"Macy. Macy Dawkins Sietz. I don't remember her dat well. She was playful wit me and fun but when she was wit Mama she acted like a good proper goil. She was pretty." Pup said softly staring down at his hands and then glancing up at Gwennie again.

"she sounds nice" replied Gwennie gently, putting her hand on his shoulder consolingly. she wasn't quite sure how that was supposed to make people happier, but they did in the flickers, though she had only seen one, and she'd seen people do it in real life, so she figured it must work somehow. In an attempt to cheer up the situation, she casually, yet playfully added " but I don't put no stock in bein' good an' proper myself. Aftah all, I'm a Brooklyn newsie ain't I? I'm tough" she flexed her barely visible muscles and put an exaggeratedly mean expression on her face.

Pretending to look offended, she put her hands on her hips and turned her head slightly away from pup "Why I'd nevah!" she gasped in exaggerated indignance " I could so scare a fly! I'll have you know that I scared a whole lotta flies in my life. Even when I was a tiny baby, I scared 'em all da time!" Struggling to keep a straight face, she twirled her chair back around to face Pup, accidentally hitting her arm on the counter in the process.

*New Day* (For Murdoch)
Hannalee had just sold all her newspapers for the first time. She felt a small pride rising up inside of her. She remembered her father used to say if you worked at something, you would achieve.
She couldn't quite help but feel a pang of loneliness as well. She had nobody to share this accomplishment with, her being so new to the newsies and all. She sighed and let a small content smile take over her frown. So what if she was lonely? Why let the whole city know it?
She had heard there was a soda parlor and candy store in Brooklyn, she just had to find it. Finally spotting it across the street, she entered the little shop, smiling as the little bell jingled, as if it was announcing her royal entrance. Of course it wasn't, she just liked to imagine it that way.
She plopped down at a seet at the counter and ordered a chocolate milk shake with whip cream on top. She rested her chin in her hands as she waited, her blue eyes wandering the store.

Murdoch barely noticed the bell ring above the door to the soda parlor as his older brother, Bascom, pulled him into the store by his upper arm and placed him somewhat roughly onto a seat at the counter. "Here, all you have to do is stay here for twenty minutes, okay? That's all I ask. Just ten minutes without any major interruptions or little 'accidents' "Bascom made quotation marks in air with his fingers as he ranted on "which almost get me fired" he finished, reaching into his pocket to pull out a few coins to give his brother. "Here, take these and order yourself something while you wait. and, for the love of God, stay here" he added, handing the coins to Murdoch before turning and walking out the door.
Murdoch promptly turned in the seat and looked up at the menu and ordered a hot fudge sundae. When he had finished ordering, he began to look around for something to do while he waited for his order to come. After a few seconds, his eyes settled on the girl sitting next to him at the counter. "Hey, whatcha doin'?" he asked her, trying as hard as he could to make his voice as friendly and approachable as possible. For some reason, he kept on making people mad at him today and he didn't want that to continue. Even Hyrum had gotten mad at him and they almost always got along.

Hannalee had caught some of the goings on between a smaller blonde boy and who appeared to be her brother. A small smile grew on her face as she listened to the elder brother lecture and smiled brightly as she watched him leave with a puff. "Boys will be boys..." she thought with an amused smirk.
She looked back at the boy when he surprised her by speaking to her.
"Hey, whatcha doin'?"
Hannalee smiled brightly and her blue eyes sparkled as she answered, "Well, I'm celebrating a mild success and waiting for a milk shake. What about yourself?"

Murdoch sighed and leaned his chin on the palm of his hand. "Well, mostly I'm just waitin' for my brother to finish work. I was waitin' for him inside the store where he works but...I accidently knocked over a buncha stuff when I was leanin' down to tie my shoe an' eevery one got all mad at me an' they told Bascom that he'd be fired if he didn't get me out of there right away. An...well, you prolly saw the rest of it." he gave a small, dejected shrug "I wasn't tryin' to mess anything up. I just couldn't help it."
He gave another small sigh and looked up at the older girl. "Well, I guess it's a good day for you at least." he gave a halfhearted smile. "What success are you celebratin'. I could celebrate with you seein' as I don't got anything to celebrate."

She smiled a small smile and said, "I'm sure your brother was just angry, he just needs some time to himself and to do his job without distraction. I'm sure he knows you didn't mean to."
"Well, yes my day has been irrationally pleasant I suppose. I sold all my newspapers for the first time today. I'm a newsie, and I've only been one for a week or so." Her smile brightened at his suggestion. "Of course you can join me! I'd be delighted if you would. My name's Hannalee Isle Elis. What's yours?"

Murdoch gave a small shrug "yeah, I guess" he replied, trying to make his tone positive. "It's just that I keep on messing up today and people keep on getting upset at me." he ran a hand through his hair before taking another shot at giving himself a positive demeanor.
"well, good job!" he stated cheerily, an only slightly strained smile on his face. "i never been a newsie before but it's prolly real hard t' sell all a' those papers before the next edition comes out an' people don' want 'em no more." He held out his hand in a rehearsed manner when she introduced herself, though, by this time, his smile was genuine. "it's a pleasure to meet you, Hannalee. I'm Murdoch Ivan Austerlitz" he made sure to add his middle name since she had given hers. "an' y'know, if ya ever need help sellin' your papes, i got a two year old sister an' a seven month old brother who ya could borrow anytime ya wanted...Well, durin' the day at least. My mama makes us be home by dinner ev'ry night so after that it'd be out of the question. but for durin' the day, they could prolly pass as their mother an' evrybody knows papes sell at least twice as fast when ya got a kid with ya. heck, I'm not even a newsie an' I know that."

"It's just that I keep on messing up today and people keep on getting upset at me."
Hannalee leaned towards him and gave him another smile, "Well, I won't get upset with you. Not if I don't want to loose my celebrating partner"
"Well, that's a nice name, Murdoch. It suits you, unique just like you are," she gave him a big grin when his grin turned genuine. She hoped she could really cheer the kid up. She was an only child, but she knew that the young ones in the family usually get left out, so in a somewhat way, she could identify. When she would play with her cousins, she was the youngest and they didn't like Hannalee playing with them, so she got the gist.
"You must be very smart and a good observer to know that. Do you know many newsies?" She laughed at his offer and thought a moment before giggling. "Sounds great. I need as much help as I can get. I sometimes make my headlines too exaggerated and that doesn't get me anywhere than in my own fictional world..."
