Jewel then nodded quickly, and agreed with what Devan was saying.
"Well, in someways, I would never want to leave the circus. But on the other hand, I would sooner or later like to stay in one place. So, I kinda don't blame your parents for wanting you to stay here in New York." She said.
Jewel's smile faded "I'm sure I will love the Bronx once I adjust. But I will be damned if I let any of the other newsies bring me down." She said.
Jewel's facial expression suddenly softened as she heard Devan say that her family was in New Orleans.
"Oh wow, New Orleans? I went there one time. It was beautiful. Some of the kids from Philadelphia and I took a trip there when we were 12. It was great with all the Bars, lights. Hotels. Just plain beautiful. I hope I get to meet everyone in your family sooner or later." She said.

"I don't blame them either," She was still a bit upset with their decision but that was just because she'd been forced to leave everyone behind, even Ki. She missed him the most. Missed their conversation and joking around, she even missed him using her as weight and working out with her.
Devan gave her a bright smile, "That's good. Are they nice there?" She wondered what the other newsies were like. She'd met one from Queens, but that was the extent of her knowledge on newsies.
"It is beautiful, but if that's all you saw you missed the real beauty." Devan smiled widely and took another bite of her sandwich making sure to swallow before she began talking. "Did you hear all the stories when you were down there about voodoo?" Devan had made it her mission in life the last time they were down there to find out everything she could about New Orleans culture, it was positively fascinating. "Well, New York is one of the cities they plan on visiting soon so I'm sure you'll be able to meet them then."

Jewel sighed "I guess your family cares a lot for you, otherwise they wouldn't want you to expand your mind, and meet new people." she said.
She felt herself ready to cry again, she alway got emotional when talking about family, either hers or someone else's. "I wish my family cared enough about me... my parents died, and then my older sister abandoned me." she muttered audibly to Devan.
She then sniffed a little bit, and reached for a napkin to wipe her eyes with before she seriously broke down in front of another potential friend.
"I don't understand what's been going on with everyone lately. It's like half of the newsies in New York are against me. I don't know how much longer I can keep this up, runnin' like this. I have to go back to The Bronx sometime. I just don't know what will be waiting for me when I get back." Jewel cried.
Jewel then brightened up a little bit again when Devan started talking about what she missed in New Orleans.
"No, I didn't miss the'beauty' of it. I happened to have seen most of it. At one point, one of the Philadelphia newsboys and I sat atop of the roof of one of the hotels, and we got a beautiful view....it was at night. We were watching the lights, and the people. The atmosphere of it all was so romantic...even for a girl of only 12 back then. The boy I was with...he gave me my first kiss that night." She told Devan, her smile widening at the memory.
Then Jewel heard Devan ask her about Voodoo, it was a subject that Jewel wasn't entirely familiar with, but she told Devan what she did know. "Well, the guy I got the kiss from who took me and the other 3 newsies there happened to have been born in Louisiana, so he told us something about a witch doctor he used to hear stories from when he was younger about Voodoo and all. The boy was kind of obsessed with the idea of it. So, he used to talk about it all the time." she explained.
Jewel then smiled some more when Devan mentioned about how her family would be coming to New York soon. "Oh, that'll be lovely. I'm sure you can't wait for that. I can't wait to meet them...I just hope I'm here when they come to visit." she said.

Devan smiled and nodded her head, she knew her family loved her and she loved them just as much which is why she was feeling so blue from missing them. When Jewel started to tear up, Devan froze, she wasn't used to people she just met crying in front of her and she wasn't sure what to do. She'd never had many female friends and the ones she did have worked with her and they all tended to have a tough skin and rarely if ever cried in front of one another so she had no idea how to console the girl. It actually made her a bit uncomfortable so she shifted in her seat and averted her gaze, trying to give the girl some privacy to pull herself together.
"Why would half of the newsies in New York want to hurt you? And what could be waiting for you at your home?" Devan had no idea how the inner workings of newsies went so she was a little lost when it came to all of this. She didn't understand how some small slip of a girl could anger so many people and make them want to actually kill her or something equally horrible.
Devan smiled as Jewel related her tale of her time in New Orleans. She was a little astonished she'd received her first kiss when she was only twelve, but then maybe Devan was a little old to still be so innocent in those matters. She'd never been kissed, though not for a lack of trying by others. She'd just had no interest in it then, plus if anyone got to close Ki tended to pop up unexpectedly. Well, she couldn't expect him to do that when he was so far away.
"Oh, it's very interesting," Devan nodded her head at Jewel's story of the witch doctor. Her aunt was a gypsy so voodoo hadn't really been much of a stretch for her. When she'd been in New Orleans last she'd snuck off one night after a show and had talked to a woman about it. It had all captured her attention, much to her parents dismay. "You'll have to come to a show if you are. Then I can show you what I do." Devan was proud of her job in the circus. It took years of practice and training to be able to accomplish the things Devan could do.

