Sweets returned to her only selling spot and sighed, adjusting the heavy papers in her arm. She started hawking headlines, but didn't even bother to improve the truth. She just wasn't in the mood. She felt she had been getting worse and worse, eating more papes every day.

((new day))
Skittery slowed his pace once he could smell the mixture of murky salt water, fish, and rotting wood. He loved the harbor despite the fucky smell, something new always happening and not to mention the view. "Almos' dere" he switched his stick into the hand that was linked with Drifter and pulled the scarf from his back pocket. He wiped off his face, the walk had been long thus heating him up.
"I sell 'ere a lot" he explained, "always busy with all da fishin' boats an' barges."

Drifter turned her to get a look at everything as they got closer to the waterfront. She grinned as Skits reached for the scarf again, glad that she was used to the heat of DC in girls clothes, making NY in boys clothes nothing.
"Wes had a lot o' fishin' boats in Boston, it's the biggest thing theah next to the fabric factries. Always wondahd what it'd be like to work on one o' em, you know. Out on the watah all that time, gettin away from everything heah."

"I'd prolly get seasick..." Skittery responded quickly finding something negitive. "I like ta have my feet on da ground. Seems more solid" He had a slight frown but seemed to wipe it off as he brushed a hand across his face."I come 'ere a lot ta get away from every where without gettin' on a boat. Jus' hide out on the docks and avoid people i know. Its nice watchin' everyone else do there business when I ain't got any."
He led her towards the waters edge so they were on the walkway above one of the docks. He unwound his arm from hers and scooped up some pebbles, throwing them one by one into the water below. He looked out over the water with no real expression.
"Brooklyn Bridge ovah dere" He said pointing breifly to the bridge that was still a distance away. "My favorite bridge with all the cables and such. I remembah when it was built, I was a kid but its still impressive." His lip curled into a small sneer, "'Shame it leads ta such a drab place" He found more rivalry with Brooklyn than any other area. "If ya get on top of one of da buildings" He flicked his head towards some of the shipping buildings on the waters edge " ya can see the statue too -Real nice at sunrise if ya willin' to get up early enough ta see it..only done it a couple times myself. I don't like wakin' up as you know..." He gave a crooked smile.

Drifter watched as Skits began tossing rocks in the water. Tired from the walk, she sat down on the walkway and dangled her legs over the edge. She put her case down behind her and watched as the boats came an went. She looked over towards the bridge, and had to agree, it was like no bridge she'd ever seen before with all those cables. It was impressive. What really caught her attention was his mentioning of the statue. She had only heard about it, and from what she heard it was beautiful.
"Can youse show me one day? It doesn't 'ave to be at dawn o' nothin', but Ise would love to see it." She looked up at him with a hopeful look on her face, "It'd really mean a lot to me."

"The Statue?" He looked down at her raising one eyebrow. Everyone always wanted to see the big hunk of metal if they were new to the city. He couldnt say no to her, at least not when he was so relaxed and content and she gave him a face like that. He threw the last couple of pebbles into the bay and dusted his hand off on his brown trousers followed by a readjustment of one of his suspenders. "Common" He etended his hand out to help her up. "Guess I could if it gonna mean somethin' to ya" he tried to sound irritated.

"Guess I could if it gonna mean somethin' to ya"
Drifter smiled at the boy, quite happy that he was going to take her. She grabbed her case with one hand and gave the other to Skittery, letting him pull her up then brushing herself off.
"Thanks. Ise don't think anyone else would take me. 'Sides," she said, fixing his other suspender, "It'll be fun."

He let a small laugh when she repositioned his suspender then put a hand on her shoulder to guide her towards one of the waterfront buildings just up the coastline. "Sure Ace would o' takin' ya soonah or latah.." He said downplaying his role so it didn't seem like a big deal. It was a three story brick building with a large bay door for the frieght to be loaded and unloaded. Skittery looked around to make sure no one was watching them as they turned along the side of the building. He set his stick on the ground behind a crate and pointed to a ladder which was about 6 feet off the ground and led to a fire escape.
"We gotta get up dere which shouldn't be a problem- unless climbin' a ladder is as hard as walkin' in a park for ya"He wouldn't let that episode go until something else equally as embarassing/clumsy happened. He got under the ladder and peered up at it, "I'll give ya a boost" he said looking back at her.

