The O'Shea's were one of the wealthiest Irish families in Galway. Aodhan and his older sister, Ashleigh, were very privileged children and were taught to treat others with kindness and generosity. Aodhan was also, raised as The O'Shea--the one to take over from his father when he died. After giving birth to Aodhan, Kiera O'Shea was left weak and frail. Six years later, after the birth of Aodhan, on December 4th, 1891 Declan and Kiera had one more child, Liam. A week later, Aodhan's mother, Kiera died of a disease called sepsis leaving Ashleigh to take care of her family at the age of 10--causing her to grow up faster than most kids her age. Ashleigh took over as the woman of the house--cooking and cleaning--and she took care of Aiden and Liam (fed them, bathed them, put them to bed, etc..). A month after Liam's birth, Liam died of pneumonia. The death of his wife and his youngest son soon after, hit Declan O'Shea hard and for three years his farm began to suffer. So realizing he was in trouble, Declan hired a man named Harlon Winston Hastings and his 14 y/o son, Jackson to help work and oversee the farm. The Hastings' became very close to the O'Shea family and moved into the manor with them after just a few months. Jackson and Ashleigh became best friends, working together to take care of their fathers and 9 year old Aodhan. Two years later, a wealthy English man moved into Galway looking for fertile, prosperous land to buy. He set his sights on the O'Shea farm. He was so adamant about buying the farm that he threatened Declan and Harlon after their several refusals, telling them he would do anything to get what he wanted. Several nights later while the family was eating dinner, their barn was set fire to, and several large men started breaking windows in the house to break in. Declan and Harlon, sent Jackson, Ashleigh, and Aodhan to sneak out the backdoor and hide in the woods behind the house, while they dealt with the men. As they were escaping out the back, Jackson, Ashleigh, and Aodhan heard gun shots echo from inside the house. They ran as fast as they could and hid in the woods all night. In the morning, they returned to the house and found, Declan and Harlon shot dead in the dining room. Ashleigh broke into her father's safe and took the money hidden there--for food, room and board, and passage. Then after burying their fathers, they left. Ashleigh bought tickets, for the three of them, for a boat headed for America... When they arrived in NYC, (Ashleigh-15, Jackson-16, and Aodhan-11) they ended up sleeping on the streets and in alley's for a couple weeks--living off what little money they had left--until Jackson found jobs as Newsies for himself and Aodhan, and Ashleigh found a job as a laundress. They ended up living in several abandoned houses for months at a time, trying to save up their money. After joining the Newsies a couple years later, Aodhan's sister, Ashleigh was able to find them permanent lodging in the Bronx. Ashleigh, Jackson, and Aiden have been inseparable since (Ashleigh & Jackson, more so than Aodhan because he needs to be away from his sister watchful eyes sometimes). Aodhan learned from Jackson and some of the other boys to be street smart and tough. Being a big 14 year old, he's been able to handle himself quite well. He vaguely remembers his parents because he was so young when they died, but with his sister's help through a small painting she painted for him, he tries hard not to forget.
