This house used to be owned by the Darling family. Now the furniture is covered in sheets and dust, and on occasion thieves dig through the premises, looking for forgotten treasures. It's also a nice place to keep warm for the homeless who are aware of it's uninhabited state.

Marha Darling looked up at the grand oak door that loomed ahead of her like a trap that would fall behind her once she stepped into the familiar house and listened with growing despair as her heeles barely made a sound, for the layers of dust cussioned their tread. She walked slowly across the black and white tiled floors now greying to the grand staircase. as she asended up the velvet carpet she ran one hand over the railing, dust gathering under her nails, and the other over the faces of the portraits on the walls. Her family was so happy, except for her mother of coarse. She made her way from room to room checking to make sure everything was as it should be. Then she came to the farthest room. Her old room. As she opened the door the scent of roses and amber over flowed her senses. She leaned against the smooth door frame her knees growing weak. Marha began to hyperventalate. She took one more step into the damask room. "Oh god!" She whispered then taking in a ragged breath. She went to the bed. She could remember that night when her father rushed in here and took only a few long strides and grasped her neck. Tight, so tight. She remember only screaming once that was all it took. Her brother rushed in and Matt pulled the trigger... Marha nelt down her skirts pooling around her and lifted the rug with fear in her eyes and in her heart. "AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!" She screamed her eyes pooling over with tears which fell on the red stain that lay unmasked before her. Her own father... shot... by her brothers... and it was all her fault! And there she lay crumpled on the floor, dry of tears, and mourning.

Dutchy knew he shouldn't be hanging around Fifth Ave. He didn't belong here and unless you made yourself a bit more presentable, no one would buy from you. But he'd been reading alot about ghosts lately. Fascinating subject. He had read about what happened to the Darling family. He couldn't help but think that something must be roaming the halls of the huge manor.
And the police hadn't even chained up the door or boarded up the windows. A few were broken, looters, most likely before they broke the doors open. Dutchy took a deep breath and started for the broken door, just planning to slip inside. He took a good look around first for the bulls before inching his thin body inside.
The scream sounded very real. Not like a ghost. Well, whatever those would sound like. How could he know? At any rate, the scream had come from down the hall from one of the rooms and he found his feet taking him there. Maybe some girl had gotten the same idea and fell down some stairs, or hurt herself.
Dutchy ran to the girl laying on the rug on the floor of a girl's room, kneeling beside her and gently placing his hands on her shoulders thinking she was either hurt or knocked out. But there were no stairs for her to have fallen down from... Maybe she saw a ghost. His nose felt itchy from all the dust he'd kicked up running.
"Hey, are you all right?"

Queenie looked up slowly. Her sea green eyes red and her lips were dry. She looked up to the face of a boy. No older than she. And if he was it was not by much. He looked upon her with a concerned look. Her eyes had to adjust to the light in the room. Marha suddenly panicked. ''Who...(cough) are you?'' She inqired with a low and raspy voice. It was thick and oddly sensual. A thick curl of black mahogany hair fell into her eye.

"Dutchy," He answered with a sigh of relief and let go of her shoulders. He stayed near her though, still concerned, "I just... Well, I was passin' the house and I heard you scream. I thought you'd gotten yourself hurt or something..."
Dutchy fought back a sneeze and rubbed at his nose instead. "You're not hurt, are you, miss?"

''No...Im not hurt. How did you get in here Dutchy?'' Marha looked up into his face. His glasses were sliding down his nose and his hair was slightly falling out of place. "At least I dont think I am..."

"Through the door," Dutchy smirked, hoping to ease the tension. He stood slowly and held out his ink stained hands to help her up. "I don't think either of us should be in here..."

''No(hiccup)oo...) ''She moaned. ''I have to find the box. Its got my things in it. I hid it in here, about 6 years ago. I promised Matt I would send it to him.'' Marha had to get it to him. It held Her mothers veil, ivory lace with pearls and swarkovski crystals. Marahs older brother Matt, who was currently living on his mining land up in the Klondike area in Alaska. In the recent letter that she had received, he had mentioned wanting to propose to a very nice widow that he had been courting for the last two years. He had requested that i come back to this house and find the veil that he had saved me from burning. A veil, for his new wife to be.

