"Bull shit," he actually hissed back. "I'm not your bloody lord and master Lex. If I were I'd have caned you for makin me look like a bloody fool... but seein how that's not the way of it.." He narrowed his eyes at her, Dodger had a few stages. It had been a long while since he'd felt his blood boil like this. Long before he'd become the leader of The Bronx, back when he didn't have to worry about who got hurt or why. "You want a fight, Lex? I'm itchen for one meself.. so come on, lay it on me."

"Made you look like a fool?" Lexi spat, feeling her face heat up and not from embarrassment but from anger. "What do you think you did when you spoke for every woman in the Bronx. It doesn't matter how you worded it, you made us look weak!" Lexi began to pace in a small line, "Is that what you think we are? Weak?!" She pinned him with a piercing gaze and stepped forward mere inches from his face. "How do you think we survived before we showed up on your doorstep? We don't need a damn knight in shining armor to protect us! I did a damn good job protecting myself before you came into my life."

He wanted to reach out and touch her so he just balled his fists at his side. "Oh aye, that's how you see it is it? You think I think you're weak and pathetic aye? Well love if ya were I'd have kicked your ass into Queens, no disrespect meant ta Prince or anything but I don't need to dead weight. I already lost someone I cared about to somethin I couldn't stop, many in this borough died Lex. And I didn't think I wanted to worry about the girls I have. But you're right, stopping you pig headed females is like you is like tryin to get water from a bloody rock. But news flash Lexi, what happens to anyone in the Bronx now IS my responsibility. You think I don't know how strong you bloody insane women are? You kidding me? I don't give a two shits damn what you were doing before you came here and settled. Hell you could have been a serial killer for all I know but now.. you're a part of the Bronx. And that's where I protect what is ours. It took me a long time to finally see that I was responsible. You think I thought I'd be standin' here years ago?
"I'm THIEF Lexi. It's what I'd done most of my LIFE to keep on step ahead and I'm still at least realistic. Chances our we're going to lose some of my number and is it MY fault I wanted to protect some of them? I'm a selfish bastard, Lex... and I'm not even going to pretend I'm not. I wasn't going to make you stay, you have a stake in this so don't act like I don't give a fuck about what you think!"
(wow.. Dodger.. F- word... dodger.. 325 words)

Lexi felt as if she'd been slapped by his words and her breathing became slightly shallow as he spoke. "Maybe what you need is confidence. Not just in yourself but in us! We aren't going to fail. We knew the risk the minute people went missing and more so when we found out the damn pigs were involved. We didn't brush any of that off and think it would be a walk in the park and we certainly didn't think that when we found out about the guns! If people don't want to go then fine they don't have to. I have no problem with that, but trying to keep them home for their own protection is not the way to lead people. They will despise you for that and lose faith in you." Lexi took a deep breath and wrapped her arms around herself.
"Maybe everyone doesn't have a brother or a friend who was taken but the impact has hit everyone. It could have been their brother or their friend. I'm sure most want to go. Because on the streets what do you have besides your pride? People don't respect you, they don't care about you! We are all family! We're all connected. We're all we have! We need each other and we need to stand together regardless of the obstacles." With a sigh, Lexi turned her head towards the side for a moment before looking back at Dodger with the same piercing gaze. "You may have thought you were doing what was in their best interest but you weren't. Honestly I think you felt it was in your best interest."

Her words struck a cord, he hadn't gotten physically violent with a woman in years but he had the urge in that moment, so he took her arm a bit ruffly and tugged her into the shadows and away from the onlookers. His voice was low when he spoke, "What had always been in my best interest has always tended to be my first priority. You think I was ready for this? I was steeling to survive one week then the next I'm shoved into something that I wasn't sure I could do. I stood up for this borough, I've protected it and--"
Hell she was right, at least about the part about family. She was right, but he hadn't been accepting that. Dodger had always been a loner, it was just how he was but at that moment he reached out and grabbed her face so she'd look at him in the face. "You want to be my family Lexi? Most of the people that have ever claimed that they liked me, or cared about me are long gone." The man had protected himself pretty well over the last while, he never showed it but he never let many in either. "Dead, or just gone. So maybe your right, maybe I'm being selfish because I don't have much faith in people.. but can you stand here and tell me that you have faith in me to do what is right? A thief and a liar? Hell I didn't even tell my ex sickly girlfriend what my real name was... think you can trust me?"

