Pete although he lived back in the Bronx came here to get work. It was never too hard to get some odd job loading or unloading boats. Work was becoming easier now that he was starting build up muscles but it still exhausted him.
He pulled a rag that he used as a handkerchief from his back pocket to wipe the sweat from his brow as he nearly walked right past Ada who was fast asleep on the dock. He glanced at her and then back to what was in front of him before he realized who was sleeping there. He stopped and looked back at her. Oh shoot was his shadow that long already? He looked down and saw that he was late for meeting her after work. He cursed to himself and knelt down beside her shaking her gently. "Ada... hey Adaline didn't anyone tell you it isn't save to sleep on the docks?" He slept there from time to time but that was different. He wasn't a girl.

She grunted and waved off his hand, so tired-- wait she knew that voice. Oh he was in so much trouble! She groaned as she opened her eyes and grabbed his hand, blinking just a little bit threw the sleep. "You are late again Pete... really late..." She looked exhausted as it was, she wrinkled her nose and looked out over the water-- where was the sun? It was setting soon.

He rolled his eyes. She really should have come to expect him being late. He was almost never early especially when he was working. He gently pulled her to a sitting position trying to wake her up. He should get her home before it actually got dark. He wiped his face with that dirty rag really only smudging dirt on it rather then cleaning it. "You should just start coming late and then I would be on time."

Ada frowned and looked at him with a sleepy scowl, "Then I would be late and we'd both be late and no one would be on time!" It was such a flimsy argument but accounting for how tired she actually was she reached up and brushed the dirt off of his face with her hand. "Your just smudging the dirt..." Sleepy she was more likely to touch him without realizing what she was doing, her palm grazed his cheek as she brushed the dirt off and she yawned.

Pete froze up at her touch. He had never really gotten used to her touching him especially like that. It was much easier to handle when she was slugging him in the arm. "Ah... umm..." It was an argument that held less water then a bucket with a couple of holes in the bottom but it took him a minute to actually think of a counter argument. "Well ah... just tell me an earlier time. Its not like I have a watch to know if I am on time or not." She was a sleep though so it meant nothing at all. "We can catch up as we walk back." He said rubbing his face again with the back of his hand as though to wash away her the lingering feel of her soft touch against his rough stubbed cheek.

She muttered and brushed his cheek again, yawning once more. He was still dirty, she took the handkerchief from her head and rubbed it across his cheek before she started to cough. Augh, she hated that.
Ada had developed a cough after her second year of working at the textile mill, but with her brother gone all the time she had to feed and clothe herself somehow. Her hand dropped from his cheek to hold onto his shoulder before she let out a breath after she was done coughing. It was annoying and she pretended it was nothing.

Pete frowned when she started coughing yet again. He knew that cough and it worried him every time. He had been sick his fair share of times but that cough of hers haunted him. Her brother should be there to take care of her so she didn't have to work... so she didn't have that cough. "Come on... lets get back Ada." He stood up and offered his hand to her. He had already collected his pay for the day so he was free to take her back to the Bronx. He didn't need to work. He was fine with sleeping under the stars as long as it wasn't winter and you would be surprised with what kind of food people threw out but he was saving up. One day Ada wouldn't have to work he promised himself that.

Ada let out a breath and looked up at him, he was getting sky high. So tall she was starting to have to look up at him. She reached out and took his hand, clearing her throat she took another breath before getting to her feet. She refused to let his hand go, hell Pete was always there when she needed him and she was there for him too.
"Wait-- it's almost sundown, I doubt anyone is going to bother us yet--" She actually wasn't sure she had the energy to walk back just yet she had one hell of a coughing fit. "Kind of want to see the sun go down over the Hudson.."

He looked down at her hand still in his. He squeezed it gently and pulled her over to a create for her to sit down on. He meanwhile sat down on the dock and let his legs dangle over the side. He was hitting his growth spurt and had shot up like a bean stalk in this last year but he wasn't going to lie. He liked being a bit taller then Ada now. "Alright we can watch it from here." He said with a sigh and leaned against her create. He was tired as well the break before the long walk back would be good for the both of them. Had she asked though he would have given her a piggy back ride the whole way back to the Bronx. Anything for Ada...

He was taller, she set her hands on his head. They'd grown up a lot over the last few years. Still fighting at times over stupid things but in the end-- it was just the two of them and sadly it was how she liked it. She needed to talk to that girl-- what was her name? Maggie. Right Maggie had a boyfriend and was always raising hell about him-- how did that work?
She could at least tell he didn't have fleas anymore, that was a bonus, the memory made her chuckle, she didn't see anything jumping when her hand ran over his hair so she figured it was a good thing. With a breath she watched the sun go down, "It's really pretty huh? Kind of reminds me of Sicily.."

He still remembered the fights they had had years ago which at the time had seen so important but were now just silly. He glanced up at her when she placed her hands on his head and chuckled smiling. She was his best friend and yet he wanted to be closer to her in a way he didnt fully understand yet but still longed for. He turned his eyes back to the setting sun and watched as it seemed to set fire to the shimmering water for just a moment before it sunk beyond the horizon. "Its beautiful Ada..." He didnt get to see a lot of beautiful things in his life but the sunset was one of them one of the other ones was sitting right next to him.

She nodded and set her chin on his head, she was still a bit tired she'd been working all day herself and then waiting for him. She snorted a little and watched the fire lick across the waves like a wildfire before it was gone, the stars and lights blinking out over the water. "Yeah, it is beautiful, like nothing else. Not much beauty living in the drudges is there?" she looked down at him and grinned a little, Ada had an infectious grin when it hit her.

He glanced up at her again and then back to the water. "I wouldnt say that... you just have to know where to look." He could think of one thing more beautiful then the sunset in the drudges. He would never tell her that but he thought it to himself. It was getting real late but he made no move as if to go. Not yet. He wanted to enjoy the quiet moment with Ada

She snorted a little and set her chin back on his head, her eyes drifting closed only for a moment before she opened them again and looked up at the stars twinkling above them. She didn't want to go home yet, it meant going home alone and he'd go back to his lot and get to sleep out under the stars.
He had a cow every time she wanted to stay with him and enjoy the night air, didn't want to go home so she would enjoy this moment. The way they acted it was no wonder people just assumed they were together. Would that ever happen though? She didn't think he'd want her attached to him forever-- since they were little kids was enough wasn't it?
Not for her though, she sighed again, letting her arms drop down over his shoulders, so her chin was actually resting on his head. Yeah--- she would never admit it.

He should really get her back it was getting late and he was never comfortable with her out late at night but he didnt want to leave. Going back to the Bronx meant saying goodbye and he wasnt sure when they would both be able to meet up again. It got complicated when they were both working. Normally she could just find him in his lot but he had taking to coming to the docks nearly every day now for work.
He knew why other people at the docks or those that happened to see them together said what they said. They were so close and together as often as possible but they werent dating. Ada got so angry when ever anyone mentioned it that he thought for sure that was the last thing she really wanted. And who could blame her he was homeless with nothing to offer. He was working to fix that but at the moment he was nothing special.
