A cozy little home, it's a nice place to get a meal from the generous Mrs. Jacobs!

After selling my papes, I went back to my apartment and grabbed some bread and milk. I went to sit down on the roof and I looked over in Manhatten.

(( New Day ))
Les was just at the Manhattan Lodging House with his new "brother" Pup, and invited him to stay at his apartment, since the kid had no place to stay and no money.
Walking into the house, he sat down on the bed and said, "Pup, come sit on the bed, it's comfy." He laughed as he said this, and was wondering when David was going to get home.

"Wow Les, it is comfy." Pup bounced a little on the bed, his face full of wonder. "I guess I forgot how a bed feels, I'm so used to sleeping in me crate. He pointed to the bed across the room. "Who's bed is that?"

David walked slowly up the steps to his family’s apartment. It had been a very long day and all he wanted to do was collapse on his bed and sleep for a hundred years.
That was why he couldn’t quite restrain his look of dismay when he opened the door and saw Les chatting with a ragged boy David didn’t know.
“Les,” David said, running his hand roughly through his hair. “What’s going on here? Who’s this?” He looked at the other boy again, taking in the dirty face and hungry expression common to street kids. He felt his heart soften a bit. “Where did you come from?” he asked more gently.

“Les,” David said, running his hand roughly through his hair. “What’s going on here? Who’s this?”
Les jumped when David walked into the room. "Oh, heya Davey! Dis is Pup. I gave him his nickname, and he came into Tibby's when I was der with Mabel, and he was dirty, and Mr.Tibby almost kicked him out, instead I bought him some soup! And then, after we ate, we brought him back to da lodgin' house." Taking in a deep breath, Les started over again, "I cleaned him up and gave him a bath, and got him some new clothes, and he said that he didn't have any money, or any family, and he was sleeping in a crate in an alley...so I invited him ta stay heah. Please Davey? Can he stay? Please?" Les practically begged.

Pup surveyed Davey from a distance, cowering behind Les and shaking a little. Les said that Davey was a nice brother but Pup couldn't be sure.
"I'm fr-from an al-alley in Brooklyn. I got me own crate ta sleep in....s- sir." Pup said shakily.

David put a hand lightly on Les’ head. “That’s enough,” he said, halting the boy’s rambling. Les was a good kid and always wanted to help kids less fortunate than him, but could he ever talk!
"I'm fr-from an al-alley in Brooklyn. I got me own crate ta sleep in....s- sir."
David knelt down in front of Pup. “You don’t need to call me ‘sir,’” he said, smiling at the frightened boy. “I’m David.” He held out his hand for the boy to shake. “And, yes, you can stay if you want. We have room.” David felt his smile flicker a little and turned away so Pup couldn’t see. He was glad to help this one boy, but the sight of him sitting in the cozy apartment just reminded David of all the kids who would be spending the night on the streets.
“Are you hungry, Pup?” he asked to distract himself from his worries.

“That’s enough,”
Les smiled brightly at David, and giggled a bit. Then he noticed that Pup was sitting behind him shaking, he turned around and hugged him. "It's alright, dat's David, remembah me tellin' ya bout him? He ain't gunna hurt ya."
“And, yes, you can stay if you want. We have room.”
His smile brightened and he was very happy. Jumping on David he said, "Thanks Davey!"

Pup looked up at Davey with those big blue eyes.
"No sir, i mean David. I ain't hungry anymore, Les bought me soup at Tibby's." He still watched DAvey a little cautiously he had trouble trusting new people.

"Thanks Davey!"
David smiled at his brother, unwinding Les’ arms from around his waist. “Just don’t make this a regular habit, okay, Les?” With that he moved to the kitchen and began rummaging through the cupboards. Their living situation had improved a bit since Papa has gone back to work, but David’s schooling put a strain on the family’s funds. The cupboards weren’t quite bare, but they weren’t overflowing either.
"No sir, i mean David. I ain't hungry anymore, Les bought me soup at Tibby's.”
David smiled over his shoulder at the small boy. “Let me give you a bit of bread and a warm drink at least.” He put the kettle on the stove and began cutting their last loaf of bread. They would need to stop at the bakery tomorrow. Leaving the water to boil, David sat down at the dinner table and beckoned for the boys to join him. “I hope you two weren’t too rough on poor Mabel.”

“Just don’t make this a regular habit, okay, Les?”
"I won't I promise! But, I finally got a little brother! " Les was so happy he started jumping up and down excitedly.

Pup stopped jumping, remembering what David saying something about that Mabel girl.
"No we weren't bein' ough on her, Dave. Les was bein' real polite and said he didn't know her age cuz it was improper ta ask a lady dat." Pup's face was very serious when he said all this.

"I won't I promise! But, I finally got a little brother! "
David chuckled as he set the bread on plates around the table. “Yeah,” he said. “I suppose you do.”
As Pup leaped up and down, David couldn’t help smiling. Les had picked a nice one. “Hey, Pup,” David said gently as he sat down. “Do you have a name beyond Pup?” He understood if Pup would rather keep his name to himself. Some newsies took their aliases very seriously. It was a sign of acceptance and belonging. Still, it couldn’t hurt to ask. “Of course,” David added. “If you prefer Pup, that’s fine with me. Mama might think it’s a bit funny, though.”
"No we weren't bein' ough on her, Dave. Les was bein' real polite and said he didn't know her age cuz it was improper ta ask a lady dat."
David couldn’t help bursting out laughing. “Well, that’s good,” he gasped. “I’m glad you were well-behaved.”
Suddenly, the kettle let out a shrill screech. “Ah,” said David, pushing his chair back. “There’s the tea.”
