Trouble finding that certain book? Maybe it's in the back shelves...

David Jacobs was seriously questioning why the other newsies thought he was the smartest of them all as he scanned the shelves. This was defiantly not an intelligent idea. He had never suspected books would lead him into trouble, but alas, here he was, in Brooklyn, all because of a book.
Sighing anxiously, he removed his cap, running a hand through his curly brown hair before quickly placing it back on his head, covering his light blue eyes as they scanned the shelves. The Jacobs boy shifted nervously, eyes narrowed as he tried to find the book 'Oliver Twist,' one of his favorite Charles Dickinson books. There were no libraries in Manhattan, Queens, or even the Bronx, and, even with a family, he could not afford to buy anything from a bookstore.
He barely managed to hold back a long stream of swear words as his eyes rested upon the place the book should be, only to find it vacant, the book obviously checked out. Great. Just terrific. Maybe he could get beat up by a Brooklynite next? David glowered at the bookshelf, as if staring at it could make the book appear. Had he seriously come all this way for nothing?

SlingShot wandered in, and the first thing she laid eyes on what the Manhatten newsie. Jack's best friend, no less. She smirked and sauntered up to him, tapping him on the shoulder. "Watcha doin'?", she asked, casually pulling out a cigarrette and lighting it.

David almost jumped three feet in the air at feeling the tap on his shoulder. He quickly whipped around, his reflexes having improved since he had become a newsie. The Manhattan newsboy tried to calm down as he looked over his 'attacker,' having decided that moving so quickly in between bookshelves was defiantly not a good idea.
Oh, the irony of the situation. He just had to wonder whether he could get beat up by a Brooklyn newsie, and one just happened to come along? Alright, so she was a newsgirl, and thus she might not beat him up. Hopefully. While still tense, he relaxed slightly, trying to figure out if he knew her from anywhere.
"Looking for a book." he said honestly, hoping not to get punished for merely trying to find some reading material.

SlingShot's grin became even wider. She had no intention of doing anything to the boy, but also wasn't ready to let him know this yet. She knew that she had no right to go soaking him, because his leader hadn't soaked her when she had been lost in Manhattan. Of course, this one seemed to be here intentionally.
She took a long drag on her cigarette, and looked him up and down.
"Ain't you Jacks second in command?", she finally asked, not yet getting around to the fact that close to no newsies come around looking for something to read.

While still not too comfortable to be around the Brooklynite, David relaxed a little more. Had she wanted to soak him--which, sadly enough, he had a feeling she could--she would've already. Brooklyn newsies usually took action first and asked questions later. He only had to hope she wasn't a different case.
Second in command? He pondered the question. The Jacobs boy had never looked at himself like that. Sure, Jack's best friend, honorary co-leader of the strike, but never Manhattan's second in command. He just...wasn't.
"I'm David Jacobs, if that's what you're wondering." he said simply. Leave the second in command question for pondering on a different day.

SlingShot nodded. "I thought so. And you are trying to tell me that I have found you wandering Brooklyn in search of.... a book. I hate ta tell ya, but dat's not a very likely story for a newsie.", she commented, smirking.

"Correction, you found me wandering around a library in search of book. Now, honestly, if you thought I was trying to spy on Brooklyn that I'd be in a library?" David asked her logically. "I hate to tell you this, but I wouldn't expect a library to be a popular hang-out."

SlingShot's smirk stayed on her face. "Now, who said I was accusin you of spyin? No one. I was just commenting that not many newsies come around in search of books. And, even if you are teling the truth, Spot would not be to happy to know that you are coming to Brooklyn to do so", she replied, taking another drag on her cigarette. Her smirk grew. She had no intention of just letting this boy leave, yet. She pulled out a cigarette and made to hand it to him. "Want one?", she asked, not extrememly friendly, but not totally hostile either.

"Just because it never happened doesn't mean it's not a possibility," David replied calmly, slightly perturbed at the girl's attitude but not showing it. "I only came to Brooklyn because there are no libraries in the other boroughs, and I'm not about to spend my week's profits on a book, no matter how interesting it is."
"No thanks." he said politely, not adding the fact that she shouldn't be smoking in the library. Let her get in trouble for it if she got caught, he wasn't about to correct her.

(( woah! big words! what does perturbed mean? ))
SlingShot cooly put the cigarette back into her pocket. "Ya know, Spot dosn't take kindly to hearin' 'bout Manhattans in his borough.", she said, not commenting on his library rant. She hated books.

((Ha, I never thought I'd be thanking that evil student teacher for giving us a word of the week. Perturbed means annoyed, flustered, you know.))
"I know." David agreed with a shrug, hoping that the girl would remain quiet about the meeting but doubting it. He inwardly winced at the thought of Jack finding out, but remained calm on the outside. Better to face that later rather than getting soaked in the present time.

SlingShot smiled genuinly. "Well, you don't have ta worry about it. I havn't forgotten that Jack let me go when I was in Manhattan. But, for your own sake and for mine, get outta here before another newsie, especially Spot finds ya. Because if you get caught, you will probably get soaked, and I could get in trouble if anyone finds out I let ya go. But, maybe make sure ya let Jack know. I don't wanna be in debt ta him foreva, ya know?", she said, finishing off her cigarette.

"I'll be sure to tell him." David assured gratefully, though he dreaded having to admit he'd been in Brooklyn. It wasn't like him to go into another borough, especially when there was a war going on. He didn't care about finding a book anymore, he just wanted to get out of Brooklyn.
Without another word, he headed towards the doorway, pulling his hat lower over his curly brown hair, hiding his light blue eyes before slipping out of the library and onto the streets of Brooklyn. Though he was relieved to leave the Brooklyn newsgirl's company, he wasn't too fond of leaving the refuge of the library. With a sigh, he headed towards Manhattan, never thinking he would be as happy as he was now to get home.
