After her mother died giving birth to her baby brother Liam (who also died), she became caretaker for her brother Shamrock and her father at a very young age. For fear of loosing the farm, her father hired on a man--who brought a son with him--to help. The man’s son became a huge help and best friend to young Pallet, and together they took care of the both families until both fathers were murdered. Not having anyone let to care for the three kids, they boarded a ship and found themselves in New York City. For several months, they lived on the streets in alleys and abandoned buildings, with the boys working as Newsies and Pallet as a laundress--trying to save up their money. After her boss’ son’s attempt to sexually assault her, she quit that job and joined the boys on the streets selling papers and her paintings, and became wary of men she didn’t know for a few years. Soon after, they found permanent lodging in the Bronx and their small make-shift family became a large one, and they helped her overcome her wariness of men.
