Gwennie turned around abruptly, surprised by the interruption "Hi" she answered, smiling amiably before turning back around to face Maggie "So...what was it like?" she asked, her enthusiasm heightened by the fact that she was not alone in wanting to know the answer.

Maggie nodded to the new comer. "Well eight.." Damn, the kids were getting younger and younger...at least Gwennie had all her fingers still.
"California is wild. My father was a 49niner...he panned for gold." She smiled slightly. "Ain't a lot of girls out there...so ya gotta be tough...but its warm most of the year...and its just nice and open, lots of sunshine and air."

Ada nodded at that and looked down at Gwennie, she smiled as she listened to the story, coughing a little. "A lot of sunshine huh?" it sounded like a great place to be. She tilted her head to the side and thought for a time. "I miss real sunshine-- not the sunshine threw all the buildings.."

"It's still real sunshine" retorted Gwennie, somewhat defensively "it's da only sunshine I evah seen an' i like it jus' fine" she continued a bit less defensively. Truth be told, she really would like to see how sunshine looked in other places but she didn't have the money or the time to go anywhere so she had to make herself enjoy what she could see. "but California shoah does sound nice" she admitted turning to Mabel again "How long didja live dere?" she asked, still fascinated Maggie's description of the strange and wonderful place called California.

Maggie grinned down at Gwennie. "You are right..it is real sunshine. But I guess its the openness that makes it different--there aint no big buildings around where I grew up." She smiled. "The ocean is so pretty too." She paused. "I lived there for 13 years...but well.." She shrugged. "My dad got himself killed, so we moved back here to live with my grandfather."

Ada looked between them and took that in for awhile, before she shrugged. "They sky is the same no matter where you go but how you see it changes with the way the land looks.. I like it here, it's different than Sicily.." There were almost no two places on the earth the same.

Gwennie raised an eyebrow, she had never heard of that country before and, having lived in New York her entire life she had heard of a lot of countries. "Sicily?" she repeated inquisitively, turning to face Adalina "I nevah heard a' dat country before. where is it?"

Maggie grinned, nodding at Ada. "Yes, tell us about Sicily, Ada..." She put her hands on her hips, her curls bouncing. "I got to speak on California...your turn."

"It's days and days by boat over sea and around Spain and Portugal, right under Italy.." Ada laughed and folded her arms as she tried to think about it. "It's warm all the time, and the breeze off of the water just makes you want to stand there and take it all in. I miss the breeze and the sun, I used to run on the beach when I was little--"

Gwennie was surprised that there seemed to be so many places where it never got very cold. she couldn't inagine not having a real winter with snow and Ice. Sure, it was miserable to sell in, but it was great to play in and she wouldn't trade it for the world. "How long ya been heah?" she asked "ya seen one a' our wintahs yet?"

She looked over at Maggie, smiled slightly before she looked back at Gwennie. "Since I was seven, actually... I hadn't ever seen snow before it took almost two hours for my brother to convince me it was okay to go outside and play-- it was so cold I was against it at first but it eventually grew on me.."

"yeah, it's pretty fun" Gwennie stated, grinning cheerfully "last wintah, Rhoda an' I brought 'er lil' sistah Harriett out ta play in da snow for da first time an' she took one step out and sunk waist deep in it" she laughed, remembering the look on Harriett's face when she sunk into the snow "da snow plowah had been by an' pushed all da snow ta da side, right in front a' da door an' she didn't know. She was so shoked dat she jus' sorta stood dere for a moment an' den she started cryin' an' we had ta take 'er back in. She was so scared it would happen again dat she wouldn't even give it a second try 'til da next day"

She grinned at her when she told her the story, it made her chuckle a little. Everytime someone spoke about a story like that Ada thought about all the times she'd spent with Pete as a kid running around the city before they both got old, before she got a job to survive.
Her eyes darted over to Maggie and she let out a breath, "Speaking of friends, can I talk to you about something important later Mags.. seemed like you were taking the little mite here to dinner and I don't want to intrude..."

Ada had her hair up and muttered as she coughed, it was getting adgitation. She hadn't had a letter from her parents in about a month and Pete was no where to be found. She hadn't felt this alone in ages. She glanced sideways at Cinzia and she managed a small smile before it bloomed.
"Cinzia--" Her accent was very foreign, she was Sicilian after all, hard to misplace the air that they had.

(New Day)
Rhoda sat on the edge of the wall near the textile mill with Milo, eating her meager lunch. he had come over to visit with her after he had finished selling. "sorry I don't have that long to talk" she muttered through the mouthful of sandwich that she was eating. "It's just that I only have a few minutes for lunch and the boss will fire me if I'm late"