Lexi stared at him when he spoke and her eyes widened when he grabbed her arm and pulled her into the shadows. For a brief moment her mind lapsed back to that night when she'd had horrible things done to her in Jersey City and she was a hairs breath away from smacking him but she calmed herself. She was safe. Although she hadn't known Dodger long she knew he would never hurt her. It was more than just a thought it was a gut feeling. As he finished speaking Lexi tilted her head back a little so she could look up in his eyes. "With my life, Dodger. You may not trust me with yours but I know you would do everything in your power to keep me safe."
Lexi pulled her arm from his grip and her hand over it absentmindedly. She thought carefully for a moment before speaking. "People have a way of betraying you in the littlest things they do. They may not even realize it but it's their nature. It's everyone's nature. I can say you can trust me and I won't betray you but I can't make you feel that way because who has ever proven that to you?" Lexi's heart swelled at the thought of him alone with no one to care for him or take care of him when he was sick. "Maybe there was part of you that held back from telling her your real name. Regardless of whatever it was I"m not her,I don't need to know. I just want you to have faith that I will stand by your side and show you that I'm not disposable. I will protect you and my family with everything I have."
Lexi stared deeply into his eyes trying to decipher exactly what he was thinking and feeling. "Our pasts are our pasts we can't change it but we can use it to make our futures better. Many people have stolen everyone has lied, it doesn't shape who we are. It doesn't determine our worth. Only we can do that. And your worth more than that. You aren't defined by things you've done but by your character. And you have that in abundance."

He stared at her as he listened to her talk, he opened and closed his hand once she pulled away as he listened to her. She didn't need to know his name, just him. Who he was was enough. That was something, her words took the wind out of his sails a bit as he watched her tell him to trust her when he could. He let out a breath and he touched her cheeks with both hands, trying to figure out what he wanted to say.
"Trust me to see you, and I'll trust you to see me," it was a strange way of putting it but he had to clear his mind, temper normally left him wondering about his own merit as a person but when she said that he had character in spades he was grinning slightly. "Lexi half it's just a game, a game I'm playin that no one else knows the rules but me. Life's the same. If you want to stay by my side, then stand by it-- and fight along side me and we'll protect each other. I can't say that I'm not going to make you angry and.. fact is I'm glad you do. I can't handle being afraid I'm going to say something or do something that's going to shatter you.."
He'd shattered Moira, and he'd been so strung out trying not too it was to much to take. "I know your not her, and I won't ever expect you to be her. Hell I don't want you to be her. Ever. I can't break you... you showed me that." he kissed her cheek gently. "And I'll be bold as to say you've never looked more gorgeous to me as you did when you told me to stick it up my arse.."

Lexi couldn't tear her eyes away from Dodger's as he spoke, it was so understandable how he had become leader. He was captivating or maybe it was just her he captivated whenever he spoke. He was so much like her it was unbelievable. This person he knew, it wasn't who she was it was who she pretended to be to keep her past from popping back up at every moment. It was amazing she'd kept herself in check this long but he was right, it was a game in some ways. A game she played with herself to make people think she was this person that really she wasn't. She could never be.
When he told her he thought she was gorgeous when she was angry she couldn't help the saucy smile that crossed her face. She almost said that wasn't the only time she was on fire but she kept it to herself. She didn't want to unleash the person she'd been completely. "You can depend on me to do that Dodger. To show you that I will stand by you and fight by you. Like I know you'll fight by me." She broke off for a moment to collect her thoughts. "You're right, you can't break me. I was broken before and I won't ever let it happen again."
Staring at him for a second longer, Lexi wished they'd been able to have this conversation when they'd have more time to figure things out. The emotions running through her body were thrilling and scary at the same time. It had been a long time since she'd felt this way and she didn't know what it meant. Trying to distract herself, Lexi forced herself to look around. "We should probably join the others."

