Maggie sighed and listen to his story, running a hand down his arm. "...I bet he didn't...but because of that, its best that you did stay...I'm sure he remembers that last meeting well. Because you just sat and talked without quarrel or strife..." She smiled. "...I'm sorry it saddens you..but the past is past.."

Brigmal nodded, "Yeah, but it sure can hurt sometimes." He shook his head slightly. "I'm ok, though, I just kinda stuck me suddenly when I tried to think about the last time I sat before a fire." He rubbed his hand against her. "It seems to be much more peaceful now; you just keep things happy for me." He smile; it was true, he was much happier around her... but why? he did not know.

Maggie smiled. "It will hurt...nothing can change that..you just have to hope it eases with time." She paused for a moment then kissed his cheek. "Well I'm glad for that. You deserve to be happy Brigmal. " She put her hands in her lap, suddenly realizing she may have crossed the line.

Brigmal looked at her as she talked. She always seemed to know what to say. "Yeah, well... sometimes help to have someone around to make it easier." He said, turning back towards the fire. He suddenly felt her lips on his cheek. He looked back to her, giving a sideways look. "Thank you." A smile crept onto his face, and placed his right hand onto her hands, and with his left arm wrapped around her he brought her closer to him. It was so peaceful, the two of them just sitting in front of the fire. He was starting to wonder what would happen if one of her family came home to this.

Maggie smiled and relaxed againt him, watching the fire with him. This was more than she could have hoped for.
A few minutes later a door could be heard opening, and a woman's voice could be heard. "Maggie? Dad? Anyone home?"
Maggie sat up and squeezed Brigmal's hand, as if to tell him not to worry. "Yes mother..."
Maggie's mother slipped into the room that the two were in, smiling softly. She looked like a older, more worn down version of Maggie--tall, then, and just tired looking. But very kind countenance. "Ahh...I see you met someone..." She didn't seem to be angry or disturbed by what she found. "I'm Maggie's mother, you are?"
She came over, taking off her gloves, offering the boy her hand.

Brigmal almost jumped when he heard the door open. It wasn't more fear but shock; his mind was filled with so many thoughts that the door opening snapped him back into reality a little to fast. Brigmal lifted the arm around Maggie as she sat up, and placed it into his lap. He looked at the woman who entered; He could see the family resemblance. Brigmal stood as she introduced herself. He reached out and shook his hand as she spoke. "I'm Brian." He said, using his real name, as opposed to his nickname.

Maggie sat back smiling watching.
Maggie's mother smiled taking her hand back. "Well I'm glad to meet you, Brian...any boy that Maggie actualy felt comfortable enough to let in the house is all right in my book...do you work in the factory or another line of work?" She was a well natured woman, showing kindness in her demeanour.

Brigmal looked back to Maggie, then to her mother. "I used to work in the factories, but now I'm just a Newsie." He told her, not daring to go into the explination. He held a smile as he spoke, keeping his spirits light; things were going fine, and he felt so welcomed here.

Maggie reached over and squeezed Brigmal's hand as reassurance.
Her mother smiled and nodded. "Both grand ways to work--and both things my daughter has done." She streched and started moving towards one of hte side doors. "I'm going to start dinner...you are free to stay, Brian."
Maggie looked over at him. "Please do..."

Brian smiled at Maggie's mother's hospitality. "Thank you very much." He didn't know when the last time it was that he had a real home made meal. He walked back to Maggie as her mother left, and sat down. "I will." He assured her, putting her hands in his.

Maggie smiled softly. "I like the name Brian...I guess that means I can call you that too, no?" She squeezed his hands. "My mother actually is reallyhard to please, but she is inuative about people--I'm glad she likes you."

Brigmal looked at her, he shrugged and nodded, "Yeah, either work." He thought for a moment, "I kinda abandoned the name when I left home, but it really has no connection there; my parents never called me by my name, they called me anything but Brian." He had liked the name Brian, Brigmal basically being an improvement on the name. "Brian and Brigmal basically mean the same thing anyways; strong, nobel. Except the mal in Brigmal means lightning in old Irish." He said, just kinda random. He sometimes just spoke whatever came to mind.

Maggie smiled. "...I like both, really...the meanings behind the names suit you." She laughed softly. "My full name, Margaret, simply means Pearl. Nothing real special."

Brigmal muffled a cough as she talked, holding his hand close to his mouth. He lowered his hand and smiled, "Well, pearls are very special." He told her, eyes showing discomfort as he rubbed his chest with his hand. It felt a little odd, but he wasn't about to go complaining. He shrugged it off and spoke again, "The name fits you perfectally." He told her, not noticing the small streaks of blood that smeared onto his shirt from the hand that muffled his cough. "You know." He said, trying not to cough again. "I'm not really that hungry." He turned and coughed once more into his hand. He was too distracted by the pain in his chest to notice the drops of blood coming from his mouth to his hand.

Maggie's smile faded as she watched Brigmal cough up blood. She stood up quickly, putting a hand to his forehead. "Fever..." She made him lie down, and grabbed a blanket quickly, covering him with it. She'd seen this before in San Fransisco...there had been a tuberculousis epidemic last year.
"...You aren't going anywhere...stay down."
She went into the kitchen and a few moments later Maggie came out with a glass of water and her mother, who was carrying a towel. Mrs. Gerspachio sat down at the edge of the couch, handing it to him. "...Well, Brian..seems you have caught that pesky Tuberculousis bug that has been wandering about." She smiled, tight-lipped. "...you are going to stay here...you are lucky we have had experience with this." She looked at Maggie, who looked concerned, but was trying to stay strong.
