Smalls leaned up agsint the wall, shielding her match from the wind as she lit a cigarette. She wasn't usually here this early, but never for any particular reason. She got to the distribution center at different times, not really one for routine. Taking a long drag on her cigarette she glanced up at the large clock above the building across the street, hoping the gates would open soon.

"Avie," on the other hand wasn't selling this morning. He didn't sell often, he was a dock worker. He hadn't been home yet, since last night, thanks to a late night poker game that went really late. Imagine his surprise when he saw smalls by the gate, and so early in the morning too. He found it a little odd to be honest with you.
"Well..." he said as he got closer. "Up with the sun, eh sunshine?" he asked teasing the tough Brooklyn Girl. Oh he knew better than to push his luck with Smalls, so he'd be cautious for a change. "You seem ta be here awful early ta be sellin' papes," he commented.

Joe hated early mornings and the bright light didnt help much but the nicotine was easing the ache behind his eyes and in his chest due to another late night. sticking another cigarette behind his ear for later he held the drag he'd taken in and waited for it to burn. Early morning burn was the best. Scratching his 5 o-clock scruff he walked toward the distribution center eyeing Smalls and Avalanche as he caught up with them. "Early ta bed early ta rise." he said darkly and nodded in greeting.

Smalls grinned at Avalance, shifting her back from the wall and turning to lean on her shoulder. "Well ya know, when ya don' sleep it aint hard ta get up." She smirked, blowing out a puff of smoke. "The docks aint payin' no more or what?" She knew dock workers had to occasionally find side work, often selling papers, but it wasn't often she saw Avalanche here
Hearing Joe's voice she glanced to her side, still resting against the cool brick. "Shore," she took another drag on her cigarette, blowing the smoke out to the side. "Somethin' like that."

Avalanche chuckled, but nodded with a smile. He found Joe's remark funny, it had been the opposite for him, which he intended to explain to the both of them.
In responce to Smalls he said, "naw, they still pay me... 'nuff ta pay the rent anywhat," he said. "But there was a late night Poker game that Prince insisted I come to last night... got to bed late, and woke up around... 20 minutes ago," he said with a smirk. "So in my case it's... get some sleep eventually, early to rise." He looked between the two of them, his eyes resting on Joe. "Dun believe we've met," he said offering his hand. "Name's Avalanche."

Joe groaned as he eased off the wall ta shake Avalanche's hand. "Joe" he said then he let his body fall back to the wall and took another drag from his half gone cigarette. Damn he thought to himself as he looked at fast burning end. "Knew Palmah from Jersey and as she can attest i dont do well wit mornins." he all but mumbles as his eyes drooped in a state between constant awareness and sleep deprivation.

Smalls nodded at Avalance's explanation, having often experienced much the same herself. As the two introduced themselves she eyed the clock again, yawning before she took a final drag on her cigarette and flicked it to the ground. "I don' think theahs a man alive who does well wit mornin's aftah a night a no sleep."

"No kiddin'," Avalanche said as he yawned. He glanced at Joe with a small smile. Poor guy was half asleep wasn't he? "So," he said turning his attention back to Smalls once more. "What is it that's got you up here so early. I mean, I know ya just love sellin' papes, but I didn't realize ya got such a jump on the day," he added with a smirk.

Joe growled in reply to Smalls as he took another drag from his cigarette. "From one burrough ta da next. Its a curse." Joe said meaning he'd been scouting the different burroughs all night. Joe snorted at Avalanches remark. "Yeah Palmah youse usually a bum."

Smalls scoffed, giving Joe a good punch in the ribs for his remark. She shrugged in response to Avalanche's question, not entirely sure what her reason was for being here so early. "Some mornings it just don't pay ta try an' sleep, I was awake, so I figured, what the hell.." She looked up as a few Queens newsies passed by and she glanced to Avalanche. "So you were with Prince huh? How're things goin' with Queens?" Smalls tended to be hard on Queens newises, but it was mostly just due to their close proximity to Brooklyn.

Avalanche smiled to Joe. Not a bad guy. To response to Smalls he simply shrugged. "Fine," he reported. "Nothing new, nothin' changed much. Just... new kids comin' and old kids goin'. Seems to happen on a daily basis..." he shrugged slightly. "Though kids can't seem to toughen up," he said shaking his head slightly. "I mean... the young ones, or some of the others... for some reason," he shook his head, "I dunno, they jus dun get it or somethin," it kinda upset him a little... he wasn't sure how anyone without a little toughness to them would make it out here.

"Seems ta be happenin a lot around all da burroughs. Dont know how dey keep their strength sides good leadahs." Joe said as he rubbed his ribs before bumping Smalls with his elbow on purpose and then easing down the wall to sit and rubbing his face tiredly. "If deres anothah war or something..." He let it hang "...God im tired." taking another drag he finished his cigarette and thought "Dont know what powahs would go where or who'd fare in dat fight."

Smalls gave Joe a good shove as he sat down before looking back up to Avalanche and rolling her eyes slightly. "That's why ya gotta make 'em get it." In Brooklyn, you didn't get a second chance, and in Smalls' mind it was the only logical way to run things. It wasn't that she didn't like Prince, hell, she respected any girl ballsy enough to lead, but she just thought the Queens Leader was a little too soft around the edges. Absently patting her pockets for another smoke she glanced down at Joe. She let what he said silently sink in, but didn't think it was very likely.

Avalanche looked down at them and then took a seat beside them. He knew who smalls was talkin' about, and took no offense to it. "Ditto," he said to Joe on the comment about being tired. He needed to work on his sleep cycle, he was all messed up.
"Wonder what would happen if somethin' broke out again? A war..." he said thinking about it. It wouldn't be good, he figured that. But he couldn't imagine what other things would upset the newsies society beyond the war. Of course... he was also too tired to think.
