Lucky grabbed the kid as soon as Smalls tossed her up and rolled her own eyes, if Smalls hadn't gotten the kid out she would have. Not really wanting to see if the kid was okay she grabbed both of her shoulders and shook her, "Are you stupid as hell you god damn idiot girl! You don't go anywhere near water when you can't swim!" It wasn't her mothering instincts, no it was Lucky's low tolerance for stupidity. She gave the girl another good shake as she smacked her back to get the water out of her lungs-- she was fine she wasn't down that long.
"Get the hell out of here before I lose my temper!" she was shouting, any kids at that age she knew was at least smart enough not to get themselves to close to water if they could not swim it was just bloody common sense.

Sebastian had not wandered to the waterfront to breathe in the sea air and write fluffy poetry about its calming nature. No, there were no beautiful proses in Sebastian’s blood. Instead, Sebastian had come to Brooklyn because he sometimes liked to see how far from L’apetit he could get before needing to turn back to his hellish place of employment. In this situation, raw determination went a long way for Sebastian.
Unfortunately, Sebastian happened on quite the sorry sight. He had wandered by just in time to see a brute-ish young man push a small child into the ocean… God, there was a lot to love about New York, wasn't there?
Instinctively, Sebastian rushed down to the docks. Though Sebastian had little patience for the idiots of the world, kids had the excuse of not knowing any better. Idiotic adults, on the other hand, did not have his pity.
Nor did young adults who pushed little girls into harbors…
Seeing the girl had been pulled from the water, Sebastian breathed a sigh of relief. It was soon replaced by aggravation as he witnessed another girl yell at the girl... for almost drowning... because an acquaintence of said girl got downright giddy when beating on children... lovely.
“Don’t you know that condoning the throwing of small children into large bodies of water is rather distasteful?” He interjected boredly, crossing his arms across his chest. Sebastian did not know nor care for newsie politics and thus, the woes of Brooklyn mattered little to him.
After the dark haired girl was done shaking the small child, Sebastian placed a protective hand on her shoulder. He wasn’t completely dead inside, after all. Giving the ragtag group the once over, Sebastian cocked a brow—the next generation, destined to run the city of New York… Sebastian was now sure the place was doomed.
“If you’re all finished picking on someone less than half your age, I’ll just be making sure she finds her way home… wouldn’t want another insecure boy proving his masculinity by, oh, I don’t know- pushing her off a dock.” He smiled coldly.
Sebastian did not know the little girl’s story and, frankly, did not care to. That said, she was clearly out of her element and cold though Sebastian was, he figured he could get her near her home and out of the company of this charming crowd. And, once he had completed his good deed of the day, he would feel no guilt in berating every annoying person who wandered into his life.
The joys of misanthropy.

Once she had been pulled out of the water, and someone smacked her back, she started coughing up to water. Everywhere on her was soaking wet, and she was shivering as the girl screamed at her. Connie's eyes were large, and at her last sentence, she ran behind Sebastian, only knowing he was nice because of what he had said. She didn't touch him though, knowing she was wet.
"Can we go now?" There were tears starting to fall down her eyes, and she didn't plan on coming to Brooklyn again anytime soon.

Smalls glanced over at the man as he came over, unable to suppress another sigh. It was obvious she wasn't going to get any rest at this point, which was why she had originally came here alone. She looked him up and down, cocking an indifferent eyebrow.
“Don’t you know that condoning the throwing of small children into large bodies of water is rather distasteful? If you’re all finished picking on someone less than half your age, I’ll just be making sure she finds her way home… wouldn’t want another insecure boy proving his masculinity by, oh, I don’t know- pushing her off a dock."
Smalls nodded, waving her hand carelessly in his direction as she made her way back to her crate and lit her cigarette. No, Smalls didn't think it was a good idea to heave the girl into the harbor, but she was positive the girl was going to have to learn to handle more than that if she was going to wander through Brooklyn. Newsies were just a bunch of dumbass kids, not exactly what made Brooklyn threatening. "Okay, see ya," she dismissed the pair, leaning back against her crate and pulling her hat forward to shield her eyes.

