"Suit yerself" Skittery shrugged and pocketed the money again, not like he ever wanted to give it away in the first place.
The pain returned to his chin when Sweets reminded him about it. He pulled his pink sleeve over his hand and began to blot the wound. Once he was satisfied he simply pushed the sleeve back up. "It'll be alright.." he obviously didnt care about sanitation, "maybe i'll even get some sympathy customers..." he narrowed his eye slightly at Sweets, noticing the smile that she was fighting against. "you know, it aint funny...." He added in a quiet bitter tone.

She shrugged. "From ovah heah it sorta is," she said good naturedly, though she doubted he was capable of taking it lightly. "I don't believe we've met, I'm Sweets," she said, holding out he hand to him, her grin finally fading.

He stared at her blank faced. No. It was not amusing from any angle. Her hand was extended towards him and he made no move, rather he looked at it awkwardly for a minute then shrugged, spit in his own, and grasped hers. "Skittery." A minute later he finally added a very unenthusiastic "nice to meet you"

"Well gee, you too," she said sarcastically. Turning to walk away, she stopped, turning back to face him again. "I was just jokin' before ya know, I'm sorry ya havin' such a bad day," she said sincerely, then adding, "Lighten up a bit, huh?" with that she turned again, walking back toward her spot.

Skittery let out a groan and slumped his shoulders. He had such a way with first impressions. He tucked his mangled papers under his arm and rushed to catch up with Sweets. He came up to her side. "Hey" he rushed to get his words out, "I didn;t mean it like that!" He cut her off in hopes of making her stop. "I was just angry because if it wasnt for youse sellin here it wouldnt of happe--" He hit himself in the forhead knowing if came out wrong "I mean I just got all caught up and wanted to be better than..." He let out a sigh and settled for the most basic of explinations, "I'm just a jerk sometimes."

She grinned slightly still looking ahead. "Well ya shore got a way with words."
Stopping she turned to face him. "Are ya tryin' to apologize?" she asked, cocking her head to the side. "cause if ya are, there's no need. I'm new 'round heah, I didn't know this was your sellin' spot. I can go find another one," she said, shrugging, then adding, "and you're not a jerk... well not completely..." she smirked before shifting her papes again, ready to head off to a new area.

He stood there stupidly not quite knowing how to respond. "but it aint my spot.." He said then added "I jus' wanted to take it from you because well...i dunno" He shrugged knowing that he sounded rather dumb.
In an effort to redeem himself he gave her a weak smile. "You keep it, i ain't sellin' anymore today. Look at these - worthless" He held up the papers that were crumples and creased from his fall.

She raised an eyebrow at him, wanted to take it from you?
Ignoring that part of what he said, she frowned at his papers. "You sure? I can bum ya a few papes if you want..."

He shook his head "I don't like debts an' besides I got enough to hold me over till tommarow" He poked at his chin a bit, feeling the rough beginnings of a scab. His mood was lifting - they always seemed to come and go rather quickly and apologizing (or at least his odd version) to Sweets was thereputic. He gave her a more guniune smile "I'll sell some, you keep the cash though. Help ya get done quicker that way..."

She grinned broadly at his kind offer. "Sure," she said, handing him a small stack, "Thanks."
As she turned to walk away so they were separated a bit, she looked back. "ya know you really should clean that... It'll hurt less that way," she said seriously, motioning to his chin.

He took the papers and began to glance over the headlines again - this time he would stay a little more focus.
He looked up when she spoke of his chin and scoffed. "It don't hurt!" he lied " An' besides I already am clean enough. It aint deep or nuthin'." To him being clean was having the opportunity to bath at least once every 5 days, regardless of any cuts or scraps.

She nodded. "Right, o'course," she said in mock-seriousness, she didn't dare grin until her back was safely to him and wandered away through the crowd, looking for a good spot.

Skittery didn't catch onto her sarcasm but instead concentrated on finding a good headline.
Rather than yelling headlines he filtered into the crowd and acosted people. Being sly he would sell a paper and occasionally pass the customer one of his ratty papes instead and vanish before bieng caught.
The crowd was hectic and he was being pushed around a lot so after awhile and faught his way out and took a seat on the curb. His stack was significantly smaller, a few nice papers on top and more of his cuddy ones on bottom.

After she finished selling her remaining papers, Sweets walked through the crowd, back to where they started from. Seeing Skittery sitting alone on the curb, she went over and sat down beside him.
"So how'd ya do?" she asked conversationally, watching two girls in gorgeous dresses pass by. They looked down on the two newsies disgustedly, amazed that people actually sat on the ground.

Skittery's eyes followed the girls as they passed. "Wanna buy a pape miss?" He questioned to one. She sneared back but did not speak. Skittery said "Priss!" loudly but if they noticed they choose to ignore, he sighed and turned back to Sweets.
" You done? I did alright I guess." He counted what he had left, "seven, five of 'em are mine." He reached into his pant pocket and held his change filled palm out to her. "Deals a deal - its yours" He pushed up the bill of his hat so his messy hair stuck out.
