Spot grinned slightly--well, grinned as much as Spot grinned (which was never much) before seeming to slowly relax more. It was if a spring had finally been unwound around him.
"I am when I'm with you, at least." He shrugged, the grin curling up to his typical smirk. "When its just us and I don't got to deal with any crazy little newsies."

She smirked in return, resisting the urge to kiss him in the middle of the park. "If ya hate newsies so much ya might wanna rethink ya career choice.." She looked back out at the pond with a light sigh, her blissful grin only gradually fading. Her own statement, though made in jest, brought about a familiar uneasiness she seemed to feel more often with each passing year. Just the mention of careers led to thoughts of the future, an overall concept she refused to acknowledge.

*New*
She lay on one of the park benches, legs crossed at the ankle and head propped up on the benches' arm rest, looking up at the sky. The only light came from the end of her burning cigarette, her third fourth one in the last hour. She hadn't smoked in almost two months, but the addiction came back. Though the former four were smoked quickly, she was rather enjoying this one. She savored each puff of smoke and now held it in her mouth enjoying the taste of the tobacco.
A small grin came to Marzena's face as she looked at the night sky. She loved the darkness. So much took place without ever being seen. The night allowed occurrences that the day wouldn't. It was this reason why she rarely ventured out passed dusk these days.

*New Day*
Rex smiled as he and Muse neared the lakeside. The weather couldn't have been nicer, it was just one of those days where you felt good, just because the weather was good. Rex ran ahead and did a summersault, rolling before ending clumsily. He laughed and stood up, waiting for Muse to catch up. He plopped down on the bench and grinned at her.

Laughing she ran after him, almost losing her hat in the process. "WOO!" She yelled in excitement as he did the somersault. Coming up next to him, she took in a breath and smiled at him. "It's nice here today." She commented as she sat down next to him and leaned back a bit relaxing.

"It's nice here today."
"Sure is. What's your favorite season? Winter? Summer? Spring? Fall?" Rex questioned, leaning back as well and putting his arms behind his head, a content grin on his face as he closed his eyes. He peeked an eye open and stole her hat, dropping it on his head and grinning goofily. He was starting to love Muse already, a close friend, somebody he could trust. He gave her her hat back and leaned forward, resting his chin in his palm lazily, staring out at the lake.
He thought about what Muse had told him earlier that day, how her brother left her and all. Rex had never had siblings, but he always wanted a brother or sister. He sighed and asked suddenly, "How we were talking earlier today, you know my little motto, well, its okay to look back sometimes you know. It ain't good to run from your past..."
Rex looked a little guilty. He always felt a little guilty leaving, his parents never beat him or anything, they just didn't give Rex what he wanted most. He sighed and gave her a small smile before continuing. "I feel lonely sometimes, I really do, I'm sure you do too, with your family and all, all gone, but you don't gotta be alone, ya know, I could be a good brother..."

"Sure is. What's your favorite season? Winter? Summer? Spring? Fall?"
"Fall," she said with a laugh as he stole her hat. "That's when the leaves start ta change colors. What about yours?" Fixing her hat she focused her attention on the water as well.
"How we were talking earlier today, you know my little motto, well, its okay to look back sometimes you know. It ain't good to run from your past..."
Nodding she sighed. "I know it is. There are times were I look back and I get so angry that it happened," Leaning forward she continued. "I get angry that my parents are gone, I get angry at Thomas for leaving me at that orphanage alone, that I think if he truly cared he wouldn't have left or at least he would have come back ya know?" She said looking over at him. "But I know that I'll never stop lookin' for Thomas. Even though I think I should."
"I feel lonely sometimes, I really do, I'm sure you do too, with your family and all, all gone, but you don't gotta be alone, ya know, I could be a good brother..."
"Have you ever thought about goin' back home?" Muse asked with a small smile. "You don't have ta be lonely either. I'll be here with you." Her smile grew wider. "You wanna be my brother?"

"Fall, That's when the leaves start ta change colors. What about yours?"
Rex thought a moment, it was a tough decision. "Spring, nice weather, and its a relief from the hibernating all winter."
"I know it is. There are times were I look back and I get so angry that it happened, I get angry that my parents are gone, I get angry at Thomas for leaving me at that orphanage alone, that I think if he truly cared he wouldn't have left or at least he would have come back ya know? But I know that I'll never stop lookin' for Thomas. Even though I think I should."
"You might just see him again...unexpected stuff happens, sometimes in the blink of an eye. And its okay to get angry, heck knows everybody asks the question, "why" at least once in their lives."
"Have you ever thought about goin' back home?"
Rex shook his head, his face truly sad for the first time. "No. I could never go back. It would be worse than living in a city full of strangers. My parents were strangers. They...I just can't, it doesn't matter, I don't matter to them. I'm happy with what I do, it will be better now too, I have a sister to take care of now." Rex gave her a pure grin, putting an arm around her shoulder.
"You don't have ta be lonely either. I'll be here with you. You wanna be my brother?" "
Rex nodded and grinned vigorously. He studied her for a moment before remarking, "we do kinda resemble each other, in a way. You got the same dark hair, dark brown, pretty blue eyes."

