Lexi gave him a slight shrug, "I'll probably stay in the Bronx, I'm not trying to work to far from where I live." The thought just dawned on her that she might not be able to stay in the lodging house if she didn't sell papers. Jersey City had allowed non-newsies to stay there but that was just because they needed the money to keep the house alive. She didn't want to think about that too much at the moment. Hopefully with her brother being there it wouldn't be a problem. "Besides if I tried working in a different part of the city I'd probably end up lost on a daily basis."

"Well I could always walk ya home," he said with a charming smile. "Alrighty, so... wanna stay in the Bronx huh? Smart girl," he said nodding. He had to think about where all the places to work for younger folks in the Bronx was. "Ya best bet is Webster Avenue," he informed her. "There's all sortsa jobs down there I think. I know that's where the hotel is, and ya might be able ta get a job there as maybe... a cleanin' lady or somethin'?" he offered. Be better money than sellin papers that was for sure. "But I know that all the carts go down and sell stuff on that road. Maybe you could be a vendor... just..." he chuckled a little, "vendors and newsies usually dun get along all too well." For good reason too.

Lexi laughed at his last comment, "If there anything like the vendors in Jersey City, I know exactly what you mean. Newsies just looking for something to feed their stomachs and vendors trying to protect their profit, never a good combination. I think I will head down to the hotel though, that sounds like it wouldn't be that bad of a place to work." Lexi tended to ramble on just like her younger brother, she supposed he got it from her. It was something she did without thought though.

He nodded. "Sounds like a good idea!" he was happy that she was at lesat... going to get herself straight, that's always a good sign. "I assume you're not gonna do that until tomorrow then?" he asked. He mostyl asked because, well, the sun was starting to get a little low in the sky, plus they were almost to the Bronx lodging house and a trip to Webster would have them out in New York city at night. Given Avalanche didn't mind New York at night, but he didn't know how she felt about it. And in New York it was reasonable to be scared of the dark when you're alone.

Lexi smiled and nodded her head slightly, "Yeah, I figured I'd wake up a little early tomorrow and try to find my way there." She usually woke up pretty early, she was a newsie after all. "Good thing I brought my nice dress with us." They couldn't take all of their belongings and Lexi had ended up giving away a few of her skirts. She knew she'd probably never be able to buy more but they couldn't fit them in their bags. At least she hadn't gotten rid of all of her nice ones.

Avalanche nodded and smiled brightly. "I'm sure ya look real pretty in it too," he wasn't gonna lie, it couldn't hurt.
"Listen, if ya ever run inta any problems with newsies, or a place to stay or anythin', tell 'em to take it up with Avalanche," he said. "'Cause if ya ask me, so long as someone in ya family is a newsie, you're safe in the lodgin' houses. And if they kick ya out, you come and find me in Brooklyn," he said. He remembered how hard it was comin' out of the newsies and bein' on his own, there wasn't a support system for newsies once they werent newsies anymore. So, he decided to become that support system. He had an apartment and a job, he'd do all he could to help out these kids, they were his friends and his family too.

Lexi smiled at his compliment and a slight red tinge showed on her cheeks. She wasn't used to honestly nice compliments, she was used to guys who gave her raunchy compliments. When Avalanche finished talking, Lexi gave him her biggest smile. It was so nice to meet someone and have them take her under their wing. Being the oldest meant that she had to be the responsible one. She may have had times when she wasn't completely responsible but she'd always been the one to make sure they had food and a place to live. "Thank you, Avalanche, you don't know how much that means to me. It's nice to meet someone who thinks of others as much as you obviously do."

Avalanche smiled and laughed a little. "Others? Naw, I dun think of others. I think of the newsies," he said. "They ain't others, their my family, I hafta take care of 'em," he said with a soft smile. "And ya welcome," he added.
He assumed that being a girl in New York wasn't a simple job. He guessed this because his successor, Prince, was a girl, and she had been havin' a rough time too. But that was the thing, women are expected to take care of those younger than themselves, but who is to take care of the women? In this case, it was Avalanche.

Lexi smiled and nodded her head, Avalanche just seemed like such a genuinely nice person that she couldn't help but want to befriend him. She wasn't usually the type of person to trust someone right away, but he had done nothing but show her that all people aren't horrible. Maybe coming to New York wasn't such a bad thing. "It's nice that you think of the newsies as family, even though you've moved on. A lot of people I was friends with in Jersey City moved on and forgot about the people they used to depend on."

Avalanche laughed. "In New York that's just dumb!" he said laughing harder. "You forget the people that depended on you? You forget the people that you depended on... you'll never get anywhere. Feel free to make new friends, but never forget where ya came from. For some people, their past is all they got, and for others... the past is just what they don't want," he said with a rather serious tone to his voice. "But you need to remember the people," he said nodding. "Forget just one little person... and you could regret it," he advised her.
He suddenly smiled brightly, "Plus! Everyone needs friends, without friends you get lonely, bored, and don't really do very much interesting stuff at all really," he said with a chuckle.

Lexi laughed and nodded her head, "That is true, everyone needs friends." She understood what he meant about forgetting people, she'd never be able to forget people from her past friends or otherwise. Especially the otherwise. It could be incredibly dangerouse for a lot of people. For some reason she'd always found that it was easier to make enemies than friends. "I know I for one, enjoy the company of others so I always like making new friends."

"Then you oughta be right at home with the newsies," he said nodding to her with a bright smile. "Have you made other friends in the Bronx?" he assumed she had. she was such a nice person friends probably came easy to her. It was just a matter of whether or not she'd had time to meet anyone else yet. He knew the Bronx girls were typically smart, and rather congenial in general, so he was sure that Lexi fit in perfectly.

Lexi game him and shrug and smiled, "Haven't really had the chance. I'm usually off chasing after Perry, this is the first real time I've gotten to myself and I got myself lost before you came along." She smiled, "I'm sure in time I will, I just don't get much time to be honest. With work and my younger brothers, I had a few friends back home but not many." She didn't mind it, in her opinion taking care of her family was a full time job. Of course, she had also not made many friends because she was too busy gambling and drinking but she didn't feel the need to share that. Plus since they'd moved hear she'd sworn to Reid that she wouldn't touch a deck of cards or a bottle of liquor. Her brothers were her life and she had to prove that to him all over again.

Avalanche nodded. "Perry's your... brother right? You had two brothers you said," he thought that's what she had said anyway. It made him miss his own brother and sister, though he preferred not to think nor talk about them.
"Well, the good news is, making friends in the Bronx ain't hard at all! You walk in the door and b'fore you can say 'bob's ya uncle' you'll have girls greatin' ya, commentin' on ya dress, and hair and... I swear ya can't walk in there without someone saying hello. Never try sneakin' in, it just dun work," he said with a smirk.

Lexi nodded when he asked about Perry, "Yeah the youngest of all of us and he's the sweetest little thing." She smiled thinking about him, she had missed him today but he wanted to go with Reid and she had needed to start looking for a job.
"It's nice to hear that the girls are that nice, I know in Jersey City there were some great girls and then some ones that weren't altogether that friendly." She had gotten along with most of the girls and hadn't really spoken to the ones that she didn't like. Of course, she hadn't felt incredibly comfortable around them when it was just her in the room with one of them. It would be nice to be comfortable with all of them and not just some of them.
