Name: Radek Miloslav Dvorak
Nickname: Milo
Origin of nickname: He never really managed to get true “newsie” nickname, but the other newsies weren’t able to pronounce his name correctly so, upon hearing his full name they decided to simply address him by an Americanized version of his middle name.
Age: 7
History: Born in Moravia (an area in the Czech Republic) in 1892, Radek and his parents immigrated to America when he was one year old. His father got a Job in a factory and his mother got a job in a textile mill when he was old enough to stay home alone (by 1800’s standards). They lived in a small tenement apartment with another family and built a reasonably good life together. When he was four, however, his father died in a work related accident and his mother followed a year later after a long bout of tuberculosis. The family they had lived with tried to raise him for awhile but were unable to support him financially and turned him out after a few months. After wandering around Manhattan begging and pick pocketing for some time he was brought in to the boarding house by an older boy and started work as a newsie the next day.
Personality/Habits: He is somewhat quiet and shy but will get your attention if he wants it. He loves to observe people and can often get potential customers to buy from him just to make him stop staring at them; otherwise he often opts to tell sad stories about what will happen to him if he doesn’t sell all of his papers over shouting headlines on street corners. If asked he’ll tell you that being a newsie is a lot like begging, all you have to do is be able to pick up on the sweet smell of an all day sucker.
