<<new day>>
Peem sighed, looking over the fruit. He could probably buy enough for Davey--he needed it more than him and his mother right now, really. But...maybe. He picked up an extra piece. It was silly really, not something that would probably make a difference; but if he saw that Chance kid again, soon, he'd offer him some. He knew fruit was expensive, and it was the least he could do--besides, he wanted to see him agian.

Chance was using Webster Avenue as a change of scenery, and if he was lucky, an opportunity to make a bit more money. Things had been wearing thin recently and while he didn't mind the shelter of an abandoned doorway when the summer air turned slightly cooler in the evenings, the pelting rain that had fallen last night hadn't exactly been a thrill. He ran his fingers through his hair, pulling his hat into place and glanced around for the best place for him to set up and attract some attention.
Instead it was someone who attracted his attention. Peem, lingering in front of the fruit vendor and mulling over a fruit selection. Chance could have passed him by without a word, it was doubtful the other man even remembered him after the encounter in the gazebo, but Chance could admit to being intrigued and hopeful. So he switched directions, his long legs carrying over to the vendor with ease, a slow almost shy smile playing across his lips. "Fancy meeting you here."

Peem heard the voice, turning, nearly dropping the apples and oranges he had bought, blushing straight to his hair--something he wasn't used to doing. "Oh hi!" He scrambled to keep everything from falling, feeling like a fool. Chance must think he was horribly gittery or something else.
Here he was, acting like an idiot, over the one person he was hoping to see.

Chance reached over and caught an errant apple which was rolling out of Peem's scrambling grasp. A smile tugged at Chance's lips and his insides warmed as Peem's eyes rose to meet his. "Hi...I..." He carefully set the apple back in Peem's arms and dropped his hand away, fingering the edges of his drawing paper. "Didn't mean to scare you."

"Oh you didn't scare me..." Peem shrugged, grinning lopsidedly; oh his luck. "Sorry I was just thinking about you, and bam! you appear out of the blue. I was just startled." He shrugged his arms again, gesturing to one of the apples. "I bought you one." ...wow, that sounded cute.

"You were thinking about me?" Chance repeated, feeling his smile grow a little larger at the thought, then his eyes widening as Peem gestured at one of the fruits in his arms. "Really?" Chance said softly, his stomach growling at the mere thought of the sweet fruit and he felt a blush touch his cheeks. "Thanks..." Well, that was profound, he mentally kicked himself as he reached for the apple and tried not to bite into it with too much gusto.

Peem shrugged. "Well I know times are hard for all of us--I had a good time talking to you in the Gazebo...I figured you didn't get much fruit. I was buying some for my brother, and thought maybe you'd like a piece." He smiled as he watched Chance eat. "I'm glad that you do."

"I had a good time talking to you too," Chance said, in between bites of apple, his dark eyes studying Peem over the fruit. He could see the kindness in his warm brown eyes, just as he remembered it from their one conversation before. "And thank you, I do..." he smiled a little before taking another bite, wiping at his mouth with the back of his hand. "It's been a rough couple of days."

"Really? Why?" He gestured to a nearby bench, sitting down, packing the rest of the fruit away, making sure he wasn't going to bruise it. "Well, I mean I know why some of it could be hard..I mean." He laughed, embarassed. "Sorry, I didn't...well you understand, I'm sure."

Chance followed Peem over to the bench and sat down beside him, stretching his long legs out and looking down at the half eaten apple in his hand, dirt and grime crusting his fingers. "Well...it's not like my living situation is a big secret. Kind of hard to hide." He shrugged and took another bite of the apple, enjoying the sweet taste of it before glancing over at the other man. "It's been raining at nights...can be hard to find a good place to sleep that isn't already taken." He shrugged again, used to the trials of the streets, even if they were rough. "And people aren't nearly as...giving in the summer heat."

"Mmm...yeah." Peem shrugged, looking over Chance for a moment. He wasn't sure if he should offer it, but it was always something he had to do--he couldn't stand it when people were unkind to others. "Look. If you ever need a place to stay when its raining--my family's apartment is tiny, but we do have a rundown couch you could sleep on. Me mum wouldn't mind; and I'm sure my brother would love to look at your drawings."

Chance was startled into silence at the soft offer, hardened by years on the street and knowing that offers like this didn't often come without a price tag. But as he turned to look fully into Peem's face, studied the other man's face, he knew that nothing would be asked in return. "That's very kind Peem...I...I wouldn't want to intrude," Chance deflected, appreciating the offer but not knowing if he could accept such a thing from a stranger. "You barely know me."

Peem raised an eyebrow, laughing. "Ach, well you know nothing about us Scots! Every stranger is a friend, mate." He shrugged, trying to be more serious. "In all honesty, we believe in reading people--you got a good soul, Chance. I know I don't have to fear you trying anything." He smiled. "Not everyone in the world is harsh."

"A good soul, huh?" Chance repeated with a slight smile, rubbing at his chin and taking the last bite of the apple, considering Peem's offer. "Hard to argue with something like that. You forget you know...when you see some of the things I've seen. There is some good left in people in the world." Chance mused on this for a few minutes, turning the apple core between his fingers. "How old is your brother?"

Peem nodded, "Wasn't judging...I understand. After all, I could be a bad guy; you have to be careful, I suppose." He chewed on his lip, already thinking what his mom was making for dinner--he ight have to cut back on his own share, but it made him happy to think that Chance might get a bit of warm food. "He's 10 now." He smiled. "Davey's the best. Most of the reason I work so hard is so he can go to school."
