Catherine was shocked, to say the least. Those words -- and spoken to her by her own flesh. She backed away sitting on the bench as Henry said his goodbye. There were no words for how she was feeling at that moment. She felt lower than dirt.

Reeves sighed, suddenly feeling exhausted. He looked up at the night sky and realized how dark it really was. Alice was going to be worried sick about him, Darry might even come looking for him, but that didn't seem to matter at the moment. The only thing that mattered was that broken beautiful girl sitting behind him on the bench.
He turned to look at her, his expression soft. He didn't know what to do or say to make things better. He was never that great with words. He sighed and sat next to her. He still felt responsible for all this, though Catherine said it wasn't his fault, it partially was. She wouldn't be being treated this way by her family if it wasn't for him.
He stroked one of her curls and his dark blue eyes shone with guilt and love. "I'm sorry Catherine."

"No," she said softly, "I'm sorry. You told...everyone told me, but I didn't want to see it." She sat quietly looking at the lines in her hands. How could she allow things to turn out this way? They were all ready bad, but she feared things would only get worse. What was to happen to her once she got home. Henry seemed real angry with her there was a good chance he would tell her father that she had sneaked out.

"No, I'm sorry. You told...everyone told me, but I didn't want to see it."
He sighed and felt a lump in his throat, he didn't want to tell her but he knew the right thing for her to do was probably go to Conneticut, or either that just apologize to her parents...and say goodbye to Reeves for good. That thought hurt Reeves more than anything could, but it was the right thing.
He didn't see how Catherine was being so strong now, she didn't cry, she didn't get angry. He should have known, she was always gentle through any situation. All he wanted to do was hold her hand, but in the moment, as he stared at her, he didn't feel worthy to do so. He looked down at his own dirt stained hands, and his worn faded trousers, and the truth hit him. He felt a small tear roll down his cheek.

Catherine stared ahead with the loudest silence surrounding her. She was sad, she was upset, but she wasn't angry. Maybe it was just her nature or her upbringing that taught her to remain stoic in such situation There was a feeling inside her she had never felt before. It hurt. It was a pain so deep that she almost felt she was going to fall over, but in truth her heart was broken in two. They had tried to make it work and even now through all that happened she still believe that it could, but that was her own naivete.

Reeves sighed and looked over at her, shivering slightly in the sudden cold night air. He was glad Catherine had her fur coat. He sighed and pounded his fist on the bench softly, thinking he couldn't even give a girl his jacket to stay warm because she already had a better coat.
He didn't want Catherine to go to Conneticut. He didn't know what he'd do if she stayed either. He felt miserable. He felt like Catherine was giving up on him.
"I guess the music box has stopped playing, huh?" He asked softly, his face downcast.

To her surprise Catherine actually smiled at the comment. She didn't know why. She wasn't even willing, but a smile crept across her face irregardless. "No, perhaps it's just broken."

"No, perhaps it's just broken."
What she said made him smile as well. He reached out for her hand and took it in his. It was interesting, her white ivory hands entwined with his sun tanned cut up, dirt stained hands.
"I wonder what your brother meant by what he said...I didn't mean to make him so angry, he just made me angry...I couldn't help it. I know he cares bout' ya, but he has some funny ways of showing it. I don't think controlling someone as if they were some show spectacle at the zoo is very loving..." Reeves sighed and leaned his head back, looking up at the few stars you could see over the dingy city foggy night air.

Catherine smiled sadly. "He means well. He's just a product of his environment, I suppose." She shrugged. "I fear he has it out for you, though."

"Yeah, well, I'll cross that bridge when I come to it..." Reeves drawled sleepily shutting his eyes. He smiled and then opened them, peering at Catherine through one eye.
"So you briefly met my family tonight? What'd ya think?" He smirked remembering Danny's gleeful joshing.

She smiled remembering the boy that opened the door. "Very...wild to say the least." She liked his family. They played and had fun together. Real fun. Not the chess or tennis games she would play with her family that seemed more forced than fun.

"Very...wild to say the least."
Reeves grinned and laughed softly. Wild. Well that was for sure.
"Yeah, That was my brother Danny at the door. He has this big old grin, that you can't help but grin too. He's seventeen years old, but he's still a kid, and that's how its always gonna be. Alice is fussy, but rightfully so. And Darry is stressed, but tries as hard as he can to be patient...an interesting combination I guess.."
He sighed, guessing Catherine's family didn't do much together voluntarily.

"Yeah, Henry ain't so bad...other than I think he's gonna throw me off the Brooklyn Bridge when he gets the chance..." Reeves smirked. "But I'd say you're the best part of your family. You don't get sucked in by the whole entire "society" thing. You're your own person. You're special. I like that." He flashed a grin and tugged on one of her curls, then kissed her cheek and pushed away from the bench, laughing, daring her with his twinkling mischevious blue eyes to come get him.

Catherine stood from the bench slowly. She smiled and chuckled as she pointed down to her shoes. "Um, heels."