"Spring, nice weather, and its a relief from the hibernating all winter."
"Springs nice too." She nodded with a smile.
"You might just see him again...unexpected stuff happens, sometimes in the blink of an eye. And its okay to get angry, heck knows everybody asks the question, "why" at least once in their lives."
Muse nodded slowly in thought. She liked the way he thought, he always seemed to think on the bright side situations. Smiling a little she looked over at him lifting up her hat so it was out of her way.
"No. I could never go back. It would be worse than living in a city full of strangers. My parents were strangers. They...I just can't, it doesn't matter, I don't matter to them. I'm happy with what I do, it will be better now too, I have a sister to take care of now."
She frowned at the sad look on his face and slowly wrapped her arms around him pulling him into a hug. She hugged him tightly. "We're family now. That's all that matters."
"we do kinda resemble each other, in a way. You got the same dark hair, dark brown, pretty blue eyes."
Laughing a little she nodded. "Yeah we kinda do." She said as she messed with his hair.

"We're family now. That's all that matters."
Those words were probably the most wonderful words Rex had heard in his entire life, he smiled down at Muse, he couldn't help but grin like a maniac, trying to stop the tears from welling up in his eyes. Happy tears.
"Yeah we kinda do."
Rex laughed as she roughed up his hair and pulled on her braid, tweaking her nose. He pulled her close again. "That's all that matters...and its all that will ever matter," He repeated her words, a happy smile on his face.

Smiling she looked up at him. She had a family again and she was the happiest she had been in a long time. Sure everyone in Brooklyn was great but they were all just friends. Rex was her brother now and that was what counted most.
Yelping a bit as he pulled her braid she grabbed her hat off her head and twisted her braid under it before firmly putting her hat back on. "HA!" She said to him before he pulled her close again.
"That's all that matters...and its all that will ever matter,"
Smiling she nodded and hugged him tightly. "Since your my brother now, I think you should know, my real names Alice." She said looking up at him.

"Since your my brother now, I think you should know, my real names Alice."
Rex smiled a soft smile, "Alice, that's a pretty name. Perfect! Alice and Alexander, we even both have a names."
He ran a hand through his hair thinking, "So you just tell me if you're having any money problems, I ain't having you starving on the streets, Muse." He said in a perfect older brother protective mode, staring at her with a raised eyebrow.

"Alice, that's a pretty name. Perfect! Alice and Alexander, we even both have a names."
Laughing she nodded, "Yeah we do." Leaning back on the bench she took her hat off and let her braid fall again. Laying her hat next to her on the bench she looked at the water. She loved how the sun reflected off it.
"So you just tell me if you're having any money problems, I ain't having you starving on the streets, Muse."
Laughing again, Muse looked up at Rex. She thought it was great how he got into his new brotherly role so quickly. "Don't worry, I make a good living sellin' papes. And the headlines lately have been pretty good. So hopefully it stays that way. But I promise I'll tell ya if I need help." She said with a smile.

"Yeah we do."
Rex followed her gaze to the water and sighed contently as well.
"Don't worry, I make a good living sellin' papes. And the headlines lately have been pretty good. So hopefully it stays that way. But I promise I'll tell ya if I need help."
"Good. As long as you promise I don't have to be stern with you."
Rex's blue eyes darted from the lake to her, and a slow mischievous grin crept across his features. Before she could react he picked her up and laughed, plunking her in the lake.
He rolled on the grass laughing and then stuttered, "S-Surprise?"

"Good. As long as you promise I don't have to be stern with you."
Laughing she nodded holding up her hands. "Newsies honor."
She screamed and quickly broke the surface of the water with a gasp as she stood up. Pushing the hair out of her face she sip out water before giving him a glare.
"S-Surprise?"
Slowly she trudged out of the lake and towards him as he rolled on the grass. Grabbing her hair she untied the ribbon and squeezed the water out of her hair over him, then shook her hair out almost like an animal with water flying every which way.