Jewel sighed and pulled herself together quickly. She didn't want Devan thinking anything bad about her.
"I'm sorry for doing that just now...I just get a little emotional sometimes is all. I didn't meant to almost cry in front of you. I seem to be doing that a lot lately." She said.
Jewel's eyes widened a little in fear when Devan asked her about why the newsies wanted to harm her at all.
"I don't know... I made-up a small smoke screen about one of the guys I was crazy about, and it got thrown completely out of proportion. It was bad at first... I was almost throttled by a girl in the Bronx, and I got a table centerpiece hurled at me in a coffee shop in Queens. Also, honestly, Devan. I think the only thing waiting for me in the Bronx will be a one-way ticket out of the place. It's possibly already gotten back to my leader Lexi, and I could be in some big trouble." she explained.
Jewel saw Devan smile when she related her tale about her and the boy who kissed her "Yeah, see? I've never told anyone that story before. But he was so good to me. I would love to see him again. I wonder what he would be like now-a-days. His name was Jacob, and he was the most gentle guy I had ever met. When I came back here to New York, he never knew I left." She told her.
Jewel then shook her head out of her thought, and chuckled a bit "Sorry...lost myself there. So, anyway...yeah, it's very beautiful in New Orleans. Oh and trust me, If I'm ever in town for one of your shows...I will definitely love to come and see what you do." she said.

Devan nodded her head a bit at Jewel's statement of just feeling over emotional. She couldn't even imagine how she'd feel if she felt like half of the city was out to get her, but she still wasn't comfortable offering some sort of comfort to a girl she'd just met. Instead she lifted her sandwich and took another bite as Jewel continued to talk. "I'm sure that's not the case," She said softly although she truly had no idea what would happen when Jewel went back to the Bronx. "I mean, they aren't the ones who want to hurt you right?"
"Why didn't you tell him?" She asked quietly, unsure if it was her place to ask a question like that but Jewel seemed pretty open and friendly. If Devan had had someone like that in the circus with her she would have made sure she at least said good-bye.

Jewel buried her head in her hands, and sighed heavily.
"I just hope they will be more than willing to take me back in the Bronx. I did nothing to hurt them...except for the rude welcome I got from that one girl. But I can't let one person bring me down." she said.
When asked about Jacob, and why she didn't say Good-Bye "Oh Devan, I screwed up. I was too scared to say good-bye to him. But, if anything...If He had even asked me ...I would've bought him here with me to be a newsie. I know Jacob like a book, and I know that he wouldn't let anyone hurt me." she explained.
Jewel then began to search through the pockets of her jacket for the money to cover the bill. But her eyes widened when she found out that it was empty. Turning away from Devan, she looked worried suddenly "Oh Shit...shit...shit." she muttered. Finally, her worst fear was realized, she had lost the rest of the money she had made from selling, probably while she was running across the bridge like a bat out of hell to get there.
"Oh God! Shit...I can't believe that this happened to me." she muttered.

"Maybe everything will be fine, but you'll never know til you go back." Devan offered the girl a pleasant smile and finished her sandwich. Devan was by no means a fighter but she wasn't someone who would back down from a confrontation either. She thought it was better to face things head on then to worry about the what ifs. Besides she always figured it would be easier to put it behind you once you dealt with it.
"You should write to him, then!" She exclaimed, happily. Jewel hadn't really given her a reason why she had left him and if he was as wonderful as he sounded Devan felt she should keep in touch. "No harm ever came from a letter," She said with a wink.
Devan watched her curiously when she began to freak out. "What is it?" The girl had been perfectly fine a moment ago and now she was cursing. Devan was really starting to regret sitting with her if these were the way her emotions were. She seemed like a nice enough girl just a little on the crazy side and crazy was not something Devan needed right now.

Jewel nodded "I guess you're right, Devan. I mean, if I go back...maybe it won't be so bad. After all, I couldn't have done anything that bad that they would drive me out of there after only a couple of days. I think that once I get back though, I'm gonna need to apologize to a few people." She said.
Jewel smiled brightly "Wow, why didn't I think of that? Oh lord, I gotta see how he is... Maybe even try to get him down to visit. Oh Devan, If you ever get to meet him if he comes here...you will love him. He is just the most loveliest guy you will ever meet." She said.
Jewel looked up at Devan, and quickly retracted her last outburst. She had a feeling she had freaked her out a bit with her foul mouth "Oh, my God! Devan! I'm so sorry to curse in front of you. I uh seem to have lost the money I made from sellin' papes. I was gonna pay for the Dinner I had ordered here. But I seem to have lost all of it. Wow.. Could this day get any worse?" She asked her.

