“You come here often?”
Hannalee looked up, a little surprised the boy chose to talk to her. Though she wasn't shy, for some reason, most people didn't just strike up conversation with her. The fifteen year old girl smiled slightly and shrugged, shaking her head.
"Not that often, there's so many places in New York that I haven't been to any particular place that often. I like Queens though, and I thought it would be a little cooler down here, this heat is awful."
She gave him another smile and brushed some blonde runaway locks out of her face, smiling as her hair was dancing in the breeze. "Ugh, you're lucky you don't have long hair, sometimes it has a mind of its own."

"Not that often, there's so many places in New York that I haven't been to any particular place that often…”
Styx opened his eyes and looked over at the girl, nodding in understanding as he took another drag.
I like Queens though, and I thought it would be a little cooler down here, this heat is awful."
Styx chuckled, remembering the headline he’d made up to sell his last papers. “Ha! Yeah the heat’s a killer… So, where you from, if not Queens?”
"Ugh, you're lucky you don't have long hair, sometimes it has a mind of its own."
“Well, you hair’s just an inch or so longer than mine, gersha,” he pointed out. “But I’ve gotta agree with you, it’s nice not havin to do anything with it in the morning.” He gave her a lopsided grin, being careful not to go over the top.

“Ha! Yeah the heat’s a killer… So, where you from, if not Queens?”
Hannalee glanced at him and then back to the water, running her fingers over the little money pouch she had, its fabric still slightly soft even though it was a little faded.
"I'm from the Bronx, atleast for a month now, I don't really know where I was born, wether being Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, I just know I've always lived in the city. I take it you're from Queens?"
“Well, you hair’s just an inch or so longer than mine, gersha, I’ve gotta agree with you, it’s nice not havin to do anything with it in the morning.
"That's true," Hannalee paused and thought a moment, before saying thoughtfully, a smile growing on her face, "I feel bad for Rapunzel, she would be having a horrible time in this wind." She laughed softly and smiled back at the boy.

"I'm from the Bronx, at least for a month now, I don't really know where I was born, wither being Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, I just know I've always lived in the city. I take it you're from Queens?"
“Yup, I’m a Queens newsie alright!” Styx grinned. “But me sister and I are really from Ireland and Holland. Ya know where that is?” Not many newsies did, but this girl looked smart enough, maybe she’d be different.
"I feel bad for Rapunzel, she would be having a horrible time in this wind."
“Aha! Bet she would! Lucky for us we ain’t her then,” he winked. “I’m Styx, by the way.” He switched his cigarette to his left hand and spit in his right, holding it out to the girl. “Youse a newsie, too, yeah?”

“Yup, I’m a Queens newsie alright! But me sister and I are really from Ireland and Holland. Ya know where that is?”
Hannalee nodded and smiled. "Yep, I do know where they are, in Europe, somewhere somewhat near France. I got held up at the library one rainy day, flipped through the atlas all day long."
“Aha! Bet she would! Lucky for us we ain’t her then. I’m Styx, by the way."
Hannalee couldn't help but grin brightly as he winked at her, but she wasn't the blushing swooning type. The world didn't freeze in wonderful harmony whenever a boy smiled in her direction.
She spit in her own hand and placed it in his, shaking his hand. "Hannalee Isle Elis, but you can call me Hanna, or Lee, or really whatever you want."

“Sounds kinda boring to me,” Styx laughed. He had never enjoyed school and didn’t intend to ever do “book learning” again.
"Hannalee Isle Elis, but you can call me Hanna, or Lee, or really whatever you want."
“Hey that’s a pretty cool name!” He grinned, “Kinda like Ellis Island, or somethin’.” He wiped his hand off on his pants and then stood up, stretching. “Well, it was nice meetin ya, Miss. Hannalee, but I’m afraid I have to be off. I gotta make sure my sister get’s back to Queens before dark. She gets in almost as much trouble as I do,” he laughed.

((New Day For Steve))
Buttons walked quietly down the shore, her stuffed bear hanging by her side. "It's nice out today huh Tubby?" She asked the bear as she ran over towards some rocks to climb on. To her this was a great new adventure, smiling she stood on the rock looking at the ocean her light green dress rustled in the wind a bit as she pushed her golden locks out of her face which only cause her to have a streak of dirt going across her cheek. "Look at the ocean Tubby." She said bringing the bear up to let it look at the water.

Steve found himself wandering again, just walking, taking in the sights, though they didn't amaze him or make him happy, more like he had too much time on his hands and too much time to think about the past. He never would admit it, but things were so lonely when you were all by yourself. He had always been by himself, just lately, things seemed even more so quiet. Steve wasn't the type to go hunting for action either though.
He came up along the shore and stared out at the big rocks and the waves, pretty calm today, but still in an endless motion. He remembered a flicker show he had seen one time, when a famous couple had spent a whole time arguing, the words coming across the bottom of the projector screen. Then by the end they end up kissing and live happily by the sea. Yeah right. If there were something such as true love, his old man would have never left and his mother would never leave her six year old son for another man.
He stopped when he saw a little girl standing on one of the rocks, clutching a stuffed bear to her chest, telling it to look at the ocean. A small smile spread across his face. He wasn't really the nicest guy, but he didn't mind little kids. He thought maybe if it was anybody he got along with kids the best. They didn't care about stupid things adults or teenagers cared about. They just liked you and were innocent and honest. The wind wasn't at its strongest, but still enough to knock a little girl off her course. Steve came up slowly so as not to startle her and said softly, no hint of sterness in his voice, "Be careful not to fall, these rocks can be kinda slippery sometimes."
He gave her a small smile, putting his thumbs through his belt loops, a usual habit of his, and stared out at the water.
"I'm sure your beary there likes the view, huh?" He asked, that small smile still playing on his lips.

