anger and disbelief, but there was no anger, she was really just really confused. And then when the questions began raining down on all sides she understood. Pretty? Mary had been called pretty by one other person, and well... she had believed him but all the same, she had never imagined being told that by another woman, that made it almost a compliment. Plus, Naomi and Sarah had nothing to gain by telling her she was pretty or anything, meaning it was probably true, meaning Prince didn't now what to do anymore.
When Mona entered the room Mary turned in the chair that she'd been nudged into sitting on and looked at her. At their introduction she gave what resembled a smile and a nod of her head, trying very hard to be congenial and nice, to the new people in her little isolated world. But really... all she wanted was her hat back! It was like a safety blanket and she felt naked without it.
But, the ball was in her court, and it was time to answer these questions. She used a stock answer, one that she gave to many people. "Most newsies are boys, and life on those streets is safer for a boy," she said as she shrugged telling this story. True... she was surrounded by a bunch of actresses, but... well she might tell the real story some day, but in the mean time, she didn't anticipate it being a problem... not like it was any of their business anyway, really. "I didn't really wanna cut my hair," she was attached to it really, "so I just stuffed it all up in my hat. No one questions a boy selling news papers on the street, and I still think that it helps me sell faster," and that was the truth, that was all for sure. Prince was still nervous sitting backstage and she was holding on to the chair she was sitting in pretty far, as though she was on a rocking ship. Her legs were bouncing skittishly and she was looking at all the faces in the room in turn, just trying to read their facial expressions. "What, nothin' wrong with puttin' on a show to make a livin' right?" she said trying to put it into words that they could maybe relate to. "...can I have my hat back please?"
