Michael watched as the kids left, a bit relieved to see them go. He felt horrible for having those young girls in the cell, and had been determined to smuggle them some food before leaving that night. He sighed and sat down behind the desk-- he was glad it didn't have to come to that.

<<new day>>
Ariannette sighed, stepping up to the counter at the Prison. She knew Clarence had worked here for a while; perhaps she'd find someone who knew him. She needed to talk to some cop, someone who might be able to help her. She was dressed in her best--a green satin dress, her blond curls coifed back into the latest hair style...she knew she did better in stressful situations when she looked her best.
And she knew this was going to be a stressful situation.

Marlon was working on the paper work he'd had to-- edit. Getting these newsies and other random riff raff off of the street was no easy job and without Carter around to make it easier the new police Chief-- was going to have a difficult time. He'd need more hands one men.
He lifted his eyes to the woman, "Might I-- help you miss?"

Aria took a deep breath, smoothing out her hair, before flashing her best smile. "Hello. I need to report a missing person." Her lawyer told her that if she could get Clarence declared dead, she could be a widow; the stigma of that was much less than being a divorcee.

"A missing person?" he lifted a brow and pulled out the papers, it was going to be a long day. First there had been getting rid of that dirty little orphan child and the the paperwork editting. And he still had to get home because he'd promises his daughter his time. But true to his job he lifted his eyes to Aria.
"The person's name please?"

"Clarence Carter." She tossed her curls slightly, looking evenly at the Sargent. "He's been missing for six months." Her mouth was set in a firm line, her arms crossed over her chest. "I figure I have to go through the motions before I have him declared dead."

The officer's brow lifted, he'd been wondering about Clarence the last little while himself, honestly he was really hoping this would not come to pass. There was no telling what would have happened to one of his favorite detectives but he nodded slowly.
"We will have to investigate, Madam. You see the steps for a police office gone missing are a little bit different then that of a normal person.." He'd find Carter himself if he had too.

Aria snorted. "...He is my husband. He left my child and I high and dry." She quirked an eyebrow. "And considering he is one of your own, I would have thought you knew what happened to him. That you would have investigated this by now." She flicked a curl back. "I shouldn't have to suffer for your incompatency."

Marlon held up his hands, "He's not in my department, ma'am. And you do have a point.." The woman was huffy, not like his own wife but incredibly huffy. Sighing he played the game. "I will get the men in the investigations department right on it, Madam and we will do whatever we have to do to get to the bottom of Carter's disappearance."
Marlon thought he'd gotten transferred.

Aria sighed. "Thank you. I'm...sorry." She wasn't ever good at apologies. "My life is balanced on my public persona. I need to be able to declare him dead so that I can be a widow, not a divorcee." She shrugged. "Much better for my child, as well."

He nodded his head, considering it and knowing it was true. "My wife would be in here as well after six months, but she would be demanding me either declared dead or just dead. So I understand. We will do all we can for you, madam.."

Aria smiled a bit larger, relaxing a bit more. "Thank you. I truely appreciate it. I just...I couldn't wait any longer." She shrugged. "He isn't coming back, for whatever reason. Perhaps he is dead; perhaps he got caught up in something--he wasn't the most lawful member of the law."

Marlon knew that and it was one of the reasons he'd liked him so much. But he was not going to tell Carter's wife that.
"No need to worry, madam. I assure you we will find out what happened to your husband and do all we can.." he'd have to find a way to contact Carter, either he come back or he go deeper under cover where ever he was and stay there. Let his wife go.

"Thank you." She smiled again. "If you need to find me, I'm at the Caprice Ballroom." She started to head out the door.

He nodded his head, "Good day, madam I will do just that.."
