Full Name: Shane Reilly Brightwell
Birth Name: Sinead Roisin Brightwell
(Shi-NAYD Roh-Sheen)
Newsie name: Emanon [as of yet, it's unofficial...]
Age: 17
Gender: Female
Birthplace: Brooklyn
Currently Living: Brooklyn, New York
History: Shane and her brother, Madden, were born and raised in Brooklyn. Their parents struggled to get by, to survive, on very low income. Their father worked as a private carriage driver, while their mother worked a minor job in a factory. Eventually, the financial strain prompted the parents to give up Shane and Madden, putting them in a local orphanage. Shane was 7 at that time, and Madden, 11. The orphanage was not a friendly place, and Shane made no friends, although Madden managed to make a few acquaintances out of some boys his age. They stayed at the orphanage for five years. When Shane was 12 , one of the older boys at the orphanage who had befriended Madden, got her alone and tried to take advantage of her.
When Madden pried the truth from Shane, he was livid. Rather than soaking the offender as was his intention, Shane pleaded with him to find a way out of the orphanage. He relented and pledged to never let anything happen to her again. True to his word, he and Shane snuck out of the orphanage during the transition from dinner to lights-out/curfew, at which point there was no orphanage staff minding the east gate.
They lived on the streets for the next few years. Madden took to pickpocketing, and while he became rather skilled, Shane refrained following his lead. Instead, she took to wandering the streets of Brooklyn, sometimes shadowing people and observing their manners and habits. "People-watching" as her brother deemed it, became her field of expertise, and through this outlet, she picked up various skills.
She's tough from having grown up in Brooklyn. She isn't a fighter, preferring dodge-and-run tactics rather than direct conflict. She does, however, keep a second-hand jack-knife on her person for security, to reassure herself that in the event that she cannot dodge-and-run she would have a means of defending herself. When she turned 15, Shane and Madden split what little money they had between them. Madden decided to head to New Jersey, but Shane resolved to stay in New York. Shane yearns for the comfort of friendship, of intimacy, but she is afraid of being abandoned again, as first her parents, then her brother abandoned her.
Shane is proud of her Irish heritage, and identifies with her Irish ancestry. She is an avid swimmer, climber, and prefers physical exercise to gambling games. She enjoys wandering through the city or boroughs, and has a good sense of direction. She is very loyal, and will not hesitate to put her life on the line for anyone who is to her, a leader, or has earned her trust. She puts group well-being before family or self. It is, in her mind, the only way to maintain her security.
Hair Color: dark brown
Hair Style: Either hanging loose down her back or pulled back in a ponytail
Eye Color: hazel
Skin Color: tan
Height: 5'3
Weight: +/- 109
Clothing Style: frayed and worn-out female clothing (i.e: an ankle-length skirt, a long-sleeved white blouse [though she usually rolls the cuffs up to her elbows], ragged, hand-me-down tweed coat [courtesy of older brother, Madden]); a pair of shorts worn under her skirts
Items owned: a few handmade bracelets & anklets of a plain brown twine (woven/knotted); a brown pocket knife; dented tin container (uses to store money)
Troubles: She's occasionally impulsive, though not necessarily reckless. Sometimes mouths off when she is angry or frustrated, and usually shortly thereafter she withdraws and bottles it up. However, she can manage her anger well, easily finding outlets. She trusts people selectively, relying on instinct rather than logic. When someone has her trust, it can become an issue because she may then be trusting to a fault.
She is somewhat cynical of others, particularly what she believes to be others' blind faith in someone they admire, or blind faith in the "American dream". She does not follow anyone blindly; she places trust in a leader who has, knowingly or not, earned her respect in one way or another.
Fears: Being trapped/cornered; commitment/intimacy; misplaced or broken trust; uncertainty; extended solitude, insecurity; abandonment
Siblings: Madden Brightwell (19 yrs) [lives somewhere in NJ]
Parents: Devon Brightwell and Katie ó Conghaile (no contact with parents)
