"Well," he began, rubbing his hands together as he looked up at the list of horses on the board. "I'm thinkin' numbah one for dis next one, but wit you heah that probably means he'll lose. . . so let me 'ave it Hawky, who's worthy of my bet?"

She grinned, "Bad idea to convince you to bet on the loser?" She paused for a moment, "I'd say seven maybe. And what happened to your little "I'm always lucky" act ya had going there?" she folded her arms and arched an eyebrow, smirking slightly, "Or do you really believe that your luck lies with the ladies?" she bit her lip to keep from laughing.

"Go ahead, make fun," he said, giving her a pouty glare as he fished in his pockets for some coins. Pulling out two quarters he slapped them on the counter, motioning to the bookie for number seven. As he turned back to face her his lips curled into a smirk and he removed his cigar, his dark eyes amused as he blew the smoke slowly from his mouth. "But you're jist jealous."

Hawkeye's jaw dropped for a moment. She narrowed her eyes, "Ya think so?" she changed her tone so it now mocked his, "We'll see who's 'jist jealous' when number three wins." She raised both her eyebrows, giving him one of those Ha-I-am-victorious looks before returning to the wall and leaning on it again, still eying Racetrack.

Shrimp sat a ways off, searching for a few "customers" he could paruse off of. He saw a couple of kids sitting nearby..One who looked like she might own something and another who looked like he knew what he was doing. Carefully, he moved closer..

He put a hand to his heart dramatically. "Ya lied ta me? Ya think numbah threes gonna win?" He snorted, dropping his hurt act and leaned up against the wall next to her. "Too bad numbah threes got a bum leg, saw him yestahday." He smirked triumphantly as he pulled out his gold pocket watch, checking the time till the race.

Hawkeye bit her lip in frustration and muttered a quiet, "Dammit," under her breath. She looked back to the smirking Italian, "Jeeze, Race, whaddaya do, come down here every day?" she blinked a couple of times, then said, "Well, yes, obviously you do--your name's Racetrack. Stupid question." She rolled her eyes, grinning.

He laughed lightly, snapping the watch shut and stuffing it back in his pocket. "No I don't come down heah everyday," he said as if it were obvious, leaning on the rail and staring out at the track. "They don' have races on Sundays," he added, stuffing his cigar back in his mouth.

Shrimp's eyes widened at the pocket watch, teh tempation far too great for a tiny thief like him. He almost gasped aloud at its beauty and size. Nicholas would give him...he didn't even know how much for that pocketwatch and maybe he might actually get off his case too. It was worth the risk..he kept telling himself. It had to be.

Hawkeye rolled her eyes, still grinning, "Smart ass," figuring he'd have some comment to say in response to that she added, "You know you are, I'm just stating a fact."
She glanced over her shoulder, as a group of rowdy drunks began a "rousing" chorus of "High Times, Hard Times." "I take it back, Race," she mused, still watching the men, "You're a complete gentleman." Then she noticed the small boy in the crowd looking their way. She turned back to her friend, "Hey, I think that kid over there's checkin' you out," she smirked, waiting for his response.

Shrimp looked quickly away when he realized the girl had seen him. This wasn't supposed to happen..they were supposed to be distracted by the upcoming race and ignore him. He was tiny, wasn't he?After all, that's why NIck always gave him so many jobs. He went back to pretending he was betting..knowing he had nothing to spare and was only going to watch the action below. (btw love the quotes: wicked and into the woods, right?)

He smirked at her calling him a gentleman then glanced over to see who she was talking about. Seeing the small boy betting and minding his own business he gave Hawkeye a weird look. "Whaddya talkin' about? He's jist bettin'." Grinning then he playfully smacked her hat down over her face. "Ya know Hawk, you oughta come heah more often, if ya beginners luck from da first race doesn't ware off, you might be able ta be as good as me someday," he said cockily, giving her a sideways glance and holding in his smile. This was, of course, his sly way of telling her he enjoyed her company.

Hawkeye's eyes darted between Race and the boy, "Well... he was. I'm not crazy," she paused and rolled her eyes, "You know what I mean."
She pushed her hat back up and grinned, "Thanks, Race." She wasn't one to go off on a sappy tangent, but she did appreciate what he said.
[And yes. Now it's Wicked and Breakfast at Tiffany's.]

He gazed out at the track as she spoke and grinned, though it had nothing to do with the horses. However as the loud bell rang his expression changed to pure excitement as he waved around the ticket in his hand and once again the only sound that could be heard was that of a thousand men screaming and hollering at their chosen horses.

As his face changed expressions, Hawkeye's did too, "Ah jeeze," she suppressed an eye roll as, yet another, stampede of men rushed by to get a closer look at the tracks. She turned to Race (though it was doubtful he was listening... or able to hear her), "See, this would be why I--" she was cut off momentarily as she was shoved to the side, "--wouldn't want to--" another shove, "--come back. Ow." She pushed through the crowd and scooted back to her place at the wall, scowling as she rubbed her shoulder.
