Zoo took some more of the smoke and laughed a little. "Family, Irish people, and lots of pubs."

--New Day for Specs-- Bumlets was waiting for his friend to catch up as he looked up at the girl's lodging house. They'd gone to the boys first but the note that was left hanging on the door told them what they needed to know. Oy! At the girl's house. If you need us. Dodger
[/blockquote][/blockquote][/blockquote] So they'd ended up leaving the house and heading down a few blocks, this entire buddy system wasn't so bad. It was him and Specs, Blink went off with Race to Brooklyn and if they were going to do something, they might as well hit Dodger up first before they crossed over to Queens. Go up, then across. Right? Deciding that it was better than anything else Bumlets shoved his hands in his pockets as she looked back at his friend, his every handy broomstick was still hooked in his arm as it always was. Almost as if he was always looking for a fight. Ever dour at times, but he'd been more so since Mabel had left the lodging house. He just wasn't going to say how much it upset him. Hell not even a goodbye. "Drew, why don't I think this is gonna be easy?" he didn't like any of this. Sweets being scrapped up, telling them the kids were still there, he didn't like any of it at all but what was a guy to do. He hadn't even thought of Mabel being one of the missing but it crossed his mind now. But she'd taken all her things... that had been what had lead him to believe she just went home.

Specs had been lagging a few paces behind Bumlets for most of the walk from the Boys' Lodging House to the Girls'. On those rare occasions when Specs was in a sober, contemplative mood, he walked more slowly as thoughts ran through his head. He was thinking about a lot of things: Sweets, the other kids, what he had heard, the cops, the buddy system, the other boroughs. All of it was just a bit too heavy for a kid like Specs, who wasn't used to worrying about tomorrow and even less used to worrying about what was going on today. During the strike, his reckless and carefree nature, and total disregard for any kind of authority (except maybe Jack's), had been an asset. Now that everything had to be planned and thought over and discussed, he was out of his element.
"Drew, why don't I think this is gonna be easy?"
Specs bit his lip, not bothering to correct Bumlets on his name. "Cause it ain't," he said simply. "Dunno what Jack wants to cook up with all this...but you know it's gonna be tough, and we're gonna be dragged smack into it all." How difficult would Jack's plan be? How dangerous? Jack would always have a plan; everyone knew that when Jack wasn't talking, he was scheming.

It was lucky for them that Dodger was easy to spot, he raised a brow when he saw them and walked up to the gate leaning on it. Dodger used to be a Manhattan newsie and the lads there were still friends of his.
"Hey mates, what brings you blokes my way?"
Bumlets looked up when he heard Dodger's voice and he met his eyes, "Sweets is back, Jack wants you to head to the lodging house... she's got.. things to say.."
All he had to say was Sweets was back and Dodger spun around heading towards the lodging house for a moment that had Bumlets looking to Specs. Did Dodger look-- mad? It was so unheard of but he heard the barking orders as Dodger came out, hat and jacket in hand as he swung open the gate.
"Not a lot of time."