Drifter looked up at the ladder skeptically. She certainly hoped he was going to give her that boost since the ladder was about eight inches above her head. Curious, she stood under the ladder on her tiptoes, reaching her arms up. Yea, she was definitely going to need that boost. She threw the strap of her case over her neck and across her shoulder.
"Hahaha, let's make fun o' the klutzy girl. An' foh yoah infohmation, Ace prolly wuddena taken me. Hedve said he would an' some leadah busines woulda come up, like it did taday when hes was spossed to be takin' me sellin', an' Ise nevah woulda got ta see it," she said, partly annoyed with her friend for blowing her off without giving her much of an reason. She brightened up and added, "But Ise can't be too bittah cuz instead Ise out heah wit you. See, I told you everythin' has a silvah linin'."
She grinned at him before reaching up again, "Now how 'bout that boost Skits?"

He snorted at her optimism. "All dat silvah linin' is jus' a way ta make ya think yer life ain't as bad as it really is..." After a moment he allowed a smile to creep up on his face and replace his mild scowl. "Well Ise glad ya think i'se made outta silvah anyways."
He sized up the situation as he spoke, looking up at the ladder then down at Drifter again. "Jacky's da same way - all da leaders are. Always concerned 'bout somethin' else, a lot of da times themselves - or at least Jack gets dat way." He shrugged, "ya need ta get some reliable friends if ya think Ace'll flake out. Ain't no way to start yer stay in da city." He smile when he was finished - he was glad Ace flaked on her otherwise he'd still be sleeping under the big oak tree.
He laughed at her reaching up into the air for the ladder"ya know ya look ridiculous..."He laughed a bit more and got behind her. After making sure she was ready he grabbed her waist and lifted her up so she could get the first bar. He followed up by moving his hands from her waist to the soles of her shoes and pushing up so she could begin to climb.

Drifter thought about it for a moment, she knew Ace would never ditch her for no reason, but she hadn't really met any other kids in the Bronx that she really got on with and she was a bit scared of Fancy since Fancy thought she was Ace's other girl. One thing was for sure, the girls in the Bronx had mean tempers.
As Skits lifter her she grabbed onto the bottom rung, and was relieved when he gave her another boost after that, making it easier for her climb up a few more rungs and get her fett on the bottom one. Climbing was not Drifter's forte, and she was happy that she remembered to put the strap on her case today, otherwise climbing would have been impossible.
Turning around she fought the impish urge to stick her tounge out at him again.
"It's not nice to make fun o' us lil people, but thanks foh the lift."
She pushed on ahead, stopping after about ten feeet to look down to see Skits not far from behind. She grumbled something about him being a show off before pushing upward once more.

Skittery had been able to grab onto the bottom rung with ease and hoist himself up. He climbed behind Drifter keeping a short distance between them.
He caught bits of her show off comment and scrunched up his face. "Hey! It was a pleasure ta help ya up and I could help ya down jus' as easily!" he yelled up as a good-natured threat.
When they were a few feet from the top a wide mischevious grin over took his face. "Drifter," he called again stopping on the ladder, "too bad ya ain't in a skirt.."he laughed at his crude joke knowing he was safe from her until he got off the ladder. This one comment really proved he was a teenage boy. However he tilted his head back a little too far and his hat slid off his head and tumbled onto the ground below. He let out a curse under his breath watching it fall then looked back up at Drifter.

Dirfter reached the top of the ladder and was about to step onto the roof when she heard her name. Turning around she caught Skit's grin and wondered what was up until she heard, "too bad ya ain't in a skirt..".
Drifter was speechless as she blushed darkly and was about to tell him an exciting place to shove that comment when his hat fell off and dropped to the ground three stories below. She instead started cracking up and gave the boy an easy smirk.
"That's what youse get foh bein a smaht ass."

He furrowed his forehead and let out a sound to make himself sound offended. He looked back at his hat sitting on the pavement and sighed. He hoped no one would take it and continued to climb. He hoisted himself over the ledge onto the roof and took a deep breath as he ran his hand through his endless amount of hair.
“Bettah ta be a smart ass than a dumb ass” He said with a smirk amused by her flush face and walked towards the edge overlooking the water. “That was some silvah for ya” he called back with a chuckle. Kicking some debris away he made a clean seat and repeated the action a little to the left of the first spot. He beckoned her over and took sat down on the latter of the two seats, dangling his feet off the edge. His hand fished into his pocket for a cigarette which he popped into his mouth and he made it bob up and down with his tongue as he awaited a match from Drifter.
