Manhattan walked into Tibby's,her mind completely engrossed in thoughts of her own. If she could find a seat and a napkin she could jot it down and focus on finding a job. rapping her hip on the corner of a table she swore under her breath and amended that statement to focusing on where she was walking. Her hip smarting and pulling her attention away from the thoughts she looked closer at the interior of Tibby's, surprisingly it wasn't busy at all. "slow day for everyone" she muttered. Spotting Sweets she headed towards the small table. Not quite being to make out who was sitting with her, she nodded to Sweets and the guy on Sweet's left. "Sweets" pulling up a chair Manhattan reached across the guy on her right and took a napkin out of its holder, sat down, grabbed the pencil that was holding her hair up and began to write. With her head bent and her hair obscuring her face, the sound of Manhattan's pencil scratching away filled the silence at the table.

Sweets nodded and smiled, but gave her friend a quizzical look as she sat down. "You come here ta eat or write a novel?"

"novel" Manhattan looked up with a crooked smile and winked at the guy to her right before scribbling a tad bit more on her napkin. tapping her pencil on the table top she read over what she had written, making harsh scratches and writing over it, "I'll get whatevah cheapest...water works" She mumbled around the pencil she had begun chewing as her eyes once again scanned the lines before her, then ending with a very punctuated period she folded the napkin and put it in her vest pocket. Chewing some more on her pencil she leaned back against her chair and stared a bit out of focus. Some hair fell in front of her eyes, interrupting her gaze and she shook her head to clear it. Almost like the hair had broken her out of her reverie. Keeping the pencil in her mouth she grinned her crooked smile whole heartedly at Sweets as if she had just now seen her there. "How's Business?"

Sweets had been silently observing her friend, and so it took her a moment to realize she was being spoken to. "Oh. Well, great actually. I 'aven't made this much in one day for a long time. An' the warm weathah makes sellin' papes not seem so bad again, ya know?" The winter was always hard to get through, and by January Sweets had sworn she was finished with the paper selling business. However, just like the past four years, she reconsidered once spring rolled around.

"Dont i know it." Manhattan murmured more to herself knowing how Sweets went from loving being a Newsie in the spring, summer, and fall and almost quitting during the winter. Manhattan continued to chew on her pencil. " Where were ya a minute ago?" She asked her knowing Sweet's hadn't thought she would notice. Her grin growing slightly bigger and her eyes were for once focused, this time on Sweets and not the words in her head. Manhattan wanted to see if Sweet's would say what was on her mind. Blowing her bangs again out of her eyes, she exchanged a glance with Kid Blink, took her pencil out of her mouth, twirling it around her finger and put it back in. Just Waiting.

Sweets just grinned, shaking her head slightly. "No wheah interestin', I promise ya that much." Leaning forward in her chair Sweets attempted to see what her friend had been so furiously scribbling away about. "What ya writin' about this time?"

"Well arent we a nosy one today Sweets? If ise didnt know any bettah I'd say you was actually interested in my words." Manhattan grinned at her, taking her pencil out of her mouth, she unfolded the napkin she had been working on and shrugged. "You know me even if its not all dat interestin i see somethin in it that would make it interestin." She fiddled with the edges of the napkin, her eyes went a bit out of focus as she spoke, remembering. "You see i ran inta an officer ta day. before sellin, good fellah but he looked like he was drownin'. Not sure what in, maybe he was drownin in duty, in corruption, in life. i dont know maybe i'm just readin to much inta it." She sighed. Looking back up at Sweet she continued. "So i kinda wrote a bit about that. I needed it ta get out of my head. Heck i can't even get the guys face out of my head but it was worth a try. I'm sure you were some place that was much more interestin than that or should i say with someone more interestin." Manhattan grinned teasingly at Sweet and sat there tapping the napkin on the table, her fingers flicking it back and forth still unable to get the young officers face, no, more his eyes out of her head. She doubted he would leave with only a few lines written about him, if at all. "But you know me, i get lost in my head with a good looking face as much as you do." she said a little embarrassed remembering the guy still at their table.

