THIS THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF AURELIA YOUNG also known as LUNA
Aurelia Zara Young was born in Spanish Town, Jamiaca on August 20th, 1882. Her mother, Sarah Blake was the illegitimate daughter of an English plantation owner, Hugh Blake and his maid, Zara. When Sarah was 17, she married a merchant ship worker named George Young (who was 20). A year later, Aurelia and her twin brother, Harrison were born. When the twins were 8, their parents had another child, giving them a little sister, Jamia.
Although they were colored, the Youngs lived pretty well. Aurelia and Harrison were taught to read, write, and speak French and English from their grandfather Hugh, like the white children and lived in a small house on his plantation with their parents. When he would go on short trips out to sea, their father George would take both of them with him to work on the ship when they were old enough. Aurelia loved it especially because it gave her a brief chance to get away. She longed to get away from the prejudice glances and treatment her family got.
Three years ago, while working on her father's ship, Aurelia heard some of the men talking about a trip they had made to NYC which caught her interest. So, one night she packed up some clothes and some of her belongings, left her family a note telling them she loved them, sneaked out of the house, and stowed away on one of the merchant ships bound for NYC. Even though she's just a Newsie, she's happier here than she was in Jamaica.
