(new day)
Calico stood with Soothsayer (his best friend and translator) while he folded his arms and waited for the man to give them their tickets for the races. They were Queens newsies but you weren't likely to find either of them in the lodging house.
They were free men, that's how Jamie (Soothsayer's actual name) would put it. But Thom didn't see it in the same light. They weren't free, they were poor and spending their last shilling on this? Sighing he ran his hand threw his hair as is friend came back to hand him his ticket.
"We're gonna score," was all Jamie could say, causing his friend to roll his eyes as he made his way to where he could see the races, and just about everything else there was to see. Grunting he lifted his head and watched. That was what Thom did. he watched, that was what made him a good card player.
Also that people tended to take him for granted. They thought he was weak and needed Jamie's strength to survive, they thought he was stupid. But in reality he was the one that kept both of them afloat. Otherwise they would be stuck in a spiral that neither could get out of.
It was an eternal balance between Soothsayer and Calico. "We should have bet on the other horse," he murmured as he looked down at his ticket. Cripes, they were going to lose the last of their eating money....

Smarty Jones was out for blood. Normally she wouldn't be caught dead at a racetrack. To her it was all just stupid men throwing their money away. And on top of that, she normally couldn't be found in Queens. But this time, it was necessary--hell, even personal. She shoved her way roughly through the crowd of men, ignoring stares and indignant cries, until she came to the window. She pushed aside two boys who looked about her age until she was face-to-face with the bookie, though it wasn't the one she was looking for. "Where the hell is Enzo?" she demanded.
"Why you want to know, lady?" The bookie said, looking amused.
"Cause I want to break his skinny neck! That crud gypped me! Spill it, where is he?"
The bookie saw the fire in Smarty's eyes, and was a little intimidated. "Watch it, lady, or I have you thrown out..."
"I don't even want to be here in the first place! Once I find Enzo and he pays me what he owes me..."

The two boys looked at one another and back at the girl. It was something about angry women that gave at least one of them pause. Calico folded his arms and looked back out over the track as Soothsayer moved over to her side and nodded."Hey get Enzo like the lady asks eh?"
Lady? That had Calico turning to watch his friend with that, are you stupid look. She was cute though, he rolled his eyes as his friend made eyes at the girl. To be honest Thom never thought of Brooklyn girls as girls, he'd hit one if he had too. They hit back and normally didn't even blink before they had a piece of wood to your skull. He knew what the Brooklyn kids were like.
Soothsayer didn't seem put off at all, he leaned his arm on the edge and just smirked at her. "What does Enzo owe ya?"
Thom thought he was going to get decked. The girl was Brooklyn, you could tell by the rage!

"Hey get Enzo like the lady asks eh?"
Smarty snapped her gaze to the boy who had spoken. Who was this kid? She sneered at him, "Do you have some kind of Knight in Shining Armor complex, you fink? I can take care of this myself, thanks..." She turned back to the bookie, stepping sideways to block the boy out of the conversation. "I need Enzo, all right? He gypped me, and I can't afford to be gypped!"
"I can see," the bookie said with a sly grin. "Poor girl. Can afford no skirt, even..."
In a fit of rage, Smarty grabbed the bars of the booth and rattled them menacingly. "If I did wear a skirt I could still kick your brains in, you fat lard!" she screamed, getting the attention of several people. The bookie looked frightened momentarily, and then remembered just what the bars were there for, and grinned like a fat cat.
"What does Enzo owe ya?"
Him again?! Smarty spun around and grabbed the kid by his shirtfront. "Didn't I tell you to stay out of this?" She shoved him away, not as hard as she would have otherwise. She was saving her worst for Enzo when she saw him.

Soothsayer was bright but he turned to his friend and jerked his finger in a, get a load of this motion. Sighing Calico just looked away as his friend leaned on the counter and grinned at the man on the other side while the girl raged.
"She's got a well formed.." he looked down at her back end. "Well you know, would be a pity in a skirt.." he backed away quickly, he just liked teasing the girls like her. the ones that raged and threatened. They were the most fun to tease the daylights out of.
Calico rolled his eyes and winced, his buddy was going to get it he might have to step in and help him out. With a sigh he looked down at his ticket and back at the races. What do you know? They're horse was in the lead...

"She's got a well formed.." he looked down at her back end. "Well you know, would be a pity in a skirt.."
Smarty's eyes widened at the lewd comment. No one, but no one, talked about her like that. Without a second thought, she swung around and punched the boy solidly in the face. She looked back at the bookie. "Where can I find Fiorenzo?" Her voice was controlled, and dangerously calm. She knew the guy would be calling someone to throw her out soon enough, but she wanted to finish what she came here to do, or at least try.