He let his eyes shift and he looked around for a moment, it was true wasn't it. So he did what any man facing death would do with a girl that understood him more than most. The masks that he wore and when they'd both gotten a peak at the darker side neither one of them wanted to turn away. Dodger had a way of speaking that made people listen, but.. he had other ways to make people stand at attention.
He pressed his lips to hers before he pulled back and smirked, "I'm a man facin death." Was his reply before he ran his fingers threw her hair and let it fall. "Let me see the real you more often Lex.. we both need.." his hand fell to her shoulder and he turned it was time to go back in and be responsible.
And then go to challenge death.

When he kissed her it was electrifying, her entire body tingled with need and want but he pulled away so abruptly that her body then screamed out in protest. She needed more and after he spoke she stopped him from turning completely with a hand on his shoulder, her other hand diving into his hair. She stood on her toes and leaned up kissing him deeper than before. "And I'm a woman facing death...." She said as she pulled away. She gave him a smile and gently touched his cheek with her hand before pulling her hands away from him and stepping out from the shadows. "We are going to win this, Dodger. We are going to get them back. All of them." She looked up at him a moment of understanding passing from her eyes to him. "I'm glad I have you at my side. I couldn't ask for anything more."

He couldn't help but grin as he followed her, that woman was going to give him a run for his money. He honestly couldn't ask for more as he came up behind her and draped his arm around her shoulders and started walking back towards the meeting hall with that satisfied smirk. "We're goin ta finish that after we win.."
Dodger was a man of many words and many faces but that was just how he was. "You've got me by your side to the end.." Because she was interesting, she had all the layers that he wanted to dig deep to see more. The only problem with that was that he had to let her see his own. But, he was starting to think he could manage that.

As he draped his arm around her shoulders she briefly reached her hand up to touch his and then let it drop again to her side before they were in anyone's line of sight. Glancing up she gave him a tender smile and took a page from his book as she spoke, "Aye, that we are." She grinned, a satisfied look on her face. Now that they'd kissed she knew it was something she'd been wanting for awhile but was to afraid to face. Of course now that they'd kissed it felt like it would be second nature. "And you have me at yours." She finished quietly before they got close to the others. God this was so unexpected and yet at the same time it felt so right as if it should have happened long ago. Dodger was a man of many faces and that alone made him a puzzle but he was also a man of deep-rooted loyalty and that made him a man Lexi could respect. She cared for him more than she had cared for another outside of her family. She knew that whatever happened between them was something she would enjoy. Even their arguments made her body feel as though it was on fire and not with anger.

Dodger would sort that out when he wasn't planning for war, he felt like a general and he realized he didn't like the position but he would do what needed to be done. When she touched him it drew out a smile, this woman... he liked her sass, and he did like the way her hips moved when she walked. But most importantly he liked her mind. Anyone can change but little licks of the old always got out and gave them start, Dodger was no exception. But kissing Lexi, had been like nothing else he'd felt in a long time. It wasn't like kissing Moira, there was more fire, not as much fear. Then again he wasn't the same person Moira had been kissing.
He smirked at her head and chuckled, well there it was. "That's what I need. After this is over... we're going to have a lot of talking to do.."

She glanced up at him, her eyes showing the appreciation her body felt for what had happened between them. "Yes we are," Her words spoke volumes but her face said even more. She now understood him in a way she hadn't before. Before she'd known only what he showed but now she saw what had always been there. It made her pause. She'd had many life lessons the most important being to always see the truth behind the lies. Some people had a clever way of covering up the hideous person they were inside and others shielded the beautiful person they could be because they thought it was a defect of sorts. A way for someone t attack them and exploit their weaknesses. She thought that Dodger may fall in that category. Everyone made mistakes but only someone with true depth could grow from those mistakes and make themselves a better person for it. "Let's go make them pay for what they foolishly did."
