"You know, it isn't wise to mess with someone from Brooklyn."
She looked at him as she handed it to him, she wasn't going to mess with him beyond that she hadn't had any intentions to do so anyway. She tilted her head as she took another drag on her cigarette and looked up at the sky,"I wasn't bein' serious, and I ain't that dumb,"she said as she looked back at him, she really never understood why everyone seemed to be so defensive. She knew that it was a rough place to be and times were hard but people really didn't have to take everything so seriously and lash out on each other. She looked down at her feet as she inhaled another drag and sighed,"Sorry," she added, she didn't know why she was apologizing but that's just the type of person she was she felt that whenever she made someone upset it was her obligation to apologize. She looked back up at him and wondered what he was thinking, what he would possibly say.

Jason snatched the cigarette and lit it, he was very happy that he was reunited with smokes. A smirk crossed over his face, a victory smoke. He just got a stranger to hand over a cigarette. If the shoe was on the other foot, he wouldn't dare give her a smoke. You just don't do that. You don't waste cigarettes by giving them to other people, and you don't waste alcohol.
"I wasn't bein' serious, and I ain't that dumb,"
He chuckled to himself. "Oh really?" He asked, sarcastically. Jason collected himself and said, "Uh..thanks." He said, "For this." He held the cigarette up with his hand and gave a short nod to show his appreciation.
"Sorry,"
Jason shrugged, "Ah, it ain't a big deal. You didn't offend me or nothin'." He trailed off, and looked the girl over. "You got a name, girlie?" Jason asked.

She looked at him and tilted her head when he looked her up and down, she wondered what could really go through his mind he wasn't exactly your typical newsie it looked like but then again nobody was these days. She smiled and it lit up the features on her face when he asked her name. "Poet, and you are?"she asked her voice sweet and inviting at this point there was no point in sounding bitter, he seemed decent for now. She finished her cigarette and dropped it before stepping on it with the toe of her shoe before reaching in her pocket for another one. She brought it to her lips and lit it and took a drag, she hid her problems behind more than just her smile these days, she hid them behind alcohol and cigarettes, lots of cigarettes. She looked up at the sky briefly before bringing her gaze back to him awaiting a response.

"Poet, and you are?"
Jason laughed at how her mood changed so quickly. This girl was a true woman. One minute she seemed angry, bitter, the next she was smiling and seemed inviting. He grinned, "Jason Miller." He said.
There was a moment of silence between them. Jason glanced at her, she was wise enough to shut up when he told her it would be stupid to mess with someone from Brooklyn. Brooklyn in itself could be a scary place, but then you mess with their newsies, and it got ten times scarier. Only a few people understood that. He brought the cigarette back up to his mouth, inhaled, and exhaled smoke. "You a newsie?" He asked.

She looked around for a moment as he spoke to her then returned her gaze at his question. She laughed softly not at him just at the thought of being anything but a newsie. She nodded,"That I am, one of Jack's"she said a slight grin of pride on her face but it faded quick back to just a smile, she had pride for being a newsie but what was it worth if nobody really seemed to notice you in your own burrough. She took a long drag and blew her smoke down as she thought for a moment, a drink sounded really good at this point but she really liked having company for once so she decided to stay and settle for the company over the booze for now. She took off her cap and shoved it in her back pocket as her hair fell in light waves across her right eye and she looked at him trying to think of something else to say. "yer obviously one a Spot's right?"she mummbled she figured it was a dumb question but at least it gave her something else to say.

"That I am, one of Jack's"
"Oh." Jason said, simply. He didn't know that many newsies from Manhattan. He mainly knew the people in his borough, and a few kids from the Bronx. Every now and then he'd run into a Manhattan newsie, but it was rare. For the most part he stayed in Brooklyn, that's where he was born, and he'll probably die there too.
"yer obviously one a Spot's right?"
He laughed, "Well, obviously." He said, flicking off some of the ashes from his cigarette. "Its that obvious, huh? I was trying to pass off as a Queens newsie." Jason snorted. "Well, you caught me." He said, waving his hands around.

She laughed softly at his being a total smart ass, it amused her it was funny. She pushed herself off the tree she was leaning on and looked around again, she had the habit of looking around for no apparent reason, just scoping out any changes in the area. She groaned slightly but it wasn't an angry or impatient groan it wasn't an ugly one either. She looked at him and bit her lip as she thought,"you drink?"she asked of course she knew most all newsies drank but occassionally you would find the little innoccent ones who didn't. She figured this wasn't that kind of case. She ran a hand through her hair before letting it fall back into place and she took another drag on her cigarette,"Cause I could definately go fer a drink if ya wanna join meh..."she muttered casually.

"you drink?"
Jason shook his head, solemnly. "No ma'am, I don't. Promised the good Lord I would stay sober." He then chucked, "I'm just kidding. Do I look like the kind who would be sober?" He laughed, "I drink more than I smoke. And I smoke more than a chimney does."
"Cause I could definately go fer a drink if ya wanna join meh..."
He looked around, and then shrugged. "Eh, why not? I love to drink, and I ain't got nothing better to do."

She smiled at him he really was entertaining and he made her smile. She looked at him and then down at her feet," so McGinty's then?"she asked as she put her hand in her pocket and played with the change hearing the coins clink against one another. She stepped passed him and whistled a soft mellody turning it into a hum, as she started to walk the way toward McGinty's looking over her shoulder at him,"ya comin'?"she asked sticking out her tongue playfully she was really happy and nothing could phase her today, yet at least.(should we switch to McGinty's after you reply?)

"so McGinty's then?"
"Of course." Jason said, "There ain't no better place than McGinty's." He said. It was one of his favorite places. It was a pub, it was in Brooklyn, and well...it was a pub. He loved it there.
"ya comin'?"
He looked over his shoulder at her, she was playfully sticking out her tongue at him. He looked back to the tree and sighed, "Leaving again, my friend. I shall return." He mumbled to the tree, as he turned around. "Yeah, I'm coming."
((Yes. We should.))
