A Message to All Members:
It has come to our attention that some of the members who would like to play canon characters are unable to do so because they are already being played by someone else. We sincerely apologize for this and understand it can be frustrating, but ask that no one negatively comment on someone's portrayal of a character. It is rude and completely unnecessary to do so, and serves no further purpose than to offend and hurt feelings. That being said, the idea of having auditions has crossed our minds many times when considering who should be able to play said canons, but more than one person vying for a canon has simply never occurred here on 1899. In fact, canons were given out due to necessity to anyone who was willing, and when someone stepped up, we never turned them away.
It may seem we were a bit cavalier with the distribution of canon characters, but with the aforementioned lack of interest, we simply had no choice. Canon characters make for an interesting and fun RP, and without them it just doesn’t feel like Newsies. We also strongly believe in giving everyone a chance, and are not comfortable with ever telling someone they aren’t good enough to try. However, that being said, we do (and always have) reserved the right to remove someone from their canon duties if their portrayal of the character is completely off base. This information is very clearly stated in the RULES thread.
I would also like to clarify a bit of misinformation it seems several members have come across about the canon characters on the site. No, there are not a couple of people playing all of the canons. Yes, there is one person on this board who plays more than one canon character. Again, this was never our, or her, intention; but arose out of lack of interest and necessity. Since that time, however, she has proven herself completely capable of doing such, and I can’t justify forcibly taking a character from her that she has been playing masterfully for two years.
A few years back we did create what we like to call “open accounts”. This currently only applies to the Delancy brothers. Basically this means the accounts are open to several members, because no one would claim the two characters and they’re an excellent source of mischief and trouble. If you’re interested in playing a Delancy, whether for one thread or permanently, please PM the Admin!
To add to this I would also like to inform those who were unaware of the situation or reasoning behind the “retired” canons list. A year ago, a member of the site and amazing friend to many of us here tragically passed away. She played both Skittery and Pie Eater with a skill and imagination that truly brought the characters to life. There are members here who are uncomfortable with the idea of anyone else taking over for her canons, and I completely understand and respect that.
I hope this has served to inform the members of this site of how we choose canons and the reasoning behind it. Please feel free to PM us with any further questions or suggestions.
