Lexi looked down from the spot on the ceiling she'd been staring at and forced a slight smile to cross her face. She gave Pallet a shrug and glanced around not really meeting the girls eyes. "Good as can be I suppose..." Lexi had been experiencing horrible mood swings lately and the one hitting her now was vast and horrible sadness. "I'm asking everyone to stay in for the night. Dodgers not in the city and I think it would be best if we all tried to stay in the houses. I'm pretty sure Lefty is asking the same thing of the boys."
Of course she wasn't positive since she hadn't really spoken to Dodger about it, but she highly doubted he would be upset about it. If anything he would want the same thing considering what happened the last time they had a leaders meeting.

"Sure thing, no problem Lexi." Pallet gave her a crooked smile. Pallet watched Lexi for a minute or two. She noticed a sadness about Lexi and how she was avoiding eye contact...
"Um... Lexi you know if you ever need anything, or ever wanna talk, Oi'm here for you..." Afraid to upset her, Pallet wasn't sure about making her next comment, but she thought it might help, "Shamrock is about the same age as... well... yeah. So I kinda know how Oi would feel if the same thing happened..." Pallet bit her bottom lip.

Usually she did not mind the streetlight-lit nights of New York, but tonight, an uneasiness seemed to fall upon the city, smothering it like a blanket. Spades quickened her pace, casting a few cautious glances over her shoulder as she made her way to what was to be her new home: the 72nd St Girls Lodge. Perhaps it was the idea of starting a new life after spending so many years working in a sweatshop across town that caused her to be overcome with discomfort, but the feeling became greater as night masked the city.
It was very late by the time the lodge came into view. Figuring that most of the newsies would already be up in their bunks getting ready to go to sleep, Spades' walk turned into a bit of a run. It was eerie being outside on her own. She rushed to get inside, hoping to be greeted by someone who would be able to give her a place to sleep, but she was instead greeted by two girls at the front desk. The were in the middle of what seemed to be a private conversation. Feeling a bit awkward, Spades slowly walked the rest of the way up to the desk.
"Um... hello. Any idea who I go to to get a room in this place?" she asked as she clutched her satchel, feeling strangely out of place.

"Um... hello. Any idea who I go to to get a room in this place?"
Turning towards the girl belonging to the voice, Pallet smiled. "Ello. Oi'm Pallet O'Shea and this here" Pallet motioned towards Lexi, "is Alexandria Halliway. She's in charge around here. She'll tell you where you can bunk..." Looking the girl up and down, and not recognizing her, Pallet asked in her thick Irish accent, "You new 'round here?"

Spades took off her hat and shyly nodded her head.
"Um, yes actually. New to these parts, at least," she explained. "I used to live over in Manhattan. Worked in an old sweatshop, but had to find me a new way to make a livin. The place actually burned down." Spades looked down at the ground and shuffled her feet a bit. It was a rather sore subject. She had been working when it happened, narrowly escaping it by climbing out of a window. She cleared her throat a bit and changed the subject. "Anyway, it's nice to meet you both. The name's Spades. Are both of you newsies?"

Lexi nodded to Pallets words of her brother but didn’t say anything because she was certain that anything that came out of her mouth would be offensive and rude. Those were two things Lexi strived not to be. Taking a deep breath, Lexi opened her mouth to say something when the front door opened. She glanced over and gave a smile to the girl who walked through, not recognizing her. “Hello…”
When Pallet introduced her, Lexi gave the girl a smile. “Pleasure to meet you, please call me Lexi.” It took her a moment to realize that Pallet had said she was in charge and the thought made Lexi’s face tinge a bit with red. She certainly didn’t think of herself as in charge. All she was doing was helping Dodger until everything went back to normal. Lexi was pretty sure he’d only asked so that she would have something to take her mind off Perry. When Spades mentioned the sweat shop that burned down Lexi’s heart clenched, “When was that?”
She knew it was probably nothing but any little thing that occurred that could give her clues to finding her brother she was going to jump on. Of course though it would probably turn up nothing, but there was no harm in finding out if there was something behind it. “Most of the girls here sell papes, I work in a restaurant. Some do odd jobs.”

