Clement "Snoddy" King, 19 years old.
Clement was born to an unwed mother in Glenrowan, Victoria, Australia, who claimed he was the illegitimate progeny of infamous (and recently hanged) bushranger Ned Kelly. Despite his assumed ancestry, Clement himself was a quiet child who kept largely to himself and avoided confrontation and violence at most any cost. His mother worked at and lived in the budding town's saloon, where Clement could usually be found cowering behind the door of his mother's bedroom whenever a fight broke out in the main area (which was frequently). When allowed to leave his mother's sight, Clement preferred to be by himself, wandering among the bush and "making friends" with the animals he would find, sometimes staying gone for several days at a time. (Though he had a personality very different from the raucous and law-breaking man he believed to be his father, he felt that the ease at which he found surviving in the inhospitable and dangerous bush for extended periods was proof enough of his paternity.)
In 1893, his mother recognized the beginnings of the Bunuba War and quickly made arrangements for herself and her son to immigrate to America. Clement spent four years in Oregon with his mother, until she contracted tuberculosis and eventually passed away. With no familial ties left, Clement felt the urge to travel, and spent the next year stowing away on boxcars, getting off whenever the need struck him and trainhopping again when he felt it was time to move on. During his stays, he performed odd jobs to earn money for food, and enjoyed sleeping outside at night.
In 1898, he found himself in New York City. Intrigued by the big city, where so many people of so many backgrounds lived and worked and shared their lives, he decided to hang around for a while. With a lack of nature, he found "camping" at nights to be too much of a challenge, especially during months where you'd lose feeling in your toes after only a few hours outside. After a few weeks of attempting it, Clement found himself with a cold that he couldn't shake, and a desire to find himself a normal bed to sleep in at night. To provide, he took to carrying the banner through the Manhattan borough.
Though he introduced himself as Clement, he was quickly branded with the nickname of "Snoddy," courtesy of his cold. Though he got over the cold, the name stuck. As one to often settle for his lot in life, Snoddy found himself getting used to his unappealing nickname. During the spring, his allergies and tendency to lose his handkerchief keep him deserving of the name.
Trivia
- Gets unusually excited about the prospect of searching for animals, especially squirrel nests.
- Tends to suffer from bouts of word vomit, and can't stop talking, even though he really, really wants to.
- Doesn't smoke, rarely drinks.
- Has a soft spot for the younger newsies, particularly Half Pint in Queens, whom he often feels responsible for.
-Is harboring a steadily growing crush on Brook LeRue. Had his heart broken at a very vulnerable moment by Brook LeRue. Can't speak to her now.
- Has a small handwritten journal his mother gave him, in which she listed all his father's good points, like the time he jumped in a river to rescue a drowning boy and almost drowned himself, so Snoddy wouldn't grow up thinking he was the product of a heartless cold-blooded thieving murderer. He carries it in his breast pocket at all times.
- Hasn't told anyone in New York of his father's notoriety.
- Is homesick.
