Marzena sat slouched in the corner booth, an opened newspaper hiding most of her features. The headline: 'JEWELER VICTIM OF BURGLARS'. Diamonds, jewelry, and $15,000 cash was taken from the safe the burglars had blown open. Marzena let out a low whistle. Fiveteen thousand dollars. Whoever said crime doesn't pay was a sucker.
Reading on, it said even though the store lights were on and the shades were up, the burglars work hadn't even been discovered until the clerk opened up the next morning. Only in New York could two guys rob a lit store and nobody notice. Marzena shook her head.
"Figures."

Jade quickly scanned the restraunt and made her way to an empty booth in the corner.
she sat down and laid her hands on the table, she had not much money but enough for a night in the lodging house,papes for tomorrow and food for today.
sellin was..not great but not good. She got the attention of a waitress and ordered a coffee and coleslaw. she rolled her eyes and brushed her bangs out of her eyes.
her dark green eyes not holding an emotion. Jade felt like something was gonna happen...she had a gut feeling,jade isn't usaully wrong about gut feelings.
what ever it was she didn't have a cigarette to help deal with whatever it is. 'Been here a couple months and no friends.' she thought sourly. that was wrong,she did have a friend and his great family but they haven't been around. Jade got bored of being in Da Bronx so she walked around New York, not the brightest idea,but an idea at that.

Reeves trudged into Tibby's exhausted. It was another one of those crazy hot days. Reeves had learned about all these other planets from Darry, and Reeves scratched his head and mumbled in annoyance, "Thought this was sposed to be Earth, not Mars. What did the sun really bond wit the earth or something?"
He spotted Jade sitting in a booth by herself and a grin spread across his face. He came over and collapsed into the booth. With one look at her, he wondered if she had had a stressful day too. He picked up the menu and his first friendly words were.
"Jade if you light a cigarette in here I'll grind it to smitherines. It's too dang hot already..." You could always tell when Reeves was in a crabby mood, he spoke his mind honestly when he was.

Jades eyes windened at reeves, then a soft smile graced her feautures, something that isn't very common with jade.
"S'ok reeves I'se dont got a cigarette."
she looked around the room,watching all the other newsies talk and laugh.
she didn't know any of them.
"You'se know alot of newsies reeves?"
he was more outgoing ,he has to know more people than i do. she thought and ruffled his hair, wondering if it would get him angry...haha...
she took a deep breath and used her hand to fan herself.
"da sun is just brutal on da woiken 'boys' of new yawk."

"You'se know alot of newsies reeves?"
Reeves thought for a moment and shrugged, "I know some, not a ton. I met a nice girl named Lexi Halliway down at the tracks one day at Sheepshead. I think Danny has a crush on her. And Milo, he's one heck of a kid. I know some of their names and all too, even if I haven't met them myself. But I don't know that many. Why? Still bugged about you thinking you're some kind of outcast or something?" Reeves asked bluntly, with a hint of teasing in his voice, his dark blue eyes dancing as he gave her a smirk.
When she ruffled his hair he gave her a little brotherly glare and poked her hard in the ribs. He hated it when she messed up his hair.

"Ain't that the truth! There's no way I'm getting potatoe soup today..." Reeves grumbled looking over the menu.

jade nodded to his question.
something was up with him..probally the heat but she wasn't sure,not the one to press she shrugged and ignored it.
jade smiled at the waitress when she set down jades food and jade picked up her fork adn took a bite of her coleslaw.
"Whats up wit ya reeves?"
jade didn't really wanna press but his attitude wasn't like him and if it was something else or someone else,she wasn't gonna take no bs, not matter how much of a brother he was to her.

Reeves sighed guiltily, avoiding her gaze, studying the menu, a small frown etched into his face. Finally he spoke up.
"I dunno, I just dunno. Alice always says the heat gets to me...but that's not the only reason. But yet I dunno why I'm so mad lately. I've just been so frustrated the past few days. Things ain't ever going right for me. Darry and Alice are always fighting, and then I get home late and they get mad at me, then I get mad at them because I ain't a little kid and they treat me like one, so then we all start fighting, and Danny leaves cuz he can't stand fighting, and then things are all heavy. I guess I've just kinda been upset...I'm sorry, no reason to bring it out on you, just...just ain't been myself lately. I'm all mixed up, Jade."
Reeves sighed, and gave her an apologetic look, putting his head in his hands.

jades eyes softened and she got up and sat next to him.
"Hey."
she said softly and nudged him."If ya ever want me o go over there and deal with them for ya and get thgem to give ya a break. just tell me cause ill do it!"
she placed her hand on his shoulder.
"Im like a sister to ya, and i would like to help. I know when you live with someone for a a while your bound to get on each others nerves, Its normal."
she sat back and smiled at him,even though he wasn't looking at her.
"Like da heat gets u angry,thunder storms get me out raged you never want to see me angry reeves. But I know how it is,well not with the sibling things. but with anger and not getting along all the time."
she got up and sat across form him and took his hand and gave it a squeeze.
"Im always here for ya reeves."
she said truthfully.

