Pup ran down the street as fast as he could, awfully scared. He had wandered into the Bronx, he did that often, didn't really know or care where he sold, he didn't really know the city that well, after all, he was only seven years old, and he had spent much of those years shut up in a Manhattan Mansion, his Mother had never really let him go anywhere.
He had seen a bull wandering the street he had been on, Pup had a fear of bulls and always avoided them as best he could, his father probably had all the bulls on a lookout for his missing son, and Pup wasn't going to take the chance of being sighted. He had ducked into an alley, leaving the busy crowded streets, he had been walking away, trying to get to a back street when he heard some noise behind him, he turned and before he knew some boys were on him, a small gang it had to have been.
Pup escaped with a swollen eye and a bloody lip, terrified, and had lost all his previously earned selling money, he had left all his papes behind when he fled. Scared they would be after him, he looked for a place to hide, he didn't like the noisy streets. He saw the quaint little book store and pushed the door open, trying to enter as quietly as possible, not wanting to be spotted. He just wanted to catch his breath and stay away from danger for a little while. He hid by the large stacks and bookshelves of books.

Evie groaned and folded her arms when she saw the kid ducking into the bookstore, good grief, she didn't mind the newsies hiding in here now and again she knew a few-- well, sighing she leaned on the shelf and looked down at the kid.
She wasn't a bleeding heart, "You can't hide in here forever.."

"You can't hide in here forever.."
He looked up a little surprised, and then sighed, before gingerly picking up a big book and holding it up.
"I wasn't hiding, I was finding a b-book!" He replied, stuttering a little, looking at the title: Antique Furniture
He made a little guilty look, as he peered back up at her, smiling and then letting out a nervous laugh," Hehe...?"

Evie shook her head and reached over takin the book from him, she was a girl that grew up in splendor and preferred this life. She had enough money she didn't have to work but, well-- she sighed and set the book back on the shelf.
"Being in here isn't going to solve your problems you know," though books once upon a time had been her escape.

He watched her take the book from him and then she looked down at him and shook her head at him again.
"Being in here isn't going to solve your problems you know,"
Pup sighed dejectedly. "Well I just wanted to stay in here for a little while, and...well, I don't have that many problems...not that many. And anywhere I go its not like the one problem will get solved..." He trailed off.

She rolled her eyes, she really had little patience for children to be honest-- about as much patience as she had for anyone. Folding her arms she sighed, "Break it you buy it or work it off... and I'm not a shrink, a cop, or a mother so you're on your own as far as that goes."

"Break it you buy it or work it off... and I'm not a shrink, a cop, or a mother so you're on your own as far as that goes."
He gave a little huff at this and gave her a little stubborn look, folding his arms across his chest, " Well apparently, I can tell."
"I didn't think you were any of those things. Girls ain't cops."

She snorted so what? Shaking her head she turned away from him and put the book back on the shelf, he was stubborn kid. But he was in her shop and she would give him hell if she had too. "You're right about that, but it won't always be that way.."

"You're right about that, but it won't always be that way.."
He watched her, feeling a little bad for his last couple remarks. Being the little seven year old he was, he figured maybe if he was nicer, she would be nicer.
"Yeah, I guess it won't. But I guess ladies are treated okay now, I mean the rich ones," He said thinking of his own Mother, who ordered anything and everything she wanted, when Pup had ran away from home, all she had cared about was her new fountain she was getting for her garden. He didn't mean it against this lady though.
"Well not all rich ladies, I mean..." He stopped and sighed, he wasn't doing such a good job at this. He sighed and frowned a moment, until he got an idea.
He put a big toothy grin on his dirt smudged face and said," I'm Pup! Well that's what they call me, I'm really Stuart Dawkins, but you can call me Pup. Pup Dawkins. What's yar name, lady?" He asked smiling curiously, and bending down to tie his untied shoelaces.

She lifted a brow as he started to ramble folding her arms as she watched and listened, things were different she'd lived the rich life and now she lived the well off life that didn't have any of the society obligations. She was just the woman who owned the book store. "Evangeline.." she responded when he asked her what her name was. "Evangeline MacLeane.."

"Evangeline MacLeane.."
Pup nodded, that grin spreading across his face. "That's a nice name, it ryhmes!" He then repeated the name in his mind, Evangeline, that made the word Tangerine pop into his head and he started giggling. But he didn't think that Evangeline would find it very funny if he called her a Tangerine...

She blinked when he said it rhymed and rolled her eyes a little before she shook her head and headed towards the other stacks. "You can stay for a couple minutes but then you need to move alone... "

"You can stay for a couple minutes but then you need to move alone... "
He sighed, wishing he could stay a little longer, he liked the bookshop and how it was so small and comforting. He watched her with his dark blue eyes and then asked matter of factly, "You don't like me very much, do you?"

Her brow lifted and she turned around, what was with this kid? She shook her head and looked at him, "You are seven years old, you sell papers, I have nothing against you but I'm not going to take care of you.... I have no patience for children much and I have work to do.."
