"wow!" exclaimed Gwennie surprised that the game was that simple "ya mean ya always win a prize no mattah what ya do? dat's so neat!" she enthused, wishing that her brother were still around for her to explain the game to. No matter how many times they had come to steeplechase, they had never been able to figure out what to do when it came to that game. She remembered how they used to spend hours arguing over different possibilities for the game's rules. One time Joseph suggested that it wasn't even a game at all but a playground for the mice that lived all around the city, they had both laughed so hard at that one. As she thought about it more she felt a slight ache grow in her chest and there was an element of sorrow in her smile as she took one of the balls and dropped it into the opening at the top.

Almost immediately Fighter noticed the sad gleam in Gwennie's eye and wished she had more money so she could buy her icecream. She swore that the minute this whole mess with the price hike was sorted out she was going to take her. As Gwennie dropped the ball through the slot, Fight smiled waiting to see what it would land on.

Gwennie watched the ball as it fell through the box and landed on the box with the four written on it. She ran over to look at the prizes with the four on them, there were some small puppy dog stuffed animals, a few dolls and a brightly colored top. For a moment, she gravitated toward the stuffed animals but then she realized how much Joseph would have liked the top and decided that she would get it since he wasn't able to. "I want da top" she said quietly, a sad smile returning to her face as the proprietor of the booth placed it in her hands.

Fighter smiled as Gwennie picked the top, she'd seen one before but she'd never played with one herself. "What's t'at, Gwennie, m'dear? You'll 'ave to show me 'ow it works when we get back to the lodgin' 'ouse." Fighter held her hand out once again and nodded towards the entrance indicating that it was time for them to get back to the lodging house. "You ready?" She wasn't sure if that should be a rhetorical question or not because she used to hate leaving Steeplechase.

Gwennie nodded somewhat dejectedly "I guess" she said, disappointed that they had to leave. She had really enjoyed coming to steeplechase with fighter. It had been the first time that she had come with someone else since Joseph died and she had to admit that it was much more fun than coming alone. She grabbed onto Fighter's hand and followed her sedately out of the park. "Dat was fun" she stated matter of factly, her free arm filled with all of her winnings. "when we get back we could both figure out how ta use da top. I nevah used one befoah eithah I jus' watched. but Joseph loved 'em..." she trailed off , suddenly taking an intent interest in the ground. "Almos' as much as he loved steeplechase."
((sorry It took me so long to respond. I just started school and my schedule is really rigorous this year so I have almost no free time during the week.))

Fighter took Gwennie's hand and smiled when Gwennie gave her the sad look that told Fighter she didn't want to go. Fight knew that feeling all to well, when her uncle used to bring her there she would hate to leave. Downright throw fits when she was young and demand that they stay until close. Fight thanked god Gwennie wasn't like she'd been. "We'll come back, I promise." She smiled at her and patted her shoulder with her free hand.
When Gwennie mentioned playing with the top and someone named Joseph, Fight became more attentive. From the way Gwennie's demeaner changed Fight figured it was part of the past that Gwennie wanted to not deal with. "That sounds great, I'd love to play!"

"Okay" replied Gwennie with a small smile, embracing fighter around the waist an looking up at her, still walking toward the exit as she did so. " cross your heart?" she asked hopefully, drawing her finger over her own chest in the form of a cross.
She smiled broadly as Fighter enthused about her mention of the top. She wasn't sure how they were going to figure out how to work it. I had always amazed her how Joseph had been able to make them spin so fast for so long. But she was looking forward to trying and it made her happy to see that fighter was too. If all else failed, they could just ask one of the boys how to do it, they'd probably know.