Joe you damn idiot
"She needed a bath" Joe shrugged and took another drag of his cigarette. "I was just obligin her."
Damn it, look what ya made me do. If ya gonna be charged wit murder it's gonna be for killin' a scab, not some dumb ass kid.
"Relax she aint dead." Joe muttered and leaned in to give the kid another solid hit on the shoulders to get her to cough up the rest of the water. Leaning back he watched as Lucky shaked the kid and yelled at her. He had little doubt of who would get that tongue of hers next. So he decided to relax as much as he could before it happened.
Get the hell out of here before I lose my temper
"I'd listen ta her." Joe shrugged again "Its not a pretty sight." and he stubbed out his cigarette and rose as the hoity toity came up to the group.
wouldn’t want another insecure boy proving his masculinity by, oh, I don’t know- pushing her off a dock.
Joe sighed inwardly. "I get my kicks where i can find them. "He said sarcastically and smiled cooly back.
Joe wouldnt have let the kid drown, Smalls and Fight had beat him to the "rescue" but he wasnt an outright killer. Not even if they were asking for it. But he knew in the world they were in now you had to learn and adapt fast, you had to be strong and you had to find a way to survive. He didnt want to see another kid dead on the streets because they couldnt survive them. He did what he did to get them to realize they need to watch themselves, in order to survive. But more importantly he did it to teach them that Innocence and Naivity killed. Stupidity is what got you dead, in this life.
Joe folded his arms over his chest he leaned against the post once again. Poised but relaxed.

"Couldnt decide who was goin ta do it?"
When Joe came up and wordlessly pushed the girl into the water, Decker laughed aloud. It was just funny to see Joe come out of nowhere and shove the girl off the dock. Less amusing, however, was seeing the kid go under. Decker was no sadist, and he glanced over the edge of the dock, his smile fading to a look of indifference. Well, damn. This was going to be a problem. Decker wiped his own wet hair out of his eyes and continued to search for a sign that the girl had surfaced...one way or another...
"Joe you damn idiot." "She needed a bath. I was just obligin her."
Decker chuckled. The girl did need a bath. He glanced around for a moment and picked up the book that the girl had left on the dock. He flipped through it idily before shrugging and stowing it in the inside pocket of his coat. Free kindling. He leaned against the post and tugged at the St. Anthony medal around his neck as he watched Smalls and Lucky fish the girl out of the water. He would have helped, but he wasn't quite up for it. One, he didn't know the girl. Two, she shouldn't have been here in the first place. And three, he wasn't the one who would have taken the heat if she'd drowned.
"Damn it, look what ya made me do. If ya gonna be charged wit murder it's gonna be for killin' a scab, not some dumb ass kid." "Relax she aint dead."
"Don't be complainin', Smalls..." Decker siad, eyeing her wet arm. "I had to take a lot more than that and so did the brat. It'll dry..." He reflexively went to his pocket for a cigarette. "Anybody got a smoke?" he mumbled. He needed one at this point, and he would have to swipe a new book of matches next chance he got, as well. Lucky could go to hell for shoving him in and soaking his matches and cigarettes.
"Get the hell out of here before I lose my temper!" "I'd listen ta her. Its not a pretty sight."
Decker nodded in agreement. "She shoved me off a dock, and she really don't mind me so much." He was almost indicating a warning to the girl. If Lucky had shoved him into the water, imagine what she would do to someone she didn't care for. Decker, like Joe, had seen Lucky when she was angry...and he had to concur, it wasn't pretty.
Decker didn't understand half of what the fellow said, but he pretended he did. "Hey, we ain't pickin' on her. If we'da made fun of her before Joe shoved her in, that'd be pickin' on her..."
"I get my kicks where I can find them." "Okay, see ya."
Decker saluted half-heatedly. He turned away from the snob and the brat, and tried to ignore that anything had happened in the first place. "Anybody spare a jitney?" he said. He was always trying to bum something off someone, whether he had it or not.

