"I don't! I never would! I would never hurt anyone, or kill anyone! Ever! This has nothin ta do with hurtinganyone, or killin anyone! I asked, I made sure dat wasn't going to be an issue. I swear it Dusty, no one will get hurt. Some of da richer folks in New York might lose some money, but what's dat do? They got more, they'll be fine... but I swear on my life, on my faddah's grave dat I ain't gonna hoit or kill anyone. You have my woid." And so far, Avalanche has never broken his word, because once being a newsie, his word was all he had.

Her eyes searched his for a moment. She took a step back, towards the door again. "Why can't i believe that?" she whispered, her voice small and scared. She knew in her heart that he wouldn't kill anyone, but once one got involved with these kinds of people, there was no way you could be sure of the persons stants within the society. What if he started out innocently enough but then got somewhat violent? she shivered a little bit. "I thought you were better than that Alex." she felt her eyes watering again and she closed them to push them away. gripping the door frame with one hand, she turned away, she wasn't going to let him see her weak... broken. She wouldn't.

Avalanche sighed a little. He held his ground, not wanting to scare her. "Dusty... I understand if you don't believe me," to be honest, if he were her he wouldn't believe him... he hardly believed him as himself. "But I have to do this... I'm sorry," he said with a sigh as he walked back over the chouch he sat down and burried his face in his hands. He felt awful.

"How can i believe you! I feel like i don't even know you anymore." she told him, her tone hardening slightly. She gripped the door frame, attempting to take all her anger out on it. "Its not like you... the old you. Your not the man i fell in love with." she whispered, more to herself then to him. It hurt her, he was changing. She wanted the old Avalanche back...

He looked at her. "Dusty I ain't changed," he said shaking his head. He sighed a little, "I've just... I need to do this," he couldn't explain why she'd only think worse of him. "I'm the same me I've always been, just with a different job," he said. Though he knew she wouldn't believe him. He sighed and looked down at the ground again. He put a hand to his eyes. "I'm sorry."

She shook her head. "Thats what he said to..." she closed her eyes. Why did she always manage to get her heart broken? She shook her head again. "This is nuts." she sighed. "Your just like the rest of them." she accused, her heart twisted in agony.

That wasn't true! Avalanche wanted to scream and say that it all wasn't true! He wanted to explain to her every last detail, whether she believed it or not, but he wouldn't. He left things out when he told her about his past, he left out memories, and things that he should have told her from the get go. If he told her now she wouldn't blieve him, she'd think only worse of him, and a liar at that. Though his head was telling him to do so much his mouth kept a fine line, and his body held it's position. "I'm sorry you think that," was all he said, and it was quiet. "I 'm not, I'm telling you I'm not..." he sighed. "All I can say is that I wish you'd believe me." What else was there to say?

"Of course you do." she snapped at him, turning back to face him. She slid her back down the wall and sat on the floor, across the room. "Just tell me one thing..." she surveyed him warily. "If i asked you... to... not... would you?"

That was hard. Why did she have to ask THAT question?! He sighed and slowly, ever so slowly started shaking his head. "This is why I'm so sorry," he said to her. He brought his face up to look at her, and it was red, and his eyes were watering. "Because I have to. I don't think I can back out now... but... at the same time... I have to keep this job. But as soon as I think I can, and they'll let me... then I'll quit, and never go back," he said as he shook his head at her. Every word was the truth.

She sighed and got up. "I dunno..." she slowly made her way towards him and sat down on his left. "Listen, i-i don't mean your...as bad... but i dunno what i think about this whole... life of crime." she smiled sadly. "well i do... but not..." she sighed, she was now thoroughly confused. "Avalanche... please..." she reached for one of his hands.

He kept his eyes focused on her. They were full of sadness, regret, everything he wanted to say but couldn't. "I'm sorry Dusty, but I have to do this," he said sadtly. There was no turning back for him. Not now, not until it was all over.

She slowly placed a hand in his. "Okay." she said simply. She looked at there hands together. "Maybe i should just..." she motioned towards the door. It might be against his new 'rules' for her to be with him. She sighed and looked away.

He shook his head no. "Please don't go," he said holding her hand tightly. "I'll still be here as much as I can. I'll be spending nights there, but the rest of the time I'll be here as much as possible if you need me," he said looking into her eyes. "No matter what they say, you and I can stay together, because I said so." He wanted to make sure that she knew this.

She gave his hand a small squeeze. "You might get in trouble." she told him, her sky blue eyes glassy. She bit her lip, she didn't want to get him in trouble, but then again... he was hers first. She sighed a little and kissed his cheek. "Alright."

He smiled at her back and kissed her once on the lips quickly and gently. "Thank you," he said glad that she was accepting him for doing this. He sighed, glad to have that off his shoulders, and out in the open.