Spades thought it over in her head. It felt as though the fire had happened only yesterday, being as it was still fresh in her mind, but she knew it had been a while since the incident. "I'd say it happened around a month ago? I don't even remember the exact date. I know it was front page news in The World for a while after it happened though." Spades had seen reminders of the fire everywhere she went in Manhattan after it took place. It was as if she couldn't escape from it. This constant reminder of the tragedy was what brought her to the Bronx. That, and the promise of a new life. Spades needed to get away from the life and family that she could no longer handle anymore.
Spades turned towards Lexi with a little smile on her face after being told that she was the one in charge. "Do you think you could give me a room in this place? I don't need anything fancy, just a bed to sleep in is all I ask."

Lexi kept her eyes trained on Spades as she spoke, nodding her head hear and there. She barely held back a sigh when Spades said it had happened over a month ago and she remembered hearing the newsies talk about it making the headlines good. Lexi leaned against the front desk and gave Spades a slight smile. "Of course you can stay here. I'm not really in charge, I'm just looking after the girls until we sort somethings out. The leader here is Dodger, he won't be back in town till late and I don't think it's necessary that you see him about staying here. I'll let him know. Anyway the bunks are right upstairs to your right, can't miss 'em."

"But you might as well be, love," Dodger piped up coming up behind Lexi and giving her a playful kiss on the cheek. "'Ello loves." His eyes fell on the new girl and he wondered where Fibs was. He had girls galore in his borough, it was lucky that he had the boys he had also. "I'm moving both girls and boys into the girls house since it's nicer. We need to be together and we'll make it work. Also.... we're having a borough meeting... mind if we do it here Lex?" He had made her honorary leader of the girl's house. And as far as he was concerned she was his-- well partner in a sense.

Spades looked curiously at the boy who had joined the three girls at the front desk. She tried to make sense of his words with no success. She thought perhaps that it was just typical newsie talk and that borough meetings took place all the time. Still, there seemed to be a degree of concern in his voice as he spoke. She figured the only way to be filled in would be to ask questions.
"A meeting? What for?" Spades asked, trying to sound less eager to discover the reason than she actually was.

Pallet leaned back against the desk and listened to Lexi talk to Spade, glancing back and forth between the two of them. Just as Lexi started to talk about Dodger, Pallet saw him walk in the room. He always seemed to have perfect timing.
She watched as he greeted Lexi and noticed a look of concern on his face when he looked at Spades.
"Also.... we're having a borough meeting..."
Pallet stood up straight from where she was leaning against the desk. She furrowed her brow and bit her bottom lip, wondering what was going on. "A borough meeting? Did the leaders find out something at your meeting, Dodger?"

As Dodger walked up behind her, Lexi glanced over her shoulder and offered him a slight smile at his words. It was actually quite comforting to know that he put such faith in trust in her, especially at a time like this. Taking after the girls helped to keep her mind off Perry enough that she wouldn't break down. "Of course we can have the meeting here Dodger."
Lexi thought that his idea of combining the houses was a good one at this point. It would make keeping an eye one everyone so much easier and that's exactly what she planned on doing. She would be damned if anyone else went missing. When Spades spoke Lexi turned her gaze towards the girl and studied her silently for a moment. Although she doubted the girl would do them harm it was hard for her to trust someone she didn't know, especially at a time like this.

He draped an arm over her shoulders and looked at the new girl he hadn't seen before, a smirk crossed his dace and he raised a brow. "Ya best be stickin' around ta find out if your curious.."
When Pallet spoke he turned his attention to her and shook his head, with a grunt. "Actually, no. All we've learned is that Spot Conlon is back, we're all missing kids and that we need to pair up. So no running off alone, Pallet and keep your brother close we don't want him running off anywhere."
He looked down at Lexi and smiled, he did love this girl to bits. It was true, "Alright Lex. I'll go get Lefty and gather the boys.. we'll be here by dawn I think. Don't let the girls out on their own, pairs.. alright?"

Pallet smiled and nodded at Dodger, "Sure thing, Dodger. Right now Oi believe he's with Byron." Feeling a bit relieved that the leaders didn't have any bad news, she resumed her previous position leaning up against the front desk. But, still worried about all the missing kids, she continued to chew on her bottom lip, which she often did when nervous or worried.

Lexi nodded, "Of course Dodger." She already was telling girls that she didn't want them out after dark unless they were in a group. Too many women and children were missing and she would die before another one went missing.