"That sounds like a good idea," And it was exactly what Devan would do in a situation like that. If she thought someone might be angry with her she would rather talk it then let it fester, that's how people tended to blow up. She knew that's how she usually ended up going on one of her tirades. "Oh, I'm sure he's lovely."
Devan frowned when Jewel said she'd lost her money, she wished she could help her out but she had brought just enough to pay for her own food. She'd had more when she'd left her hotel but then she'd seen a small boy begging for money and she'd immediately given him everything she'd had except for the change in her pocket. Devan thought about the possibilities for how this could go before she smiled. "Maybe you could just wash some dishes or something to pay for your food." She'd had to do that once when she was younger and had lost her money.

Jewel's eyes widened at the idea of washing dishes. "Oh Lord, I hope not. The bill is only for 50 cents. Now, I had that much plus a bit more on me earlier. I wonder where it went?" she sighed, searching her extra pockets.
Just then she checked the pockets in her skirt. She then felt some change, and gave a sheepish look to Devan "Oh God...I feel like an fool. It was in my skirt pocket the whole time. Good, now I can pay this bill, and head back to The Bronx before they start wondering where I've been all day." she sighed, putting the money down on the table.
Meanwhile, she looked up at Devan again to speak "Oh yeah, definitely. I'm gonna ask Jacob if he could come and visit me here. I will tell him where I am. Or if he lets me know that he can come...then maybe we can see if we can rekindle things...who knows? Stranger things have happened, right?" she asked.
"So, What are you gonna do for the rest of the day, Devan?" Jewel asked with a smile.

Devan wondered how this girl survived on the streets if the thought of washing dishes was so horrifying to her. Devan had grown up around animals so she knew for a fact that there were plenty of jobs that were more unsavory then cleaning a few dishes. She would have begged to do that rather then clean up the cages. Since her father was the lion tamer, she spent plenty of time cleaning cages. She mentally shuddered at the memory, knowing that there were few things more disgusting then that.
Devan merely smiled as Jewel said she was going to head back to the Bronx and that she'd probably write her friend. It reminded Devan that she still hadn't sent the letter to her parents to let them know where she was staying. "Oh, probably just walk around a bit and then head back to the hotel." Devan smiled as she spoke, she wasn't really sure what there was to do in New York still but she'd found herself wondering the streets studying the inhabitants of the city. It was a wonderful way to pass time.

Jewel smiled sweetly at Devan "Well, have a good time. I gotta head back. The Bronx calls, ya know? I hope we can see each other again some day." she said.
"Maybe if I get Jacob to visit... I can bring him to meet you and vice versa... Sound good to you?" she asked.
"Remember, Devan. Now that I know where you are sometimes...Ill be able to find you." Jewel said with a chuckle.
She then stood up, and shook out her hand to Devan "It's been so nice talking with you. You are the nicest person I've ever met. I hope you see your family soon too. Ciao, sweetie." Jewel sighed, heading for the door.
((OOC: Hmmm... Do we end this here?))

[[ New Day ]]
The book he'd been given by one of the Manhattan girls for Christmas touched his soul, really in a way there wasn't anything that made Bumlets happier then having a new book to read and more so when it was a book of philosophy written by the greats. Being a newsie he was sure that most didn't think he was smart at all, being a newsie denoted a lot of stereotypes and Bumlets was one of the ones that had more than his fair share. He was not white, he wasn't of wealth and at the base of it-- he was a street kid who was hinging on being a man.
Leaning back in the booth he turned the page and raised a brow as he heard someone approach, thinking it was the waitress he was about to ask for more water before he raised a brow. "Can I help you?"

"Hiya, Bumlets," Dutchy gave a small shrug, a nervous looking smile on his face. Five months away was a pretty long time to be gone. Especially with little explanation as to why he was leaving. The warehouse fight that was a year old now and getting picked up for what Dutchy still swears was a misunderstanding and not theft of a book, he was thinking of his family more. Things outside of New York. Whatever the rest of the world had to offer.
Strangely, he wasn't really looking forward to regaling the others with tales of adventure and excitement, thus his trepidation in returning to them. There had been a few exciting things, but for now, he'd rather just enjoy being home again. Besides whenever Cornelius "The Wanderer" decided to show up in New York soon, he'd probably tell their story a million times better than Dutchy ever could.
