Salene smirked a bit and touched her new friend's hand. "Don't worry. I was thinking of sneaking into one to get some sleep. And I'll figure something out.." Besides she didn't know how long she was staying but she was sure she'd be coming back.

Phoenix shivered as she walked into the pizza place and lead Lily over to an empty booth. She sat down with a sigh. "So, when'd you'se get inta town?"

Lily smiled and sat next to Phoenix.
"Well, I've bin heah forevah. New Yawk, born 'n bred. It's jist I've only bin doin' odd jobs for a while... shinin' shoes, washin' laundry, whatevah jobs I could get into. I only jist became a newsie... work's steady, you don't got people supervisin' ya, threatenin' to whack ya if ya don't do ya job jist so..." She sighed.
"It's kinda stupid. I shoulda started bein' a newsie a long time ago... it's jist I didn't think I'd be able to do what youse guys do... improve da truth... run like lightnin' when ya get caught... that sorta stuff..."

Phoenix nodded. "So, what make's yah think you got what it takes now? I don't mean to scare yah, but sometimes, bein' a newsie is just as hazardous if yah get caught in a lie. Most o' the time, you'll get sent ta da refuge. An' that's a place nobody wants tah be, lemme tell you."

Lily shuddered. "Yeah. Da refuge... I would NOT wanna get stuck in dere." She smiled over at Phoenix. "I decided I was gonna hafta be brave sometime, and bein' a newsie... it's gives ya freedom... Nobody breathin' down ya neck." She looked around. "So where do dey keep da pies, anyways? I'm stahved!"

Phoenix laughed, waving a waiter over. "Can we'se get a pizza over heah?"
The waiter nodded, walking away. She looked at Lily. "We can go halfsies, yeah?"

Lily nodded and smiled. "Halfsies." She licked her lips in anticipation of the delicious pizza. Then her thoughts turned to a question that she'd be wondering about since she became a newsie.
"I've bin seein' fewah newsies around den usual. Wat's goin' on?"

Lily gasped. "Dat's terrible. I hope everybody gets out of it okay." She turned, watching and waiting for the pizza to arive. She turned back to Phoenix. "I haven't met any uddah newsies yet. Who do ya t'ink I should know about?"

Phoenix drummed her fingers on the table for a moment, thinking. "Well, Dodger's the leader o' da Bronx newsies. I ain't met 'im yet, seein' as he one of the sick ones, but he's someone you need to know. An' stay away from the Delancey trio if you evah go to 'Hattan. They go outta their way to cause trouble for us."
The waiter interrupted her getting any farther by bringing the pizza to the table. Phoenix grinned at Lily and inhaled deeply. "Now, dis- dis is what I call good food."

Lily nodded, remembering the names. "Okay, Dodger... in charge of da Bronx newsies... and don't mess wit' da Delanceys. Got it."
Lily took a long inhale of the pizza smell. "That smells real good." She put a finger on the crust to test the temperature. "Jist right." She pulled out a slice and took a huge bite out of the end. Grinning widely, she chewed and sighed at the great taste.
"It's--" she started to say before she realized that she'd be talking with her mouth full: chewed up pizza is definitely not one of the best sights to see while eating. She swallowed and started again. "It's terrific."

Lily would have chuckled if her mouth hadn't been full of pizza. She settled for a grin until she swallowed, then she laughed a bit. Now she wanted to know more about her friend.
"So what about you? How long've you bin a newsie?"

Phoenix shrugged. "Well, I'se grew up in the orphanage and I didn' start sellin' papes till I was twelve." she shrugged. "Nothing too exciting. What about you?"