Reeves smiled at her, imagining her coming into his apartment and giving his siblings a good talking to, Jade would to, she'd even give it to Darry! Reeves mused, shaking his head, thinking about how Darry had been slightly hazy lately, which was quite unusual for his stick to his studies self.
"Like da heat gets u angry,thunder storms get me out raged you never want to see me angry reeves. But I know how it is,well not with the sibling things. but with anger and not getting along all the time. Im always here for ya reeves"
Reeves nodded, and a big grin spread across his face, as he tried to swallow back the gratefulness and happiness to have Jade. He reached out for her hand and gave her a hug. "Thanks Jade, you mean a lot to me, and to Darry, heck to all of us. I dunno what I'd do withoutcha. I just wish I could do as much for you as you do for me."

jade blushed at the mention of darry but mentally kicked herself to snap out of it.
jade eye brows raised at his last sentence.
"Reeves,you....you have done more things for me than I could ever do for you.
I dont remember my father much...to tell you the truth, I forgot what he looks like..but you and your wonderful family have shown me that I could trust and care for a group of people again.ya guys mean alot to me.
Danny is like the funniest brother ever..you are a caring brother that taught me soo much.Alice is the big sister that I always wanted and darry..."Jade looked away slightly,hoping that she didn't have a stupid look on her face.
"Darry is darry."
she sat back down and smiled at reeves pushing her coffee towards him."Wanna drink of coffee?Its black cause i like it strong,but you can sweeten it up if ya like it like that."
she looked at the ceiling,"Give your family my regards."
she was listening to a couple of richies while she was selling,and that is how she learned it.

Reeves grinned. "You don't have to sneak into the mouse hole Jade. We all knows you like him, and he likes you too. Everytime we mention you he gets this dopey look on his face, even in the middle of his rithmentic' studies! If you can distract him during that, you must really have him wrapped up in ya."
Reeves laughed, knowing he was probably embarrassing the heck out of poor Jade, but that's what brothers do, and it was the truth anyways. So what if they were in love, it was a good thing. He liked seeing Darry so happy again.
He nodded and took the coffee, grabbing some sugar and dumping some in. He loved lots of sugar in his coffee. Reeves was always calm though, he didn't get hyper off sugar like Danny did.
At the term richies, Reeves' mind switched to Catherine, and he smile in spite of himself. At least that was one good thing happening for him. Things were still uncertain, but one thing was sure. Catherine loved Reeves and he loved her back. He sighed and shook himself out of it, smiling at Jade.

jades eyes went huge at what reeves said and she felt her cheeks turn beet red.
jade knew it was true,i mean they already kissed,jade looked at the coffe with all the sugar in it and rolled her eyes,she knew it,she like darry but she had too drive him away.
she was a newsie,she didn't have a future,she would be lucky if she lived to be twenty five!!!
Darry had a future and jade would be selfish if she held him back.
Its adorable that she distracted him from his studies but it was a bad thing,jade smiled at reeves,hoping that he wasn't being so observant of her inner emotional termoil.
she took a note out with the name 'darry on it,jade had neat handwriting,she silently handed it to reeves,knowing that the moment she was out of sight he would read.It explained how jade couldn't see darry in that sense ever again,why she was doing this,and an apology for leading him on,jade cared about him too much to be with him.
when she would ever go over reeves to see the family she would feel awful to see darry,but at the same time she would love to see him.
it was stupid of her to want to be with people then when they get too close to push them away .
"Im so stupid."
jade said in a whisper .

jade thought for a moment and decided that a note would be stupid,so she took it fromt eh spot the reeves set it on and ripped it.

Reeves looked at the letter slightly confused, and heard Jade whisper she was stupid. He had a feeling he knew what Jade was doing. He sighed, and was about to say something until she ripped it up. He didn't understand why she would even think about Darry not liking her because she was poor or some street girl.
Reeves said, "Jade, I'm sorry about what I said before, about you thinking you're some kind of outsider. It ain't the truth, maybe you feel that way, but you're wrong. There are people who care about you. You're a part of me and Darry, Danny, and Alices' family, and there's probably other people who care about you too, but if you still think not, you gotta hold on. It will happen, you just gotta let it happen. Darry loves you, he told me he did one night. He doesn't care about his collage plans, he says they won't interfere. He says if you can wait for him, he'll do anything for you. He just has to finish collage first."

jade smiled and wished that darry was there.
she looked at reeves and smiled,he really understood her.
she looked down at her hands then reached over and hesitantly took a small sip,then clutched her throat and made a face.ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww
