“Hey, Pup, Do you have a name beyond Pup?”
Les' eyes widened. When he asked Pup that, he didn't get much of a welcoming into his life. But, if Les had to realize that, then so did Davey.

Pup took his cup of tea and looked down at it. He gobbled up his bread quickly. He was starving again.
“Hey, Pup, Do you have a name beyond Pup?”
He stared up at David for a moment uncertainly.
"Stuart, Stuart Dawkins." He said slowly. "But you can just keep callin' me Pup. Pup Dawkins. Are ya sure I can stay heah? Won't your mother mind? " He asked kind of timidly. He was kind of nervous and shook a little.

Stuart, Stuart Dawkins. But you can just keep callin' me Pup. Pup Dawkins.
“Stuart,” said David thoughtfully. “That’s a nice name, but if you like Pup, that’s fine with me.” He chuckled. “Though I bet with a name like Pup, you’ll grow up to be the biggest newsie in New York, just for irony’s sake.”
David smiled as he watched the smaller boys stare at their tea. “Drink up,” he said to the boys. “Mama always said a hot drink keeps you healthy when it gets cold.” David was speaking mostly to Pup, who looked like he had seen some hard times. Sleeping in a crate… David shook his head. It just wasn’t right.
“Won't your mother mind? "
“Mama? Mind?” David laughed. “She’ll love you. If anything, she’ll probably scold Les for not bringing you here sooner.” He grinned at his little brother, letting Les know that he was joking – mostly.

Les cocked his head to the side a little bit, but smiled back at his older brother. Taking a sip of his tea, Les didn't know it was so hot and started jumping up and down. "Hot! Hot!"

Pup stared at Les, and his dark blue eyes lit up.
"Les, ya'r funny!" and Pup started giggling, watching Les jump around.

David quickly snatched the cup away from Les before he could spill it on himself. "Be more careful!" he scolded. "You'll scald your tongue and not be able to taste anything for a week." David rolled his eyes at himself. Could he have sounded more like his mother.
Even as he shook his head at Les' amazing ability to injure himself, David couldn't help smiling at Pup's obvious delight. It was good to see the boy smile. He looked like he'd seen some rough times.
"So, Pup," said David, taking a careful sip of his own tea. "How did you end up running into Les anyway?" He would have asked his brother directly, but the boy would probably be unwilling to tell a long story with a burned mouth.

Les tried to perfeorm a glare to his brother, but he just couldn't do it. He hadn't ment to burn his tongue, but, as you know he's only tenn years old.
Turning to Pup, he was practically boucning in his chair, wanting to tell the story, but not being able too.

Pup fidgeted in his chair and stared down at his teacup.
"Well, I'd been living in dat alley for a while, and I was tryin' ta sell me papes, but no luck. So I was hungry, cuz I didn't have no money to buy food. I was wandering around and I caught sent of food so I followed it til' I got ta Tibby's. I went in and I asked if he had any extra food. The big man got mad and said he didn't give food ta streetrats. He said he only feeds payin' customers. So I was walkin' a way and Les came runnin' up and brought me over to his table and he said he would buy me somethin. So he bought me soup." Pup finished, taking a deep breath and staring up at Davey waiting for his response.

[Sorry for the delay. College has devoured by life. =])

David listened wide-eyed to the story. He was sorry to see a tiny kid like Pup forced to fend for himself, but it was even worse to see supposedly virtuous adults denying him food. David could understand some people being afraid of the more rough-and-tumble street kids, but Pup was little more than a waif. He couldn't do anyone any harm.
"That was a good thing you did," David said to Les, who was fidgeting with his usual energy in his chair. He turned back to Pup and smiled. "You can stay here as long as you like," he said. "We can get you a bath and put you in some of Les' clothes if you like. Then you can get a good night's sleep." David couldn't imagine it could be comfortable sleeping in a crate on a Brooklyn street.

Again Pup was just overwhelmed with happiness. He started jumping up and down a huge grin on his face as he shouted, "I can stay!!!! Oh boy!! A real home!!!! A real family!!!!! I got two older brothers!!!!!!!!!! Oh boy!!!!!!!!" He kept jumping up and down like an excited little pup so happy. He kept grinning and finally stopped bouncing feeling tired.

((New Day))
Sarah stood along the fire escape outside her apartment, leaning an elbow on the railing. She had just gotten home from work and was told by her mother to hang the laundry and fold what was already dry. Instead she took a small detour to the fire escape instead of going straight to the roof. Her own thoughts had been carrying her away lately. She found herself daydreaming a lot more than she use to. Things around her were indeed changing. Whether they were for better or worse, she was unsure of.