Calico was away from his position near the wall and moved to catch the girl's fist before it hit his friend in the face and let it drop. He'd known it was going to happen and Soothsayer was just grinning from ear to ear.
"See Calico.." Soothsayer started once again. "She's got a nice punch too.."
"Just shut up," was all he said for a moment before he grabbed his friend by his shirt and gave him a toss. Moving past Smarty and setting his ticket on the counter. "Get Enzo and my money.." he sounded calm but he had a low voice that sounded like gravel. He was irritated with the entire situation now. He just wanted his money and to let the girl throw her punches at someone else.
He looked down at her, dead calm and pissy. He looked away and grabbed his money when it was handed to him and grabbed Soothsayer.
Who instantly grabbed Smarty's ass and then ran like hell, laughing the entire time.
"Bloody idiot.." he was going to let her kill him now.

Smarty's fist was stopped in mid-air, causing her to start a little. She looked up to see a boy, one that she had barely noticed before. He lowered her fist, and she pulled away from him. She gave him a hard shove and demanded fiercely, "Who the hell do you think you are?"
"See Calico. She's got a nice punch too.."
"Just shut up." The boy called Calico shoved away his mouthy friend and addressed the bookie. "Get Enzo and my money.."
"Look, I don't need your help, all right?" Smarty said firmly.
"I would get Enzo, friend," the bookie acted as if Smarty hadn't spoken. "But he's not here for the moment. At home, he is."
Smarty's temper smoldered. "I'll come for him later..." she muttered. She was getting ready to get out of there, just as Calico was leaving with the Mouth. Out of the corner of her eye, Smarty could see the mouthy one--who grabbed her ass and ran.
Smarty gasped and screamed after him, "Oh, you dirty son of a--" She took off after him, mercilessly bowling down whomever stood in her path. He would pay for that if she had to chase him to New Jersey and back...

Calico smacked himself in the forehead as his friend just took off ducking threw the crowd dodging and weaving trying to avoid the very angry woman chasing after him.
Hey! She was showing off what she had, now he was trying to get away from her. He was going to get hit for sure if she caught him. But hey, he deserved it. He was laughing when he turned to see how close she was and swore. "Holy shit!" that girl could move. He didn't stop he turned up the juice but she was right behind him. He was in love already.

The boy started running faster, and Smarty momentarily considered whether or not he was worth the effort. Needless to say, he wasn't, but she wasn't about to let what he had done go down easy. Damned if she was going to let him get away with it. She matched his speed, and stuck to his path as strictly as she could, until she was close enough to him so that...
She burst forward and cut him off. She grabbed him by the shirt and brought him to a stop before throwing a hard punch at his face, and another in his gut. "Where's your friend now, you pervert?" she sneered, and gave him a final shove, intending to leave it at that. He wasn't worth the extra effort.

He was chuckling as he coughed, putting his hand to his eye, leaning back against a support that happened to be a pillar near him. "You're beautiful ya know that?" he was still chuckling as he coughed. Oh that was great.
Calico sighed and made his way over, giving Smarty a nod. "Sorry.." it was all he said before he crouched down near his friend who was probably going to get killed again for his remark.

"You're beautiful ya know that?"
Smarty fumed again and rasied her bare foot, and brought it down hard on the boy's crotch. She would like to say that it wasn't something she normally did, but then she would be lying. Smarty fought dirty, and hated to lose. She refused to give up until she won, and she wondered if this would do it. Unless she was very seriously mistaken, it would.
"Sorry.."
The Calico boy was here now. Smarty glared at him. "Do you ever get tired of butting into other people's lives?"

Soothsayer grabbed her foot and twisted it before she stomped down and basically threw her into his lap. Chuckling all the while as Calico shrugged, ignoring her remark. She could glare all she liked it didn't really change shit.
Jamie was laughing and knowing she was going to start swinging, as soon as she was in his lap he pinned her arms to her side. "Now that's not nice when someone is giving you a compliment.."

Then, something Smarty hadn't planned. The boy grabbed her foot and pulled at it. She cried out as she lost her footing and collasped, right into the boy's lap. Before she could right herself and take a swing at him, he had her arms pinned to her sides. Smarty thrashed violently, but he was strong. "You bastard! Let me go! Ugh!" She kicked her legs, trying to hit him, but couldn't.
"Now that's not nice when someone is giving you a compliment.."
"Let me go, you son of a whore!" She spat in his face and missed, never stopping her struggle. As soon as he let her go, she would punch him again and get the hell out of there.

"Nah," he replied evenly. "Me mum was a wonderful lady and you can take that to the back.." he was just smiling as she thrashed around. Calico rolled his eyes. "I'm heading to the Bronx, I'll see you later Jamie.."
"Aye!" Jamie called just grinning like the devil he was holding her firm. "Now stop thrashin about.. I haven't hurt you... you hurt me might I add. You've got a hell of a punch.."
