SlingShot looked up at Jack. Oh great, the Manhatten leader. Now she was REALLY in trouble.

He raised his eyebrows expectantly. "Well?"

"I got lost...", she said, trailing off. Even though it was the truth, it sounded unbeleiveable, even to her.

Jack sighed and pulled out a cigarette, lighting the match on the nearby lamp post. "Brooklyn, huh?" he asked her, not looking up from where his eyes had settled on the ground, his hat pulled low over his eyes.

Firecracker bit her lip for two reasons. One was that she was rather nervous of what would happen to her and the Brooklynite. The second was that she had to physically force herself not to throw in a few sarcastic remarks here and there. She might be cocky, proud, and sometimes rather arrogant, but she wasn't dumb. She had never met the Manhattan leader, and had a feeling he knew nothing of her existence in his little band of merry newsies. And she sure as hell didn't want to be mistaken for a Brooklyn native. So, she leaned back against the wall, folded her arms across her chest, pulled her hat down closer to her eyes, and waited. Either for a fight to break out, the Brooklynite sent home peacefully, or the infamous leader to address her. Hopefully, it would be the later two options.

SlingShot hesitated, then nodded. "Yeah, Brooklyn". She shuffled her feet nervously.

Jack admired the girl's honesty. He would have probably done something if she had lied, but as it was, he was tired of this war, and this girl shouldn't be blamed for her leader's mistakes.
He wasn't about to throttle a girl, or scare her to within an inch of her life. That wasn't his style. He was bigger than that.
"Well, what brings you to 'hattan....Is didn't catch your name...?"

SlingShot looked up, shocked. He wasn't going to soak her? Well, at least not yet. She decided that being totally honest would be the way to keep out of too much trouble. " Da names SlingShot. I got lost. I was trying to find the Bronx. I jist don't know much how ta get around heah yet..." She trailed off, trying not to babble. She usually did not fear confrentations like this. But now she was nervous like she had never been before. The only reason she feared the Manhatten leader was because of this war. She didn't know how he would react to having found a Brooklynite on his territory.

Jack smiled slighlty. She was a new girl and was probably scared out of her whits. "Well...I'm glad yous ran into me an' Firecracker, Slingshot...if yous had run into Sneaks or one of our otha newsies...well yous may not have been so lucky."
He spit in his hand and held it out to the girl. "Firecracker can show you to the Bronx...so regardless where you go here in 'hattan...stick with her, okay?"

SlingShot smiled in relief. She spit into her own hand and shook Jack's. " Okay." She started to turn away, then turned back. "Ya know, for all that Spot says, you're not bad. I know you guys used to be friends..." she trailed off. She didn't know exactly what to say or how to get her feelings across.

Jack smiled a bit, sadly. "Thanks...and yeah, we used to be friends..." He didn't add that friends don't usually blame eachother for killing other newsies or starting a war...but he left it at that. "Things change. Hopefully one day they will go back to normal." He shrugged. Things would probably never be the same again. Always a bit damaged.
"Take care of yourself...and bes more careful from now on, eh?" He smirked.

Jack shook his head. "...things are different now. Spot is pretty much on his own. He will have to give in soon.." He sighed. He wished the Brooklyn leader would stop being so stubborn for the sake of his newsies.
