Jack spit in his hand and shook hers. "Jack. 'Cowboy' to some around here. I'm the 'Hattan leader." He nodded towards his lodging house. "So...you gonna stay?"

Cap'n smiled a bit, "Thanks." She brushed the string of beads dangling from underneath her cap to the side, hoping things would turn out better here.

[new day]
Daisy eyed the front steps of the building, checking the sign over the door one more time. If everything that her sister had told her in the one letter Hands had sent since disappearing from the childhood Irish home two years ago...then she was here. Daisy had no idea how Hands would react to seeing her, or if she was even staying here. But she had to start somewhere. She'd walked all the way from Brooklyn and she wasn't going to turn around now. Taking a deep breath she started up the steps.

Racetrack shoved the door open, nearling knocking over an unfamiliar girl. "Woah, sorry bout that," he said, then moving to hold the door for her. "You headed in?"

Daisy eyed the young man who had come barreling out the front door and nearly sent her toppling down the steps. "I'm thinking about it." She paused for a moment, considering him again. "Do you live here?"

"Shore do," he said, pulling out a cigarette and letting the door close. Lighting it up he cocked his head slightly. "You lookin' ta sell papes?"

"No!" She replied quickly. "I mean, I already have a job. I work at McGinty's Pub... in Brooklyn?" Daisy explained, looking towards the door and then shrugging to herself slightly, sinking down onto the front steps a few feet away from the young man. "I'm looking for someone."

Slightly annoyed at her reaction to his livelihood, he shrugged. "Yeah, I've hoid of it," he said in reference to the pub. Hearing her last question he took a long drag on his cigarette, raising an eyebrow. "Oh yeah? An' who might that be?"

She could tell by the way he shifted that he'd been annoyed at her response. Lovely. She'd made him mad and hadn't even been trying. Noticing he was still watching her she smiled at him hopefully. "My sister. We called her Hands."

Glancing in the air he thought for a moment, lightly puffing at his cigarette. "Nah, no one 'round heah goes by dat name, you sure you got the right lodgin' house?"

Daisy's face fell. "No...no I'm not sure." She saw him looking at her doubtfully and felt she owed him an explanation. "My sister ran away two years ago...from Ireland. She wrote me she was in New York. I know a lot of runaways end up as selling papes so I thought I would check., I'm just trying to find her. I need to tell her..." Daisy drifted, realizing that she was about to let the stranger in on far too much information. "I need to tell her something."

At that precise moment, Hands exited the lodging house. At the reactions of the girls upstairs, she figured that waiting was the best thing to do at this time.
When she did notice them, she froze.
