A few cupboards and a sink, the small kitchen can get a bit crowded!

It was here that Joanna was making dinner for the girls, the soup got thinner and thinner. Since some of them had to bring siblings now and again. She sighed and added more water, shouting for someone-- ANYONE to bring her the potatoes. She'd never had children of her own but she felt like a mother here now. The girls that needed a place to stay-- she was more than willing to give them this.

Hurrying in Z dropped her bag on a chair near the door and quickly grabbed the potatoes that were in the sink already scrubbed in peeled. skillfully cutting them into bite size chunks she brought them over to pot. "Are these what you needed." Z asked and smiled politely.

Joanna beamed at the girl and nodded, "Toss them in, darling, quick now. Sorry I'm afraid it's only potato soup tonight for you girls. I had to lower rent a little and I can't afford to go to the butcher until next month.." She her smiled and nodded towards the basket on the table. "But I did get some sweet rolls for you all to have after supper tonight.."
She was mothering-- again.

Z grinned warmly at the woman by the stove. "No worries marm, i already ate. So you can save my share for someone who really needs it. Really I'm just here to sleep not to eat. I have that quite covered." Z rubbed her stomach which wasnt rounded at all but boy could the girl eat. It was a gift, her brothers and her use to have eating contests and quite a few times she'd win. Z just smiles at this memory. She had no bitterness when she remembered her family and because of this it was suffice to say that she was a gentle spirit.
"Marm, if you let me do this i can add quite a bit, make it more filling and quite tasty. Streching the food at home was my job and with 7 children I got quite good at it." Z just smiled charmingly and started rummaging in the cupboards. "In addition it will give you time to finish anything else you must get done before dinner."
"Oh dear me where are my manners. My mother brought me up better than this. I beg your pardon marm. I'm Z." She said shaking her head at herself, curtsied and held out her hand in introduction, after she rose of course.

With a nod Joanna chuckled and waved her hand, taking the girl's hand in hers and giving it a firm shake, "I'm Joanna Bradley, I own the boarding house... and your food is part of room and board, darling... so just have a seat and help me out a bit okay?" She was a generally kid and good soul, it was part of Joanna's makeup.

(Sorry is it okay if I join this post? Really bored. Came up with that idea. Hope you don't mind.
Bear was walking down the streets in Bronx just selling his papes and spending the day out of Brooklyn. He had decided to go to Bronx to investigate stuff. He had heard in the papes that there was a fire that they thought a murderer had started. Bear loved that type of stuff and he wanted to see the burned down house himself. Besides if anybody yelled at him for selling in the wrong turf he would just soak them. He was walking past the girls lodging House when a man stopped him and said, "We have a delivery of new pots and pans here for the lodging house. Would you mind bringing it in son?" Bear shrugged and took the box and walked into the lodging House. He heard voices in the kitchen and so he went there standing in the doorway. He cleared his throat.

Z nodded but knew she wouldnt usually be here for dinner and if she was she wouldnt eat much. She just didnt feel right when she honestly didnt need the food and others, especially the newsies with the strike, needed it more. "Of course marm" she said.
The throat clearing drew Z's attention to the door and she hurried over to give the boy a hand with the box. Even though it didnt look like he didnt need it. "Marm were you expecting a delivery." she called over her shoulder. Smiling at the man she said warmly. "I havent a clue where a darn thing goes around here. So i guess im not much help in that aspect. But we could try putting it on the table and go from there." she shrugged, realizing she was probably more hindering than helpful, Z stepped back and let him do what he wanted.
