River took his time walking to Stu's. He'd left early so he didn't have to rush to meet with Dodger. It'd been a little while since he'd seen his son and he was finally beginning to realize how much work being a leader of a borough actually was. A small scowl crossed his face at the latest argument he'd had to end in the lodging house. River found he especially disliked that part of being a leader. Before he'd been able to place bets on the outcome, now he had to be a peacemaker. He pushed the door to Stu's open and glanced around the small restaurant for Dodger.
He nodded his head when he saw Dodger and walked over, taking a seat across from Dodger. "Thanks," River replied to the offered sandwich. He took a bit from it before saying anything more, but another scowl crossed his face. "Just started realizing what a bore being leader is. Gotta actually stop fights between the boys and help them resolve things." He took another bite out of his sandwich, chewing viciously on the food. "Thank god I don't gotta deal with the girlie problems."

"Well since Emma just started bein' a girl." he raised his sandwich as he took another bit, smirking though as he leaned back and considered. Dodger had in a way-- established a leadership in the Bronx from outside sources. Only Lefty had been from the Bronx proper. Mag had gone to Queens and Dodger himself was from Manhattan. But he couldn't hide the look on his face, he was so amused.
"Well mate, I did try to tell ya but you didn't listen. Had more headaches from sortin out problems then I did from not sleepin' nights. But that's alright, you get used to it. And you can take bets some days, let em sort it out among themselves. Just break it up when bones are gonna get broken. Sometimes lads learn best when they have bruises to remind them." That was how he'd always done it, but Dodger had-- really had to change. He'd had to stop being so fly by night and devil may care, not even conning as much as he used to for fun. "The gels are easiest-- they take care a themselves. Normally just had Emma ta deal with."

A groan slipped past River's lips when Dodger mentioned Emma. That was one topic he would rather not talk about. Although he'd had a good time ribbing Reid when Reid had finally realized that Emma's body was changing and she was sleeping in his bed. Even that was starting to get a bit old though and Reid was shrugging off most of their comments instead of blushing and stammering. The blushing and stammering had been entertaining so it was unfortunate that Reid got over it so quickly. He'd spoken to Lexi after she'd talked to Emma and he was grateful she'd been the one to do it. He didn't know how he would have explained all that stuff to Emma. She was a little too innocent for her own good, but he knew he didn't have anyone to blame but himself and Dodger and the rest of the boys.
"No need to tell me," River replied as he absently rubbed his arm. He'd broken up a fight the other day a bit too soon and one of the boys hadn't taken noticed and had punched River in the arm. It only left a slight bruise and River had more then retaliated. The other kid sported a black eye from River and few other bruises from the other boy he'd been fighting. It wasn't something River wanted to make a habit of, but it was useful. Now the boys knew to take care and pay attention when they chose to fight in the lodging house. "Lexi took care of Emma," River replied, saying a silent thank god.

Dodger had to laugh when River groaned, taking another bite of the sandwich. Emma was as close to a little sister as Dodger had, truth be told it was kind of like she'd replaced his own. So they really did have no one to blame when it came to how innocent she was or how she acted, it was their own fault. But Dodger replied, "Better you than me, mate. Though I can imagine what Reid was thinkin'. Wonder what happens when our lil' gel starts seein' boys as more than just lads to be dragged about." He couldn't wait to see how much trouble that one caused, especially because he had a hunch that there was maybe two boys she'd regard that way at all. And it would cause an uproar. He could only grin.
"Best way to handle it, mate. Lexi can relate. We can't. Though I'd have paid money to see Reid realize that Emma wasn't so little anymore. A few months we're going to be beatin blokes away from her. Well, you are. I've got a real job." Though he was teasing he knew that it would probably Lexi that would be dealing with Emma discovering that there was more to boy girl relationships than just what she had with them. And why Reid reacted how he did with specifics, growing up was tough but entertaining. "Other than that? Nothing else? Wager a leader meetin'll be called soon. Spot and Jack won't let it sit that the leadership has changed. Have to find where you all stand.. and you need to keep a cool head, mate. Don't let Conlon goad ya."
