"None taken, though I'm not exactly sure I know what you mean," Daisy replied, shifting her weight from one foot to the other. "I'm Daisy O'Connor. You?"

"The name's Pepper," she said firmly, surprised that Daisy didn't know what city she was dealin' with, "Let's just say Brooklyn ain't known to be the host of the cheeriest group o' people."

"Oh..." Daisy had noticed that but had chosen to ignore it. Her home life was dreary enough without allowing it to spill over into every other facet. "Well maybe you've just met the nicest person in Brooklyn, Pepper."

Fame smirked when she heard the girl talk about the Brooklynites not being terribly friendly. It was the truth, and many Brooklynites actually took pride in that. She nodded and smiled at the girl, "Agreed.... I'se from Queens. Headlines are lousy today aint dey?" she asked, shaking her head at the paper in hand.

Daisy sensed that she was missing some kind of inside track on the imginary lines that were drawn in the city and she was determined to learn more about the place she had been unceremoniously forced to live in. "So do Newsies all know one another, or what?"

Pepper's attention piped up as soon as the other girl spoke, "And what's a Queens newsie doin' sellin' in Brooklyn?" Her voice was firm and her expression serious.
She shook her head, "It ain't the headlines that are the problem. Yous gotta have the right tactic of sellin'." Pepper looked out the corner of her eye to find the same man standing there, looking for the headline she had shouted out no doubt.
Pepper shook her head again, this time in response to Daisy, "That'd be a lot o' newsies."

"She sold one to me," Daisy defended, feeling the tensions rise between the two women, hoping to divert their attention from one another, Daisy continued, "So you have Brooklyn, Queens and I know Manhattan, my sister is a Manhattan newsie. Who else is there?"

"The Bronx, Harlem and Midtown.... well, de last two are more part a Manhattan..." she said, shrugging. "Not directly no how."she added, dropping the fully smoked cigarette and tkaing out a matchstick, sticking the wooden end into her mouth.

"I see," Daisy said, trying to follow everything Fame was telling her. "Well suppose I was trying to locate a certain Newsie, how would I go about doing so?"

"Well, that depends on where he... or she...lived. Do you know where deys live? Like.... around what area?" she asked. "Cause if ya do, den you could go to the lodgin house. Or youse could jest ask around." she said, chewing on the end of the matchstick.

"Mm, not so friendly," Pepper smirked, "Yous gotta sell them what they wanna heah," Pepper added in response to the girl. She took out another cigarette from her pocket, lighting it immediately.
She watched as the man walked past her. She used her free hand to cover her face, "Ya got people like that who trust what ya say and buy what ya sell."

"Well I think it's the Manhattan Lodging House," Daisy began. "I was looking for my sister and there was this guy outside...you know what? It doesn't matter. It's stupid anyway." Daisy revised. She wasn't sure why she was so worried what a young man she had exchanged a few words with thought of her.

"If ya sister's a newsie in Manhattan, then she'll be there at some point or another," Pepper said, taking a puff of her cigarette, "I knows I don't hang out at my lodgin' house all day."

"I found my sister," Daisy explained. "But I might have insulted this guy...like I said, it's stupid." Daisy snapped her mouth shut, reaizing she was rambling about something she wasn't even sure about herself. "So other than hanging around the lodging house and selling your papes...what do you do?"
