With some effort, Specs had done the math in his head. With the change he'd cheated people out of the past couple of days, he had just enough to pay for tonight's lodging house rent, the dinner, and even some kind of lunch at Tibby's. It was a beautiful thing, because today, Specs really didn't feel like selling.
Speaking of beautiful things...
Specs was making his way over to Tibby's when he saw a blonde newsie that was absolutely something else. She had to be new meat on these streets--she looked like she just had a bath an hour ago, never mind this morning. She looked like the sweetest thing he'd ever seen, and selling papers? Unsuccessfully, might he add? It was like the gods were saying, "And an angel shall come unto Specs, and he shalt successfully get some..." Specs did a quick check to make sure he didn't have dirt on his face or something in his teeth, and made his way over to the girl.
"Need some help there, angel?" he asked with his most disarming smile. He pulled a penny from his pocket (wouldn't be able to get much at Tibby's now but this girl looked like she would be worth it) and took her free hand, pressing the penny into her palm. "Call me assuming, darling, but you look like you're a little new to this..."

Angel? Alanna blushed and looked at the boy as he pressed a penny into her hand. Oh thank the stars! She could eat! Her stomach was growling something fierce at the moment and she hadn't been sure when she would eat.
The boy was charming, a lot like some of the southern boys she knew at home but a bit rough around the edges like her brothers. Her mama would laugh and say they were of the devils kind. But she wasn't really sure what that meant really until her brother Benji had told her that it meant they were handsome. Or remarked about it on some scale, he had glasses even. Her head tilted at him and when he said that she was new she just nodded a lot, causing her blond curls to bounce.
"I'm afraid so... I'm making a poor show of it aren't I.." and she had proper grammar! Even more so her accent was that of the southern hills and streets of the Carolinas. There wasn't much dirt on her face and she smelled like flowers still, she had her toiletries with her and made a habit of keeping up her hygiene. Who knew what would happen next.
