Cheater stared thoughtfully at the ice cream cone in her hand. Already she could feel a brain freeze coming on, having devoured the ice cream only seconds after getting it as if it would vanish into thin air once she sat down. She closed her eyes briefly, as if that would alleviate the growing pressure between her eyes, but any attempts to rid herself of the uncomfortable feeling was in vain.
Not that it mattered. She smiled to herself before taking a small bite of the cone. It had been a treat for herself, a way of saying hey, you worked hard, so here's a reward. Cheater chewed slowly, savoring the taste. One couldn't reward herself all the time, of course, and so there was no sense in rushing everything (nevermind the fact that the best part of her reward was already gone).
She looked up from the treat, observing those around her, looking for potential customers. Her newspapers sat beside her, the individual pages fluttering in the light breeze. Perhaps if she finished quickly she could sell the remaining papers, but considering how slow the news was she doubted it.

"Oi! Cheat!" Dodger hadn't been looking for Cheater, actually he'd been looking for Reid to ask him who the girl was that kept sneaking into the lodging house at night. But he sighed and dropped his hand onto her head and gave her a smirk, at least some of his kids were still around and being themselves. "What have you been up too?"

Cheater looked up at the sound of her name, and waved. She hadn't seen the leader in a while, and while that meant that he was probably doing his job as leader, she had to admit that she missed him. To answer his question, she held up a finger to signal that she would answer in just a moment, and swallowed the remainder of the cone that she had been chewing on upon Dodger's arrival.
"Just working," she replied after a bit, giving him a small smile. "I haven't seen you in a while... how're you doing?"

Dodger ran his hands threw his hair as she dropped down beside her, producing an apple from his jacket as he smirked a bit. How did he tell Cheat all that she'd missed, he sighed a bit. "Just bein' the leader, love. That's how it is. Been busy, between me an' River running around cleaning up messes. Have to go to Brooklyn and meet with Spot
That's what being the leader was all about in essence, busy and trying to keep things together. Losing Perry had been hard and Reid and Lexi. It had been hard on the rest of them too. With a sigh he draped an arm over her shoulders and smirked a little bit. "You doin' good, kiddo?" He'd always been fond of Cheater, who wouldn't be? She was energetic and friendly and well.. Cheater.

Cheater gave Dodger a sympathetic smile. She wasn't sure what to say to him that might be both sympathetic while at the same time not brushing him off (not like "I'm sorry"), and thought it might be best if she just kept quiet. "Everything'll be okay soon, I'll bet," she said after a long pause. "Everything usually is."
Dodger's question received a shrug. "I'm not doing bad. Just busy..." Cheater grinned. "One've the waitresses got pregnant an' I had to take up a lot've her tables..." She trailed off again, realizing how boring her news might seem to Dodger, and looked down at her hands, suddenly embarrassed.

((New Day))
Humming to herself, Rori bounced down the beach to the picnic table a warm pretzil in her hand as she found a place to sit. She had been telling stories again, found a spot and people had gathered around to hear her tale of death and chaos, of lost love and hopeful dreams. Though her favorite stories had sad endings she was kind of hoping that her more recent adventure was just the start of many more adventures to come.
Reid had gone back to the lodging house and she wanted to but she had changed her mind half way and headed off to where her house had been. Glancing up at the apartment building before she had ran into Emma who was being as she usually was-- hard to handle. They'd talked for awhile, Emma giving her the heads up that Danny was back in town. That had been something, she'd sent word for him to meet here.
Eating her pretzil she decided she would share if he got there in time as she waited, tilting her head to the side. She wanted to tell him she'd seen Boxcar, Connor, her brother, and that he'd said hey. But she'd also wanted to see her childhood friend.
A part of her wished that Reid would show up too, but she wasn't sure if he was even around. She kind of missed him, but was giving him time. After all, they'd been gone for awhile, just them... she'd loved riding the rails with him. Had missed it, and was starting to feel like she was more like her brothers then she ever thought she was.

If there was anything Danny had missed concerning the woman, it was her stories. He'd heard some tales in his time, for sure, but at the same time there weren't many who could weave a tale like Rori, and he'd spent a lot of time curled up at her side and listening to her spin her words. It was something he'd missed immediately, and had continued to miss over the months. But they were both back again, and Danny would be a frequent appearance in the Bronx once again if it meant more stories.
But walking through the familiar borough brought it's own share of sorrows, and he smiled through it all as he caught sight of people he'd once known, zipping around and paying him absolutely no attention. It had been that way in Manhattan too, and he was once more glad for it. It would have been nice to say hi but he had someone to see and when the ground underneath his feet turned to sand he looked around and spotted her, sitting a good ways away at the picnic table that had been there since he could remember.
He'd dressed easy again, just a pair of pants and a long sleeved shirt, his hair flying free about his face without a hat there to keep it from getting in his eyes. But he didn't care, couldn't care, because with each step he took closer his smile widened. Until it threatened to cover his entire face. "You better be planning to save some of that for me." He called out, having caught sight of the pretzel in her hand when she'd moved to take a bite of it.

She was half way to the pretzel when she heard a familiar voice and a smile crossed her face, as she lifted her head and pulled part of the pretzel away from her mouth and ripped off a piece holding it out to him before she stood on the sitting part of the table and threw her arms around him once he got close enough. "Connor says hey. He's in Colorado, got a job on a ranch. You know how much he always wanted to see where the wild things roam, told me to tell you that there is nothing like the big wide open sky."
Pulling back she took a bit of her pretzel and grinned at him, tilting her head as she smiled. "So, tell me your story Danny? Where has Ace Cardoni been?" She wanted to hear, truth was she loved a story as much as she liked to tell them.

