"Um, heels."
"Oh," Reeves uttered as he gave a pointed look down at her shoes. Then he shook his head and strode back over to her, tsking at her.
"Catherine, you're going to let these tiddy things get in the way?" He bent down and took off her shoes and placed them under the bench. Then he took her hand.
"Ain't you ever walked barefoot on a summer night in the grass?" Reeves asked her gently, though he knew the answer was no.

She looked at him like he'd just asked her why the sky was blue. It was true that she had never walked in the grass barefoot. In truth, she hadn't ever stepped foot outside without something on her feet except when she went to an outdoor pool and even then once she left the pool, her shoes were put back on her feet. To Reeves' question she shrugged, allowing him to take her hand as she stood.

Reeves just sighed slightly, his eyes dimming slightly. He had been trying to brighten the mood, but the events happening right now, he really couldn't cheer things up, as much as he tried.
"You think they'll send you away to that school like that? No matter what?" Reeves asked softly, trying to keep the sadness out of his voice but it was harder than he thought.

"I don't know." Catherine was tired. Not physically tired or even emotionally, but mentally. What was to come of them? Of her? She didn't want to leave her family nor Reeves. Despite everything she still love her father, her mother, and both her brothers. She knew Henry wanted what he thought was best. She felt selfish. Selfish for causing her family much stress and hurt. Selfish for thinking of only her own happiness even if it meant every one else around her was miserable. She felt selfish, but she didn't feel wrong.
Suddenly not as sure as she had been, Catherine looked at Reeves. "So, what happens now?"

"So, what happens now?"
Reeves shrugged, she was asking him? He stared down at the grass and fiddled with the button on his vest until he answered, "Either you go away to that school, and I never see you again. Or you say goodbye to me for good and apologize to your family. Or we keep on trying to hide it and your family shuns you, or I get thrown in jail, lose my job, or killed," He answered hopelessly, running a hand through his hair.

She looked to Reeves, slightly abashed. He spoke as if he didn't care. She shook the thought from her head. She knew he did, but maybe this really was worth more trouble than it was worth. She didn't believe nor did she understand it, but she was young. That's what she kept hearing; that she was too young to appreciate what she was given.
"I move and never see you, say goodbye and never see you, or at worse you are killed and I never see you." She did find that to be rather extreme, him being killed or her. She never thought Henry to be terribly violent. "All three sound awfully marvelous," she uttered blandly.

"I dunno, maybe I'm just crazy Catherine. I didn't mean to say that...I guess I'm just kinda sore. I mean, I oughta be allowed some pride. It's like an invisible law. I can't love the person I wanna love just cuz I'm lower than you. There's just been barriers my whole entire life, and I just never have really understood."

She didn't know what to do. She knew what she wanted to do. She wanted to slap him, grab him and never let go. She wanted him to see what she saw when she looked at him. And for the first time in a very long time she allowed herself to cry and not just a few tears. She fell onto the bench and cried into her coat

Catherine was silent for a moment. Reeves avoided her gaze, sighing and tugging on his gray cap. Then Catherine did something Reeves didn't expect. She sat back down on the bench and cried. Catherine never cried.
Reeves sighed, knowing it was his fault. If he hadn't been so pessimistic. It's just his mind was jumbled and it was late and he was confused and didn't know what to do, and the situation felt impossible to deal with. He had already apologized, he didn't want to be a fool and sit there apologizing.
"Catherine," was all he could say. He sighed and sat next to her, resting his hand on top of hers and stroking her soft curls as she cried. He just didn't know what to say to comfort her, since he couldn't comfort himself, so he hoped his actions would be enough.

Catherine wiped her eyes as her crying calmed and then subsided. She stood, standing straight and her head held high. Only deep within her eyes was there any sign of hurt. The rest of her, however, was completely phlegmatic.
"Well then, I shall do what I must..as will you."

"Well then, I shall do what I must..as will you."
Reeves nodded, knowing that was the only thing they could do...what they must. He knew the hour was almost up and Henry wanted Catherine home. Alice would be worried sick about him, and Darry might come look for him if he wasn't home soon. He sighed, he hated saying goodbye like this, when they could only have some time together, most of it spent worrying and wondering what they were going to do.

Catherine saw Reeves' disappointment as he nodded. "Do you still have the necklace I you?"

"Do you still have the necklace I you?"
He nodded, assuring her gently, pulling it out. "Of course." He fingered its chain and watched the heart dangle in the night air, reflecting a glare from the moonlight and streetlights.

She looked at the necklace then back at Reeves, meeting his eyes with the smallest hint of a smile on her face. "Then you must forever remember what it's for." She sighed. "And if by chance we don't meet again, don't forget me."

"Then you must forever remember what it's for. And if by chance we don't meet again, don't forget me."
If Reeves hated that word. If. He nodded and took Catherine by the hand, pulling her close and placing a gentle but passionate kiss on the lips, not wanting to ever let go of her. But he did and stepped back, fiddling with his hat in his hands, he looked straight into her green sparkling eyes.
"I promise I will. Catherine, you know I would never forget about you, never," He wished he could explain to her how much she meant to him, but somehow he just couldn't, so he tried to explain it to her by looking into her beautiful face, and smiling gently, though a sad smile.