Marha sat up straiter and sighed. ''I'm sorry Dutchy. I apologize for being so emotional. I don't want to frighten you or scare you away. Its just that... I have too many memories of this house. And they frighten me... they haunt me for my part." Oh, God. She thought. Hes probably confused out of his mind. he doesn't know who I am. At least not exactly. " I thought I told the sheriff to lock the door. But it seems that he didn't since things are missing..." Marha waved her hand to above the mantle where there was an outline of where a picture used to hang. " God, I'm sorry..." She sighed again. She stood up suddenly, and stumbled on the train of her skirt. stupid fancy dress. " I thank you for your concern. But I need to grab my box and leave." Marha walked over to her armoire and started pulled out a set of keys tucked into her bodice by a necklace chain. She unlocked the door and ruffled through the top shelf and found what she was looking for. She gently slid out a silver box. marha held it under her arm while she walked back over to the boy who was still sitting on the floor. Marahs peripheral vision caught her mourning ring glittering on her finger. Suddenly she was embarrassed. She wished tat she had looked better. Her black gown was faded. her gloves had holes in them. And her stockings had runs in them. God I look shabby she thought.

((He stood before and offered to help her up! Really, girl, I only wrote the four lines! Lol. Also, Don't post twice, just modify it! That's considered spamming; posting more than necessary.))
Dutchy stood there, watching her, a bit wide eyed. Poor girl. She lived here? And with her brother so very far away, how could he do that to her? If Dutchy had any clue where his family was he'd never leave them. Alaska was... gosh, a lifetime away! You had to cross a whole other country to get there!
"Gee, I..." He trailed off as she had finished her speech, her rambling really, and stood in the light. The ring on her finger, the gloves... She had been rather privileged once. Very, judging by the house, the state it was in now it was hard to tell. But Dutchy had a good imagination.
"I'm sorry, Marha," He spoke quietly. He remembered reading the story about the Darling family dying. But not too much of it. It was just another story then. He couldn't even remember if it sold well or not. Had he even shouted the story? He suddenly felt very guilty.
The girl looked rather tired to him and, he wasn't sure, but she might have been crying earlier. "Here, I'll carry the box for you," Dutchy offered, holding his hands out for it, "If you want me too," he added. Why should she trust him with it? He wouldn't take off with it, not in a million years would he even think to do so, but maybe he was just another delinquent newsie to her. That's what most people thought of them.

(Oops... Sorry. I guess I didn't reread too carefully. And about the two posts thing. I'm new at this But thank you for telling me. I wont do it again.) She took a deep breath then turned around. Smoothing her skirt out. "Thank you." Marha gave him a bright smile. It may have not been her best but she was trying to show him her gratitude for sticking around and not running of. The only kind of contact she had with other people where through her letters to her grandparents in England, her cousin in India, Matt in Alaska, and Joe in...god knows where, being in the Navy and all. "Shure" She said cheerfully, handing Dutchy the silver box. There was some sort of relief as it left her hands. "Thank you so much for being so kind to me."

((Dont mention it! )) Dutchy took the box, holding it very carefully. It was a bit heavy for a box of that size, which probably meant the box itself was heavier than what it carried. It appeared so anyhow. He smiled, maybe shyly, maybe embarrassed, and shrugged, "Ain't nothin', really. Besides... it looks like you could use a friend right now."

Marha closed her eyes. Her chest rose as she took in a long breathe. She opened her eyes to see dutchy. She had just met him but yet he was so kind to her. "Im glad I met you Dutchy."

Dutchy smiled, even blushed a little, "Thanks, Marha. Same here." He looked around, "C'mon, let's get out of here... We can go to the post office and send this to your brother. They'll pack it up there."

--New Day (tis for Specs)-- Alanna brushed her hand threw her hair as she made her way down the sidewalk. She'd found the girls lodging house in the Bronx without any trouble after getting some guidence and now she was selling papers? She looked down at the newspaper and frowned for a moment before she took a deep breath and let out a shout. "President presents new bill!" or was it something else, honestly the headline sounded really... well it didn't sound very exciting at all. Her eyes slipped down to the paper again and she sighed. People were giving her odd looks and she felt subconscious, hiding her paper behind her back and smiling at them as her mother had taught her on the streets of Charlotte. Never let them see you sweat, because a lady doesn't. Never let them know you're scared. But who was this they that mama was always talking about, that was something else to think about too and she frowned as she thought. That was an odd thing to think about, who was they...