Danny couldn't help the laugh that escaped when he saw her stand up, and he gave her a good hug once he was close enough, yanking the piece of pretzel away with a grin. He might own a restaurant now, and they were fucking spectacular, but nothing could really beat these pretzels, and he was grinning even as he nudged her down and took a spot next to her, stretching out his legs. "I'll have to go out and see him sometime." And it wasn't really an idle comment. He really would go out and see him, if he could find the time, the money, and someone to go with him. He'd have suggested Lucky before, a trip with just the two of them but. Well. He was foolish, and that was about the end of that.
"Oh you don't want to know that." He snorted, though he'd expected it just the same, his chin resting in one hand as he looked over at her. "Red took me away for a while. We both had a lot of things on our mind and we needed the time to sort through it all." He really didn't blame Collin for things, should but didn't, mostly because he laid on the blame on his idiotic timing and moronic tendencies to get himself into the worst possible trouble at any given moment. But this time it hit close to home, and he gave her a sideways look that didn't quite hide what he was about to say to her. "I went back to Boston." And the way he said it, it was like they were just discussing the weather.

She smiled at him, running a hand through her hair as she watched him talk, the snort and the way his eyes changed had her turning to look at him, sitting on the table instead of the seat so she could see him better. Something about the set of his shoulders had her setting her hand on his shoulder.
"Sounds like there is more of a story there then you want to let on huh?" She was a good listener too, sure Rori was the run around and have fun type, believed in true love and magic still even at her age. But there were some things all the imagination in the world couldn't change. Reality sometimes invaded your thoughts. "... you okay, Ace?"

"Always is." Danny grinned at her, and the look in his eyes receded a little bit. "You know that." The only one he actually told everything to was Lucky, especially where it concerned his family and his past, but Rori knew her fair share, as did Connor. But that was only natural that they'd know. Connor because of who he had been, who he was, to Danny, and Rori because she was one of the best listeners he'd ever had the privilege of being around. He attributed it to her being a story teller, quite honestly. One couldn't tell such wonderful tales, and capture people's attention, without knowing first how to give their own.
But was he okay? "Yeah." Honestly, he was more bent out of shape concerning Lucky than he'd been going back to his childhood home. And that was saying something. "No broken bones, no running into my brother. I think I did good this time." He grinned at her before leaning in, taking a look around like Leone was going to jump out of the sand at him or something. "Collin and I broke into the house, actually." And he nearly laughed when he said it. Collin - Red - Had always been a thief, had always been quick and talented like that, if talent was what you wanted to call it. Whatever it was, it came from living in Brooklyn for so long, and stealing his food when the papers bored him to tears. He'd been a rather interesting newsie when he was young.
But Danny? Ace? Not really much of a thief. Bronx living didn't quite attribute to that. Though he'd managed not to get them both killed or permanently put in jail, so, hey. Progress.

She listened, rubbing his back like her mother would have when she'd been alive. Rori had that in her, but she was a good listener and a good sister to boot. When her wanderlust didn't get in the way the Bronx native had a habit of sitting around and telling whatever story came to mind. Right now she was listening to her old leader and her brother's friend talk about what was on his mind. "I can see that in Red, but you?" She shook her head with a rueful smile, almost sad she missed that adventure. She loved to get into trouble when she could manage though she like just as much to be able to get out of it.
"At least you didn't run into to much trouble going home." She was quiet for a time, tilting her head at him before she leaned forward. "But what's really got your face looking like someone kicked you in the stomach?" Her brow raised as she tore a part of her pretzel and shoved it in her mouth, smirking a little bit as she chewed, looking down at her shoes. "And don't lie, if you don't tell me I'll find out somehow.."

"And I bet I'd help her," Avalanche said as he rounded the corner. "What, you two come home and not even so much as a knock on my door? Yeesh... no love for the people who never disappear," he said as he shook his head and leaned against the wall of the building. It had been far too long since Avalanche had seen his friends, and it was high time he came and found them.
"Ooo! Preztel," he said as he tore a piece off of Rori's food. "How are my two favorite Bronxlings?" he asked with a knowing smile and his mouth full. He was in a very good mood, and he was so glad that he'd gone on his stroll for the day and run into these two!

It was comforting, and something he'd missed. Rori had a good way of mothering those around her when the situation called for it, and even though Danny didn't need it, he appreciated it just the same. "Yeah. Trust me I wasn't so sure I wouldn't get us killed." He grinned a bit, nose scrunched up. "But we got out of there all right, so." He shrugged, failing to mention what they'd went in there for, though she'd figure it out on her own when she found out he owned a restaurant and Collin owned the pub. They'd be in so much trouble if anyone ever found out, but at the same time, Danny was entitled to the money they'd taken, the things in his own room he'd nicked and sold on the way back. It was his right and he didn't bother worrying about it. Besides. They hadn't taken that much. Just enough to get them moving.
Despite her words, his lips twitched into a rueful smile. "Rori..." But before he could even think of what to say, the truth or a lie, Avalanche was there and he straightened up in surprise, a genuine smile on his face. "Av!" He didn't even hesitate in swinging around on the bench, getting to his feet and pulling the other into a hug. "Oh, man. I'm sorry." He hadn't forgotten, but he'd been rather busy as of late, and very much withdrawn. "How have you been?" And he wasn't consciously trying to change the subject, he was genuinely curious.