The little girl smiled happily as she watched the waves crash on the sand and then pull back into it's self just to crash back this time coming closer to the rocks she was standing on.
"Be careful not to fall, these rocks can be kinda slippery sometimes."
She gasped a bit in surprise and turned her head to look at the boy she hadn't heard walk up. She blushed a bit and buried her face in Tubbys head, peeking out over his ear at the boy, Buttons was extremely shy. "I'll be careful." She said quietly to him which was slightly muffled by the bear and gave him a nod.
"I'm sure your beary there likes the view, huh?"
She nodded again bringing her head away from Tubby so she could answer. "He likes the water, but he doesn't like the sand.. it gets caught in his fur." She said just as quietly as before and clutched the bear closer to her.

"I'll be careful."
Steve smiled and nodded, as the girl peered at him behind her bear. She obviously really loved that thing.
"Mind if I come up there by you? The view looks pretty spectacular. I know you already got your bear for company, but you won't even know I'm there. S' okay?"
He crawled up slowly and eased himself into a sitting position, giving the girl another small smile and then looked out at the water again. She was very small, and had a small voice to match. She was shy, but rightfully so. Little kids all alone in the city had the right to be timid. The city could be a dangerous place to live.
"He likes the water, but he doesn't like the sand.. it gets caught in his fur."
Steve chuckled softly. He watched the girl as she looked at the waves, she seemed to really like them. They did have a calming effect. Steve sighed softly, closing his eyes and just breathing in some salty air. He peered an eye open and asked curiously. "You got a name, little miss?"

"Mind if I come up there by you? The view looks pretty spectacular. I know you already got your bear for company, but you won't even know I'm there. S' okay?"
She shook her head her blond curls bouncing as she did, "No I don't mind." She said as she smiled at him with a missing front tooth. She looked at the boy from where she was standing on the rock as he sat down and hugged Tubby closer not wanting to drop him in the sand, he hated that. Looking out over the waves again she giggled a bit as she carefully jumped to the rock in front of them and knelt down pointing. "Look a starfish." She said excitedly she was starting to come out of her shyness a little, but not to much.
"You got a name, little miss?"
Buttons looked up and blinked at him. "My names Clara, but everyone just calls me Buttons," She held out the bear for his own introduction. "And this is Tubby. What's your name?" She asked as she played with a button on her small dark gray coat.

"No I don't mind."
Steve smiled back at the little girl, happy to see her smile. She was a really cute little one, with blonde curly hair and blue eyes. He listened to her giggle and watched her jump to the next rock and heard her excitement about a starfish. She was still shy, but coming out of her shell a little.
"My names Clara, but everyone just calls me Buttons, And this is Tubby. What's your name?"
He smiled again and nodded, his thumbs still in his belt loops, his dark black hair blowing slightly in the wind. He didn't wear any suspenders, but gray trousers and a jacket over his light blue shirt. "Clara's a pretty name, but I think Buttons suits ya better. Nice ta meet ya Buttons, Tubby." He shook her hand, and then the teddy bear's stuffed arm as well.
"I'm Steve," He said simply, wondering why he had never gotten a more interesting name than Steve. Well, it was better than Steven, he thought with a small grunt.

"Clara's a pretty name, but I think Buttons suits ya better. Nice ta meet ya Buttons, Tubby."
"Nice ta meet ya too." She said mimicking his accent with a childish laugh and brought Tubby up to her ear to listen as if he was saying something. "Tubby likes you, he thinks your nice."
"I'm Steve,"
"Steve," She said showing off her missing tooth again as she giggled and jumped back onto the rock he was on carefully. "I like that name, but you don't look like a Steve." She said as she brought Tubby to her ear again. "Tubby says you look more like a Robert or a Louis."

"Nice ta meet ya too. Tubby likes you, he thinks your nice."
Steve smiled, feeling his blue eyes soften as much as they had in a long long time. It wasn't often he had anybody call him nice, or that he was liked. It surprised him a little, so he just smiled and thanked her quietly, "Why thankya, I think I like Tubby too." He said with a wink, implying that his statement was more so towards Buttons.
"Steve,"
He seemed to brace himself a little every time she jumped, a subconscious protective feeling of not wanting to let her fall. But she landed safely, and again he relaxed. The sound of her giggle just made him smile, how did such a little girl have the ability to do so? He shook his head in wonder, still smiling.
"I like that name, but you don't look like a Steve. Tubby says you look more like a Robert or a Louis."
Steve laughed and gave her a joking look, "Well maybe you don't look like a Clara, but you're a Clara and I'm a Steve," He cleared his throat and willed himself to say, "Actually Steven, but I've clenched my teeth against that name for years. Steve s' what I'm called, never gained any other interesting name, no Sparky or Fluffy or other nickname like that. Just plain ol' Steve."

"Why thankya, I think I like Tubby too."
Buttons laughed and looked behind her at the ocean. "It's real pretty here isn't it?" She asked quietly as she hugged Tubby to her chest again so she wouldn't drop him. Looking down she sat next to him on the rock her short legs out in front of her showing off her black stocking and scuffed up shoes.
"Well maybe you don't look like a Clara, but you're a Clara and I'm a Steve, Actually Steven, but I've clenched my teeth against that name for years. Steve s' what I'm called, never gained any other interesting name, no Sparky or Fluffy or other nickname like that. Just plain ol' Steve."
"I could think of one for you if ya want," She offered as she looked back up at him with her big blue eyes. "It'll take me a bit though." She wanted to get to know him better. If she learned more about him it would help her with making one up.
