Name: Les Jacobs
Age: Near 10 (technically 9 ¾, but who’s counting?)
Les Jacobs has lived in Manhattan for all his life. His family’s Harlem apartment has been the only home he’s ever known, and he plans to keep it that way. He loves New York, and he really loves being a newsie. He knew that the minute he and his brother joined up when Papa got into the accident at the factory. Even when his arm heals, Les does not plan to continue his education. He’s not a particularly bright kid and school is much too boring for his easily distracted mind. Sellin’ papes is far more interesting- and he’s pretty good at it, too. Besides, the fact that the family is depending on him for once had already inflated his ego enough.
As the youngest child of Esther and Mayor Jacobs, Les is used to being babied. Surprisingly enough, he doesn’t even notice that he’s a little spoiled and loathes the fact entirely. He finds David’s watchful eyes rather irksome and would much prefer that he would loosen up for once and leave him alone. However, he does enjoy his brother’s company more than his sister’s. After all, girls are frilly, stuffy, and gross. At least Sarah is. But, he loves her anyway and will go to any lengths to protect her… Even though swinging around a wooden sword is hardly an effective means of defense.
Les’ hobbies include playing marbles, sword fighting (of course), and seeing shows at Irving Hall (he secretly aspires to become an actor). He’s close friends with most of the Manhattan newsies, like Racetrack, Boots, and Snipeshooter, but his idol will always be Jack Kelly. He wants to be as charming, daring, and most importantly, as tall as the Cowboy. Les also envies the power he has and would like to be leader himself someday.