*New Day*
Reeves sighed, and a smile crossed his face as he approached the Brooklyn docks. It was steaming hot outside, and after delivering packages all over town in the heat, he was more than ready for an afternoon swim. He looked around a little guardedly as he now stood on the docks. The docks was basically the Brooklyn's turf, and he knew they guarded it pretty carefully. But he didn't feel like walking all the way back across the bridge to the Bronx, to Eastern Beach. He pulled his shirt over his head and set his cap and shirt off to the side hidden by a crate, then with a shout and did a canon ball into the water. Reeves' brother Darry had warned him about Brooklyn, but Reeves scoffed. Darry was too protective for his own good. He was fifteen...and a half! He could take care of himself.

Jade whistled as she walked down the docks, she heard a shout and she saw reeves, she rolled her eyes, she sat down cross legged and watched him swim with a smile on her face. 'If you'se drown,I'se not gonna be da one ta tell your sista." Jade said playfully and put on his hat which fell over her eyes. she smiled and took out a cigarette, her bad habbit. She had told her friend reeves that she would quit, and she would...someday. she looked around cautiously and then back at reeves."What cha up ta reeves?"

'If you'se drown,I'se not gonna be da one ta tell your sista."
Reeves grinned as he saw his good friend from the bronx, sitting crosslegged indian style on the docks above him.
"Yeah? Go head and tell her. She probably will be glad with all the trouble me and Danny cause." He laughed and shook the water out of his hair like a dog, before watching Jade take out a cigarette. He gave her a stern look, his eyebrow raised, but at the innocent look on her face he just sighed and smirked.
"What cha up ta reeves?"
"What's it look like I'm doing? Delivering Hat boxes? I'm swimming!"

Jade smiled at her friend and took a long drag and started coughing."I''se prolly would do it too!" she gave him her most innocent look when his eyes landed on her cigarette, her dark green eyes wide ,jade calls it the puppy dog look. "I'se know yoarh swimmin!but i'se meant like ur day how was it?" she laid down, her head hanging off the edge of the dock, the tips of her dark brown hair getting wet. she reached towards the water and watched as her cigarette sizzled and she set it onto the dock next to her. she watched her best friend swim and a smile grew slowly on her features,he was sort of like a brother,a silly brother. he was her first friend since the inncident,he is the only one who knows why she is a newsie."How your sista anyways, haven't seen 'er in a while." she playfully stuck her tounge out at him as he came up for air.

"I'se know yoarh swimmin!but i'se meant like ur day how was it?"
"Been like garbage the past couple days. Guess what? Ol' Mr. Alexander hired another delivery boy. So now I got a lighter load, a smaller route, and less wages. But I guess that's life, eh?"
"How your sista anyways, haven't seen 'er in a while."
Reeves laughed when she stuck her tongue out at him and sent a splash in her direction.
"Alice? Well, she's bout to tear her hair out at the moment. She misses you a lot, she liked having a girl around. Us boys are driving her crazy. Darry is always stressed with his studying so in a pretty bad mood sometimes. And then Danny tries to lighten up the mood, tossing jokes, which just makes Darry madder. And I just sit there reading the newspaper and eating whatever food she makes us."
Reeves smiled slightly at the thought of his lively, noisy apartment home.

"ya i'se been getting more social, finally."
"Yeah? That's real good Jade. Real good," He said, sincerely glad for her improvement. Jade really was a nice girl and she didn't deserve to be so shut in and hidden. He grinned his lopsided grin before teasing, "Well, don't go making best friend brothers, cuz I already filled that spot."
He watched her actions and saw the picture of Char. Even though Jade may have been happier and making a few more friends, didn't mean she was over Char. Reeves sighed, it was the same way it had been with his parents. He had been so young and happy that when his parents did die, he pretended they hadn't, until he actually realized he would never see them again, They were gone.
"It's so hot outside!"
"Well then jump in! The water's great!" He said cheerfully, flashing a grin again.

"No one can take yoah place as me brother!"
Reeves grinned, happy all over at those words. Sure he had two brothers and a sister, he certainly wasn't alone, but it was nice that he had Jade as a "sister" and she had Reeves.
Reeves laughed as she whooped and joined him. He gave her a hug and then dunked her, before swimming off laughing, typical brother figure.