"You see i ran inta an officer ta day. before sellin, good fellah but he looked like he was drownin'. Not sure what in, maybe he was drownin in duty, in corruption, in life. i dont know maybe i'm just readin to much inta it."
Sweets grew thoughtful, her eyes giving away her wandering mind. She once knew such an officer, and thinking of him reminded her that she would never see him again. Aware her friend was speaking, but unable to tear herself from her thoughts, she missed most of what Manhattan had said.
"But you know me, i get lost in my head with a good looking face as much as you do."
Sweets was brought from her revere by this and she glanced at her friend quizzically. "What's that 'spose ta mean?" She was never one to share her feelings, and though she was easily run away with feelings and though it was often caused by the opposite sex, the idea that someone knew this about her was mortifying.

"ah hell..." Manhattan swore realizing immediately both her mistakes. this is why i shouldnt open my mouth Sweets had once told her about an old friend that was an officer and she knew better than to let on that she paid more attention to what was going on around her than most people give her credit for. Heck she pays more attention then almost anybody else, they just dont realize it. She had the gift of reading people like open books and that was why she tried not to talk. They just weren't comfortable knowing that. "...as much as you, as much as the next Newsie. Good lookin faces turns head, they turns hearts. Doesnt matter who. Though usually its guys that are more effected by them. Not fair i might add, comin from one who doesnt have much of a face to speak of." Manhattan grinned crookedly hoping against hope that it sounded like she was really just continuing her thought process. "Bet ya a nickle that that officer doesnt come ta Tibby's, nor is he turned by dis heah good lookin face." Manhattan turned her head this way and that showing off her best sides."besides he kept callin me a kid, what is one suppose to do but call him an old man to his face." Stuffing her napkin back into her vest pocket she stuck out a hand. "Bet?"

Sweets shrugged, reaching out her hand. "I bet'cha a nickel he comes in heah." She had sold a lot of papes today, so she figured she was entitled to take part in a little wager. Besides, she knew her friend never thought much of herself, and it would make her glad to see her proven wrong in this instance.

"Deal" Manhattan grinned, laying down a nickel on the table. She had little doubt of winning this bet. Looking around she realized there wasn't a single waiter and waitress in sight. Honestly where was everyone Manhattan thought to herself.
"What do you want to eat Sweets. Seems like we've been here a long time and haven't been served yet. Such service!" She said knowing full well she was making fun of her 2nd employer. Her grinned widened. "This is the type of service we get, us newsies. For shame."
Getting up she grabbed a towel off the counter and wrapped it around her waist. Then grabbing the one next to it she laid it over her arm like a real hoity toity waiter would do. Taking some napkins she placed them nicely on first Sweet lap and then the other kids lap, shaking them out first of course. This done, she stood before them, her back erect, her pencil in the air over and invisible tablet of paper and face so damn straight you would think she really was a hoity toity waitress from a high class Restaurant, if it wasnt for her clothes she could have pull it off.
"Madam, sir" she looked them up and down hiding her fake disgust with their clothing. "Welcome to Tibby's, our specials today are caviar and champagne." With a flourish she brought out the menus "What can i get you two?" She said letting them know with the tone of her voice that they didn't deserve the specials. Then being Manhattan, she just couldn't hold it in any more and snorted.
Straightening up she brought back her hoity toity persona and simply said "Excuse me, allergies." and stood there waiting for their order.

Sweets smiled at the display, never having been referred to as "madam" in all her life. Removing the napkin from her lap and tucking it obnoxiously into the front of her shirt she grinned. "Simple food for simple folk... soup an' bread outta do it, thanks Hattie."

Manhattan pretended to jot down the order her digust in the food choice and mannerism apparent in the curl of her lip. "but of course Madam" Manhattan turned sharp on her heals and walked through the swinging doors to the kitchen, back erect and whole body shouting look at me I'm hoity toity
Coming back couple seconds later Manhattan grinned at her friend. Food loaded on both arms. "Time ta eat!"

"eh eh eh not til ise gets my tip" Manhattan said to her friend, Keeping sweets food just out of her reach. The tantalizing wafting around them and she just grinned, still all hoity toity looking. Man if any of the newsies saw her they would never let her live it down.
