BIRTH NAME: Blue Jay
NICKNAME: Whistle (Or Jay, if permitted)
AGE: Fifteen (some say he looks younger, some older)
HISTORY: Jay was born from Mr. Henry Jay on August 5th (not that he remembers anymore.) His mother has always been out of question, he hadn't been told anything about it. He grew up with his father, and was fourteen during the strike. He kept out of it, until he learned the devastating news that gave him a new look on life. His father was a police officer, arresting all those kids. Hate for his father raged inside him, until he lost it.
Jay took all the money and valuables he could find in his father's frankly, very large house. He had about ten dollars worth, he assumed. He ran off with it, (five dollar bill, a whistle, and his father's police badge) and hit the streets. That's where he met the Newsies, who he quickly befriended. But when one took a look at his badge, they quickly ran off. Not knowing why, he threw the badge down a gutter and followed them.
He persisted, and finally they listened. He learned that Henry Jay, his father, was hated in this Newsie community. He told them he also hated him, and everything went as planned. But now he was a runaway, a thief, and had nothing but a lot of money in his pocket and a whistle around his neck.
One boy asked him what the whistle was. He thought, and told them that it was a gift. He said it would come in handy some day, since it was a police whistle. This is where his name comes from.
PERSONALITY: Whistle is to himself, and not very open with his feelings. He's used to having everything possible, so when he doesn't get what he wants, he will get snippy. He's a fast runner, which aids in raids and getaways. He always carries his whistle around his neck, tucked under his shirt.
LOOKS: After running away from his father, he knew he had to change his looks. He switched his outfit to normal Newsie wear, a tunic with baggy pants, suspenders, a black vest, and a cap. He despised the cap and gave it to someone else. He used his money to buy a bottle of peroxide to dye his hair, but that grew out after a few months and he didn't feel like saving for it again, so kept his hair its natural golden brown.
